Pitching statistics to date, 2009

Some statistics

Star-divide

It struck me to look into this so I figured I would post what I found. These are the statistics for the current Orioles pitching staff to date in their current roles. The only exception is that I calculated Hendrickson's stats as a reliever only - since he is a reliever now. Obviously, if you think I manipulated the numbers too much you can factor in his total season stats and everythings going to go up a fair amount in the bullpen stats. Either way, the current bullpen pitchers, overall, are having a successful year and the starters are kinda whatever. Here you go:

Rotation: GS W L IP ERA WHIP BAA SO HR ER
Guthrie 14 4 7 79.667 5.42 1.43 0.283 51 16 48
Uehara 11 2 4 60.667 4.30 1.25 0.268 45 6 29
Berken 4 1 3 19.667 7.32 1.78 0.313 8 2 16
Bergensen 11 4 2 71.333 3.79 1.26 0.266 33 9 30
Hill 6 2 1 26.333 5.81 1.63 0.253 23 1 17
TOTAL: 46 13 17 257.667 4.89 160 34 140
Bullpen: GS W L IP ERA WHIP BAA SO HR ER
Sherrill 0 0 1 25.667 2.45 1.17 0.227 23 3 7
Baez 0 4 1 34.333 3.15 1.02 0.179 23 3 12
Johnson 0 3 3 31.333 2.87 1.28 0.248 22 2 10
Hendrickson 0 0 0 15 4.20 too lazy too lazy 10 2 7
Bass 0 4 1 43.667 3.92 1.4 0.273 29 8 19
Castillo 0 0 0 2.333 3.86 2.14 0.3 1 0 1
Albers 0 0 2 24.667 4.01 1.46 0.275 15 1 11
TOTAL: 0 11 8 177 3.40678 123 19 67

...This isn't awful. Honestly, I don't know whats to become of Castillo but if there's 2 better bullpen guys somewhere to plug in instead of them, or you cut Henrickson and put Uehara in the bullpen and bring up Tillman, its not a bad little pitching staff. Obviously, I'm not expecting several of these gentlemen (ahem....Sherrill, Baez) to continue their superb performances, but you have to admit, this is refreshing to look at for the time being. A bullpen that has been awkwardly effective. The starters still need to go deeper in games and Guthrie, well, should probably never pitch in a WBC again. You guys can pick this apart as I'm sure will happen, but I enjoyed considering these stats for a few minutes. Let's hope we can finish the job vs. the Mutts tonight.

I don't get

why everyone is so sure Baez is going to regress

He used to be pretty good, even an all-star just four years ago

I for one think he can keep this up

I concur!

Danny is absolutely lights out! And i am not one to think he is overachieving.

Watching him pitch a year or two ago

ranked in between ‘eating a shit sandwich’ and ‘watching John Parrish pitch’

Also, I agree with you

Matt Wieters broke a bat last night. Nobody knows what happened to the ball.

for the record

not saying either will blow up…current era is really really good tho, just leaving some room for things to inflate a little…3.50era possibly? even that would be great! All in all im kinda expecting the bullpen’s era to go up a little and the starters to come down (assuming guthrie will inch his way back to having acceptible #’s) so maybe it will all even out who knows. But honestly, I dont expect Baez to finish the year with a 3.15, or sherrill with a 2.45.

Sherrill is the Lefty Specialist

Somebody else is the primary closer ; Baez, Ray, Miller
And +Koji -Castillo and Lurch = a pretty good pen

The really surprising number....

is Bergesen is only 8.2 IP behind Guthrie, despite not joining the rotation until late April. Dude’s pitching well, and goin’ deep.

That’s the best time to be here! You should try a little happiness, bro.

its actually not that bad....

i know now that i’ve said that rich hill is gonna pitch 1/3 of an inning and the bullpen will get shelled. however, assuming i didnt jinx anybody, its serviceable. we just need some more innings from the starters to keep the pen fresh. baez pitched well again and albers got a win and dropped his ERA below 4. plus berken was lights out for a while and still finished with a decent game. more starts like that from everybody (excluding bergesen – he can continue doing what hes doing :-] ) and we’ll be in okay shape.

It looks like we have some chips...

to trade. I think Sherrill and Baez might be two nice pieces of trade bait, ’specially with Ray doing so well in AAA and Sarfate on his way back.

I think you let Castillo get more than 7 outs before you judge him. Look at Bass!

Bullpen

They seem to be hiding Hendrickson fairly well in the bullpen. We rarely see him. A good topic to discuss would be what happens when Sarfate comes back. The way things are going, it’s gotta be tough to bump somebody to give him his spot back. I would dislike Trembley for a long time if he were to do that to oh say Brian Bass, who’s pitching well. If Sarfate has options, I say boot him to Norfolk until he gets his act in gear.
