Rosenthal: Cubs in talks with O's over Freel
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9551412/Sources:-Cubs-in-talks-with-O's-over-Freel
The Cubs, seeking more versatility for their bench, are talking to the Orioles about a trade for disgruntled utility man Ryan Freel, according to major-league sources.Freel, 33, plays all three outfield positions, plus second and third base. The revival of Kosuke Fukudome and emergence of Micah Hoffpauir have left the Cubs more in need of an infielder than an outfielder.
If the Cubs acquire Freel, who has approximately $3.3 million remaining in 2009 salary, they likely would part with outfielder Joey Gathright, who has batted only 14 times this season. The Orioles are believed to be talking to other teams as well.
Roch is also saying the Freel is as good as gone.
I don't think any talent will be coming back - if a team is even willing to eat Freel's salary, that's a win for the O's. He was only included in the Ramon trade to take the edge off the salary increase for the Reds.

Uhm, Gathright won't be with the big club, right?
I mean, seriously, if we can just dump his salary I’m fine, but if Gathright actually dons the Os uni and plays so much as an inning for us, I will be sick.

I think you misunderstand
I read that as: If the Cubs trade for Freel, they’ll release Gathright.

SO...
we are now a dumping spot for the cubs junk outfielders GREAT! I didn’t want Pie and now talk is we are getting his twin. Like mentioned above, a salary dump would be totally fine with me too. I wouldn’t mind another team getting into the mix also, either way SO LONG FARNEY!

gathright?
really? is this a track team or a baseball team?

If it happens, this would seem to just be a salary dump. Save the Orioles about $2.25M. I would prefer a 20 year old who is an extreme long shot of ever contributing; but whatever. It’s not like we are giving up a piece of the puzzle here.

if they plow the two and a quarter million into throwing some money at tough-to-sign draft picks on above-market rates I’ll be quite happy, too.

The Cubs
just let Vizcaino(sp?) go to make room for Smardzija despite Vizcaino having not given up a run yet. I guess the Indians claimed him. Point being, they aren’t going to trade a guy that thye just let a guy go so they could get a guy to be the guy behind the guy. Get it?

Ya Know..
Just a thought maybe the O’s should try getting rid of a OF or two to free up this log jam a little. We will have a solid OF with Nicky/Jones/Montanez or Reimold and we have Salazar in AAA and Xavier Avery in Delmarvia package Freel with one of them and maybe we could get a decent not great but decent young arm. I don’t know maybe not

Done deal: Freel for Gathright
http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/baseball/bal-ostrade508,0,687630.story
The Orioles have traded infielder/outfielder Ryan Freel to the Chicago Cubs for speedy outfielder Joey Gathright.
The deal is expected to be announced within the next hour.
Gathright, 28, has already cleared waivers and will be sent to Triple-A Norfolk, where he’ll join the Tides’ outfield. He had three hits in 15 at-bats with the Cubs this year after batting .254 with 21 stolen bases for the Kansas City Royals last year.
If we didn’t send any cash along with Freel, this is a homerun.

They didn't
According to Rosenthal, this is a cash-neutral deal with the Orioles paying the rest of Freel’s salary and the Cubs paying the rest of Gathright’s salary.
The benefit for the O’s is that Gathright is off the 40-man roster, and can be stashed in the minors.

Nice
Gathright clearing waivers moves me from indifferent to mildly pleased.
He’ll probably never contribute much to the ML team, but Freel wasn’t going to either.

Also
it shows MacPhail isn’t afraid to correct a mistake and correct it quickly. It’s one thing to eat Jay Gibbons’s (admittedly larger) salary – he wasn’t Andy’s mistake. But to eat the $3+ M on Freel, that’s a pretty public “My bad” on Andy’s part. Good for him to correct it and move on.

Not at all
Andy never wanted Freel – no one in their right mind would want to pay him $4MM.
He was in the deal because the Reds wanted to dump salary.

OK, there's that, too
but he wasn’t afraid to cut bait. But yes, your premise is correct. A contract had to be eaten to be rid of Hernandez.

with an ISO of .000
I get the feeling that AM owes the Cubs a solid. This is marginally more effective of a deal than just outrighting Freel. We sent $2M to the Reds with Ramon to take on Freel, now we’re paying his $4M salary to play for the Cubs, in exchange for a no power, no OBP 28yo outfielder. We have 2 All Star quality OF, 1 young serviceable OF, 2 hot prospects, and 1 toolsy former prospect turned project. I see no benefit here.
Now it’s down to just Luuke, Monty, Pie, and Reimold for the LF spot. No problem!

O's cleaned house
Ryan didnt have a role and neither does Joey but he can stay in Triple A…
I hate to say it but as much as I like Luis Montanez I want to see what Nolan can do everyday…its time. He has nothing left to prove. Luis, Wiggy, Pie and Luke can platoon and be backups where appropriate.
But lets find out if Nolan is the answer for 2010.

What do we need to know about Freel?
Hey, O’s fans, a Cubs fan here. Other than that he whined about the Os’ cautiousness after his recent injury, what should Cubs fans know about Freel?
Thanks for your thoughts!

we've barely seen him play
I’d ask Reds fans.
That said, it seems like he’s an adequate defender at a bunch of positions who plays hard and will take a walk at the plate.
by pipkin on May 8, 2009 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Gotta ask Cinci
He barely played here, and didn’t play that well when he did. But discounting the salary he seems like he can be a useful piece on a team where he fits — spot starts, pinch-hitting, and pinch running, can play OF and IF except SS. Gets on base decently, little power, some speed — but he didn’t really show any of that in Baltimore.

Thank you both . . .
I realize he had more time in Cincy, but thought the more recent info would be good, too. It sounds like he could be what we hoped to find in Gathright. Maybe the change of scenery will benefit them both!

He was odd-man-out after we signed Wigginton and acquired Pie. Supposedly a good utility man better suited for the NL.

Wait.. WTF???? Freel is in chicago? No wonder Mr Angelos is an Idoit!!!! Just like he gave away Jack Cust to Oakland. Look Ray Lewis wanted to be a Cowboy,, Did Mr Biscotti let him go? NO!!!!! Because Steve Biscotti is NO CLOWN!!! Unlike Peter Angelos is. How in the hell MLB allow Peter Angelos to own the Orioles? Manny Clowns owned the Expos and MLB took over the Expos. I want the IRS to confidsate the Orioles from Mr Angelos.
