Placket Piping and the Orioles

This is the ninth year that the Orioles haven't had placket piping on their home uniforms. In spirit of not-thinking-about last night, and in anticipation of rain tonight, I thought it would be an alright discussion. Also, there is a Uni-Watch Party in Baltimore tonight, which should be off the hook.

I have to be at work at 7am, so I'll keep it short. If you had the power, would you bring back the Orioles' placket piping? The team basically wore it through the entire 90s, and is almost purely associated with Cal Ripken at this point. I always thought it was weird for the script to be written in black, so I'll have four options on the poll. However, in the infant years of the team, they did wear placket piping with an orange script.

I think everybody has a pretty good idea of the differences we're talking about here, so lets get on with the poll.

I like the unis the way they are now

I like the thicker orange piping on the current pants which I don’t think would look right with the additional piping on the jersey.

Shit, I haven't read UW in a while

Thanks for the heads-up about the party tonight. I would have really kicked myself if Paul Lukas was in the County and I missed out on meeting him. See you there, maybe!

Keep 'em the way they are

The piping worked well with the overall black theme of the unis in the 90s — all black hat, black script. But I like the emphasis on orange now in the script and the bills of the caps; adding piping (in either black or orange) would make the whole thing too busy, I think.

suvey sez...

all we want to change is the winning percentage.

And I’m with daveh873 — everybody I’ve bought a jersey for got traded, so I don’t need any more causes for re-purchase.

I wouldn't add piping to the CURRENT uniform

But I think piping on the 2008 jersey would look pretty sharp. If you added piping to the current jersey you’d have to remove the orange stripes and/or flag patch.

thank you for asking

I was feeling pretty dumb for not knowing. Maybe I’m just too tired, but I didn’t know either.

didn't know either

but then I looked at the Ripken jersey and saw the part with a black line that wasn’t on the other one and said “so THAT’s a placket.” I come to CC to learn fun facts just like that one.

Thanks to the fix for providing this lesson.

Would orange placketing be too much

to go with the current orange letters we have?

I don't think orange placket piping has ever existed in baseball.

MAYBE. but we’d have to see a mock-up.

The jerseys are fine but

get rid of the awful orange bill on the hat. Solid black was more gooder.
