I didn't watch tonight's game
And I’ll be out of town this weekend, so I guess I’m on a little break from the O’s.

What a pile
of steaming dog poop that is the Orioles in 2009, man they give a new meaning to the word “Suck!!” I’m so thankful that there’s the Nats cause there is one other team out there thats worse than the O’s, at least for now….. So we’ve lost 8 out of the last 9 and 3 in a row, I wonder how much more of this garbage Andy McFlop & Peter the Goat will take before they pull the plug on old Dave “Trembles” tenor as manager of the Balt. Orioles??? Come on guys it’s time to let this guy go back to the minors… I mean when a player comes up and doesn’t cut the mustard they send him back down, so why not when a manager comes up and doesn’t cut it, send him back to Bowie or Frederick but please not to Aberdeen cause I go there alot to see them play & he’ll ruin them as well.

yeah, but
This is a young team that needs stability. They weren’t expected to win this year. It’s discouraging, yes, but I’m still more optimistic about this team than I have been in a long while. Trembley has over-managed at times, but I don’t feel he’s ruining anyone.

Over managed...over managed
you say, my God my 94 year old grandmom (whose dead by the way) could manage better than this slouch ever could…… I mean over manage, geeeezzzz laaweezee people, what will it take before you understand that this man is not the one for the Orioles future, I promise you this, he will ruin these so called “young guns” we have by doing what you call “Over managing” them, thats a flat out fact jack!!! I know I can come off a little gruff at times, and I promise it’s not at any of you, I’m sick of this crap that they’re putting out on the field, I miss the days of Cal and Eddie and Brother Low, and Roenicke etc….. now we have Mora, Zauhn (sp), Huff n Puff, etc… not alot of confidence from those clowns… Of course I will wait out this so called “Rebuilding” process cause I love my Birds, thankfully I’m also a Dodger fan and at least I have one winning club to root for!

you know what dude?
I can’t stand you. Maybe save your bitching and moaning for the game thread or something because this post is about something good. Or better yet, keep it to yourself because you are a broken fucking record. We all know that Trembley has his troubles, we all know the team isn’t doing well, you don’t need to post the same exact thing in every single post on this entire board. It’s dangerously close to trolling. God knows I didn’t need to see one of your obnoxious comments, let alone two in a row
We are all frustrated, and I understand how you feel. But saying the same thing over and over and over again doesn’t help anybody. We all know your opinion.

we got a post-game thread coming up?
Not a good sign for the team if their bloggers call it a night two nights in a row.
I know that feeling of leaving in the 6th inning? THat’s how this place feels without its post-game thread.

I would have
but I’ve been fighting with Verizon’s crappy DSL modem + wireless router and finally gave up and went to Best Buy to get a new, vastly overpriced one that actually works. And it does. I’ll try and make sure one gets up tonight, since a bunch of the other mods are unavailable.
Then again, I can’t guarantee I’m going to be in town, either, tonight. But I totally have Sunday taken care of. I think.

To the Mods
I think everyone checked out the last few games. This last road trip and the start of this homestand has hurt us all mentally. We are even snipping at each other. In my opinion it is fine for the Mods to take a day or two off just like it is for us to take a few days off. We can refocus and come back strong the next few games. We all know the problem and we all know it will not last all season. We have one of the strongest teams in recent history in Baltimore and the final part will be our young arms coming up and getting some innings, solving 3rd and 1st base for the future and hiring a big league manager with big game, playoff experiance that can match the guy in the opposing dugout. We are not far off. So Mods take some time and bloggers take some time. Bowie, Frederick, and Delmariva will be home next week. Take a day and go watch the future. It will do you some good.

I don't want to get too much into this,
but I think everyone is frustrated with the Orioles right now. However, we must be realistic with this ball club. The fact is that there is hope and there is no reason to give up on the young core of this team. They weren’t supposed to win early in the year and a lot of people projected them to win 60 games. I’d say they’ll win more than that when all is said and done. The young talent on this team and in the system actually rivals the Dodgers in terms of minor league numbers. We play in a division that holds two of the best teams in baseball. We have a right to be frustrated now. Let’s not let it eat at us for 2010, because that’s been the goal all along.
I’m not saying we shouldn’t be frustrated. I’m just saying that we should put it in check.

Hey
I am a life long Pirates fan since 1965 and an O’s fan since 1988. I live in Maryland and the O’s are my official team however I always take a peak at the Buc’s boxscore and their minor league system. (Those Dave Parker/Willie Stargell stove pipe hats are always awsome to see.)
Brandon Snyder, 1B. Remember that name.
Encouraged
Although I had been a lifelong O’s fan, I took a 5 year hike because of the ineptitude of the franchise. I returned to the fold last year after it seemed that AM was making sound moves; not necessarily the best moves, but at least logical moves. Moves unlike signing Sammy Sosa, Albert Belle and all the other washed up old players. Moves unlike wasting high draft picks year after year. Now, I am very encouraged about the future of the team. We may never beat the Yanks and the Red Sox, but we should have a good team by 2010 or 2011. We may have a very good team by 2012 or 13. I gobble up all the news I can get about our young arms in the minors. I am pleasantly surprised that Brandon Snyder, who I had written off early last year, has turned a big corner. So, keep sending the good news from the minors.
Brandon Erbe
Does anyone know how his tired shoulder is progressing?
A mystery to say the least
While signing an autograph Brandon said around 18 May he would be off the DL and throwing some. About two weeks later I mentioned if Erbe was coming back to an official very close to the team and he looked at me like I had stepped on a mine. There is no word and no body is talking. If anyone knows something please tell us.
Brandon Snyder, 1B. Remember that name.
completely unsubstantiated thoughts
If things keep going like they have been I wonder if MacPhail will shake things up before the trade deadline. Scott, Huff, Guts, Koji or maybe Izturis could probably bring some value in trade. With the next wave of young pitchers plus Snyder continuing to break bad on their paltry minor league foes, maybe some moves could be in the offing. If they were even sniffing .500 I could see AM being hesitant to break any momentum by dealing vets, but that doesn’t seem likely to happen. I haven’t seen any rumor of this, just my own Saturday morning Orioles brain meanderings.
I am thrilled with the Jake’s AAA debut, especially the zero walks. I can live with a solo home run to Steve Pearce – a valid AAAA slugger.

with riemold doing well, there’s no reason not to sell scott while his value is so high
It's 4 in the morning. Too much to drink. All the girls look hot. So, the Nationals are Jennifer Lopez to me. —Julian Tavarez
For some reason
I really think the O’s will keep Aubrey Huff unless they are made an offer they can’t refuse. I guess Huff wants to stay because he’s afraid he’ll miss out on the Orioles being good kind of like when he left Tampa Bay and then they went to the World Series. That and I think the Orioles realize he’s the one “club house leader” they have when it’s all said and done (I’m saying I want him as the club house leader – but the situation is what it is.)
As for Scott, McPhail is in a tough spot. I think they like him because he’s streaky and can mash right-handed hitters. Not only that, he’s proving he can hit lefties too – something he’s never really been known to do before. And he’s a fan favorite … I just have a feeling they’ll keep him too.
The guys to trade on this team are Sherrill, Baez and Wigginton. As to what value you can get for each, that’s to be determined. Mora’s got the no-trade clause and a family rooted in Baltimore – forget it. He’s here for the long haul.
One other guy I can see getting traded, unfortunately, is Brad Bergeson. He’s tasted success at the big league level and is in a log jam down the road as far as a starting spot is concerned. I love the kid, but … doesn’t he seem a little Garret Olsen-esque at this point in the season?
I have to disagree on the Olson comp
Olson has good stuff but nibbled and lacked command (he may be better now, it’s tough to tell from his start this week because he was facing, well, us). It seems to me that Bergesen has more poise and command than Olson. The league will catch up with him, but I think he’ll have a home in the back of a rotation for a while. The attrition rate on pitching prospects is such that I think it’s overly optimistic to hope that all of our great young arms will stay healthy and pitch well enough to push Bergs out of the rotation. It’d be good for the team if it happens but I won’t bank on it.
by Dingbat Charlie on Jun 13, 2009 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions
I'll bite
Was curious about your Garrett Olson-esque comment on Bergesen, so I looked up stats for the hell of it.
G. Olson’s 2008 season:
26 games started
6.65 ERA
68 ERA+
Average 5 innings per start
1.73 WHIP
1.3 K/BB
Bergesen thus far in 2009:
10 games started
4.04 ERA
115 ERA+
Average about 6 1/3 innings per start
1.33 WHIP
2.0 K/BB
I’ll grant you that we’ll have to see how Bergesen does for the rest of the season, but Olson never had three back-to-back starts like Bergesen is riding now – which I believe coincides with Kranitz having gotten him to add a breaking ball pitch, as well as being paired with Wieters, who’s familiar with him from the minors. Sure, it’s not going to turn him into Roy Halladay, but at the moment I think he deserves a little more favorable comparison than Olson for us, too.

Well...
part of this is true. Olsen actually doesn’t have the command or poise that Bergeson does.
But Esskay, unfortunately, you are wrong on the Garrett Olsen front. If you look at his game log from 2008, Olsen actually had two quality starts in a row and just missed one the next. In his first four starts as an Oriole:
April 29 – TAM 6.2 IP, 2 ER (won 7-4)
May 5 – @OAK 6.1 IP, 1 ER (lost 1-0)
May 10 – @KAN 5.1 IP, 3 ER (win 6-5)
May 16 – WAS 5.0 IP, 3 ER (win 5-3)
then he starts to teeter…
And after 10 games in 2008, Olsen has a 5-2 record with a 4.80 ERA.
Compare with Bergeson and see what I mean?
I really hope Bergeson stays with it, I truly do, but I just remember being really high on Olsen last year because he was a past second-round pick and then I watched him become a sacrificial lamb. I’m not saying Bergeson will be that guy, but I can’t help but be skeptical. I love Bergeson’s poise, I just worry about a guy who pitches to contact with stuff that is hittable.
I really hope that long term, he’s our Andy Sonnanstine – a fifth starter that will more than likely out-pitch every one else’s fifth starter. Let us put our hope on the shoulders of Tillman, Matusz and Arrieta is what I’m saying.
It's funny, you'd think all the optimism would be gone from me by now
I did go to the game logs before making my comment. As far as saying that Olson never had a stretch like Bergesen’s last three, I stand by that comment – while Olson may have notched quality starts, he didn’t rip off a string of three games in a row that are like Bergesen’s last three (8 IP 2 ER/7 IP 2 ER/8 IP 0 ER). Granted, two of those against Seattle. So we’ll see how he does going forward, but I think (hope) even if the ERA creeps north towards 5.0 that it shouldn’t get much higher than that.

"I don't have a hit-and-run sign, and I believe it's the worst play in baseball." - Earl Weaver
but Olson never had three back-to-back starts like Bergesen is riding now
Olson’s first three starts last year were very good.
Rays, 6.2 IP, 2 ER
A’s, 6.1 IP, 1 ER
Royals, 5.1, 3 ER
He another good 3 game stretch starting on May 26th.
Yanks, 7.0 IP, 0 ER
PHN, 5.0 IP, 2 ER
Min, 6.1 IP, 2 ER
I like Bergeson better than Olson but that isn’t saying much. I wouldn’t be surprsied to see Brad in the BP by July or August. I’m hoping I’m wrong.
"Your wife told you to play in New York.
Well, my wife told me you look like a dork." Boo Teixeira guys.
I have come to like Luke Scott's presense on the team
This guys seems to be the real deal both on the field and off. Scott has not made news in a negative way (Huff’s comments, Roberts steroids, etc) and he seems to be a strong positive role model. Not to mention his power at the plate. With Reimold in left and Snyder possibly the 1st baseman of the future this makes Huff expendable. Izturis should be untouchable and Andino the perfect fill in at SS, 2nd and possibly 2rd. Wigginton is also dispensible. Lets not forget Lou Montanez next season as his bat is potent and defense has improved.
Brandon Snyder, 1B. Remember that name.
what the hell?
Lets not forget Lou Montanez next season as his bat is potent and defense has improved.
Did you think you could just sneak that in there?
Lou Montanez has not shown in any way that he can produce regularly at the ML level. This season alone, he’s barely over the mendoza line, and his OPS is a paltry .620.
LOU CAN’T HIT—DEAL WITH IT.
It's 4 in the morning. Too much to drink. All the girls look hot. So, the Nationals are Jennifer Lopez to me. —Julian Tavarez
Being a former
Montanez supporter, the only thing I can say in Lou’s defense now is that he did not get consistent playing time once he was called up to the bigs this year. It is difficult to establish regular production as a platoon player.
That said, I do fully agree that he is not anything more than a fourth OF. Last year at Bowie he was wonderful and I got to see a few of his performances in person, but it created an illusion in my mind that Lou had more potential than what actually was there. I am not saying that he shouldn’t be given a chance to compete for a spot, I just don’t expect much more than that out of him at this point.
This injury likely took away Lou’s last chance at consistent major league service.

awesome
it’s nice to know we have so many arms in the system and only a small portion of them need to succeed to make this a viable team.
on another note…i’m going to lose a bobblehead to my braves fan friend if the Os don’t take the next two! He and I drove to Atlanta in ‘06 only to see Andruw Jones hit a walk off inches about Newhans glove in LF to win it. I’m still scarred.
Don't let the sunshine fool ya. - Townes Van Zandt
The arms should be coming.
What about the bats? The O’s have been below average team in OPS+ for years (pick a measure, they have not been a good hitting team). I view Jones, Markakis, Wieters as key bats with Reimold and a declining Roberts as important contributors. It’s not clear who else will be around should the O’s turn the corner in two years. The O’s are going to need some more pop to compliment this pitching and compete in the AL East. MacPhail says he can buy bats, if they’ll come to Baltimore. I keep telling myself that as pathetic as the bats have been, this is not the future team. It’s just tough to have confidence they’ll find the replacements.
Problem is, a good chunk of the future IS here
1. Roberts 2B
2. Jones CF
3. Markakis RF
4. TBA 1B/DH
5. Wieters C
6. Reimold LF
7. 1B/DH TBA TBA
8. 3B TBA
9. SS TBA
More than half the future lineup is already here. Now, that’s still 4 sports to fill, but will they be better than what we have in Scott and Huff currently?
"I don't have a hit-and-run sign, and I believe it's the worst play in baseball." - Earl Weaver
I'm all for
an Izturis-esque SS for the future so long as there are capable bats at the other three positions. Not have a real life major league SS will make you appreciate a guy that can field the ball.
Don't let the sunshine fool ya. - Townes Van Zandt
I'd say that the lineup is not a problem.
Right now, the Orioles are getting guys on base. They just can’t cash in with two outs. This trend is likely to stop sometime soon. Our offense is a top-half of the league offense and has been for a few years now.
Roberts, Jones and Markakis is pretty much set it stone. Move Wieters to fourth or fifth a la Longoria.
I’m really not worried about the lineup. I actually worry more about the bullpen than I do the lineup.
That's what I'm sayin man!
totally agree with you. Our lineup WILL click anytime soon. It’s just a matter of time.
