Local Knowledge needed for Camden Yards
My son and I will be traveling to Washington and Baltimore in August and would like to take in several baseball games. Can anyone comment on the areas around the grounds and how safe it is at night? Last year we went to Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, Yankee Stadium and also watched the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park . I must say Fenway Park and Wrigley Field were great places with lots of atmosphere and set in "baseball neighborhoods" Lots of things to do in-and-around the ball parks. Yankee Stadium was great to go to but lacked that charm of Chicago and Boston. The Phillies ballpark is a cab ride away and has no bars or restaurants anywhere nearby. It is a destination. Fans go to the game and go home. Can anyone tell me what to expect in Baltimore? Any comments or suggestions on modest accommodation in the area? Or would we be better to stay in another part of town and take public transport. Any other comments would be well regarded. Buflo in Australia

priceline
i use priceline’s name your own price every time I go into Bmore (probably 6 times a year) and you can get 3 to 4 star hotels for 60-70 bucks usually (as long as the o’s arent playing the yanks/red sox, then it might be 80/90). For example, last time I went I got a room in the hyatt in the harbor for $70 (the room usually goes for $230). You can pick the area. I usually pick inner harbor/stadiums, as they are both walking distance to camden.
As far as the area, ive never had an issue. I wouldnt stray too far, but the area around the harbor and camden yards is pretty safe, and after games there are enough people around that you wont have to be worried. There are plenty of bars and restaurants around, but pickles is always fun pre-game. its right across the street from camden yards.

I lived in and around bmore most my life
and around the ballpark is fairly safe, and the inner-harbor. But, if you venture out maybe 4-5 blocks away from the stadium it gets pretty nasty. I remember after we played the Angles last year, I saw 1 shooting, a lot of drug dealing and prostitution within 9 blocks. So always be on guard, they don’t call us Bodymore, Murderland for nothing haha. Also, go to Mathews pizza on Eastern Avenue, defendantly the best food in bmore.

the problem with the violence in b'more
is that it’s a bit random. but if you stick to harbour / fells point / federal hill you will be OK.
Would walking between those areas be adviseable?
I’ll be up there next week (bad timing but it’s for a conference, so w*rk is footing the bill).
I’m in NOLA so I know all about bad neighborhoods. Mine is great but people (including cops) keep getting shot just across the avenue two blocks away from my house.

Honestly, if you aren't a drug dealer, you'll probably be fine most places.
On the other hand, if you’re active in the drugs trade…well, you’re pretty much fucked.

But it's an early retirement

Yes - walk with..
peace of mind. I’ve never had an issue between the stadium and the inner harbour – just a panhandler here and there.
Work use to foot the bill for most of my trips to baltimore as well – enjoy and make sure the AMX is clean so you can really fill up on some good olde Balmer food and drink.

Pratt Street
is relatively safe and connects the ball park and harbor areas.
Look out for Park Heights, real sh*t!!

Went for the first time
last summer and we stayed a few blocks from the stadium. Was just my wife and I and we felt fairly safe. Of course most of our venturing out was during the day. Rode the water taxi to Fell’s Point and walked around the Harbor area.

I second the priceline suggestion.
Of course, if work is footing the bill, I’d go ahead and try the marriott at harbor east.
Harbor east is pretty much a brand new mini-city full of rich people right next to downtown and little Italy. I mean, there’s a whole foods. There’s no crime at whole foods.

I used to
live in harlem park area around W Lafayette ave. Now that is a real area you don’t want to venture into.
