Bulldog
“I go after people, I think I am a bulldog,” Hobgood said. “I’m not really afraid of anybody.”
Can we please please please call this guy Bulldog? It’s a great nickname and we could use a dude with a great nickname. Plus Bulldog Hobgood sounds totally sweet.
Ladies and germs, it is my distinct pleasure to introduce Bulldog Hobgood.
not the hobgoblin?
Or perhaps an homage to the last #5 Oriole first round pick named Matt?

admins: can we get a poll?
DFA: radical. hobgoblin is thoroughly awesome. maybe the only one i would take other than bulldog.
props to daveh873 for recalling hobgoblin

Criminy
Can’t do a poll on a fanshot. How irritating is that?

I hate people thay say "I'm not afraid of anybody"
If you have to point it out, then you probably do harbour some fears.
But I’ll cut him a break cuz he’s 18 and he has a funny name that is perfect for nicknames.

Jesus, O's....
Arrieta, Tillman, Matusz, Hobgood..

I can’t wait ’til you sonsabitches run the East.
How about intrigued?

How about dubious or hesitant?
Lots of prep pitchers were taken in the early picks (5 or so of the first 15). I have to admit I was not very excited to read the initial reactions on various baseball blogs, especially when some of Jordan’s first comments were to fend off questions whether this was a money/signability pick. Oh well.
Go Matt!
Saving their cash for Sano....

I'm hoping so
Sano has looked strong in every video and piece of journalism I’ve read. The real question now is, “Can you tell us your actual age?”
I too know not to get excited about any pitcher on draft day ....
…. let alone a HS pitcher.
I did notice that his mechanics looked pretty clean (not that I’m any sort of expert on the subject). Hobgood looked considerably smoother and more compact than the video I saw last night on Strasberg. Not saying that makes him a better pitcher, but it might mean less risk of breaking down.
hakkaa päälle !
Wow
That made me cry a little. I used to identify with (or be jealous of) the players themselves, but now I’m old enough that I really think about the parents and the family. Look at (I assume) his mom in that video — the pride that she clearly feels at that moment is really moving. But as an outside observer with some perspective it’s also a little sad, because you know the risks and trials that so many kids go through in the minors, and how many never make it, even after success like he’s had so far.
Obviously, as a top-five pick he’ll get paid and a lot of good things will happen, but you never know if this might be the highlight of his baseball career, and how he’ll adjust if it is.

He's a top 5 pick.
Mom can be comforted by the signing bonus. Not to be callous, but her lottery ticket already cashed. Now, I’m sure she hopes wil does wonderful things in MLB, but kind of like Brien Taylor, it’s on them to invest now. The $$$ is there once he signs.

That's totally true
But at the same time, even with the money, would you want to see your kid (any kid) go through what, say Josh Hamilton went through (and with no guarantee of the happy ending)? I mean, obviously it’s better than going through the same thing without the money, but still…
I know you know that emotional stuff like that hits you about a dozen times a day when you’re a parent — maybe I was just at a particularly susceptible moment.

I understand
And yeah, I hope the kid does well. And mom has a right to be proud. I’m probably being too cynical.

I agree and the vid was moving indeed
Since Dad seems to not be around for what ever reason you have to assume Mom was the one driving him to practices, sitting in the stands for all those T-ball, little league and HS games. She paid the price and it all culmunates with knowing he can afford his own car, insurance, house, etc. A great video to show young aspiring ballplayers so they don’t forget about those that sacrifice so much for THEIR dream.
Brandon Snyder, 1B. Remember that name.
Sounds like an excused absence to me....

I like this pick
being as Hobgood is different than any other pitching prospect in our system. Hopefully he can develop his change up over the next few years and get his velocity consistently in the mid 90’s.
I like that we are going to try to keep the wave of young pitchers going and that we are not content with having the next two years make or break us. That would be so Orioles if we would put all of our chips into what we have a fall off the course of long term success.
