Brandon Snyder promoted to AAA
http://masnsports.com/2009/06/snyder-moving-up.html
I'm hearing strong rumblings that first baseman Brandon Snyder is being promoted from Double-A Bowie to Triple-A Norfolk.
No announcment has been made and nothing is official, but don't be shocked if we receive confirmation tomorrow.
The Orioles are being a LOT more aggressive about their promotions this year. Arrieta, Matusz, and Patton were all promoted this week too.
Last year, the best prospect in baseball was destroying the Carolina League, and he wasn't promoted to AA until the END of June. Reimold didn't get promoted at all last year, even though he was repeating AA. Tillman never got promoted either.
Given how methodical MacPhail has been about promoting prospects, this is a pretty radical departure, and I think it has to mean something.
WIth Snyder, Arrieta, Tillman, Patton, and Hernandez at AAA, are we looking at a veteran fire sale in July and callups galore in August/September in preparation for a run next year? Or am I getting ahead of myself?
UPDATE (zk): This is official per Baysox39 below and Roch. Welcome, Brandon!

I think the primary reason is the thin roster at Norfolk
With Montanez and Turner and Moore injured and Salazar, Reimold, and Wieters in Baltimore, the Tides are hurting for position players. So I guess they figured that if they were going to move him up any way, another week or two couldn’t make that much of a difference. Hope he can keep his momentum going and maybe get the call to Baltimore in 2010!

I disagree, the primary reason is that Snyder is ready to move up a level
Though it was a convenient opportunity, Snyder should be there to stay. When Salazar gets inevitably demoted he will find himself with a new postion as dh in Norfolk.

If Salazar loses his MLB spot....
he’s out of options and we may very well lose him completely.

He's been DFAed by us three times at least
And no one wanted him before. Not sure if his numbers at AAA this year change that.

It is official. Brandon is in Norfolk
Norfolk is getting a model ball player and citizen. I hope to see Brandon in an Orioles uniform in a year or so. This is pushing the Huff situation to the breaking point. I honestly believe Huff is moving to 3rd or being traded to a contender. The Mets are the obvious choice and the hold up could be compensation. Huff is a good fit for this team with Delgado out for a long time. His performance against the Mets did not hurt his chances either.
Brandon Snyder, 1B. Remember that name.

A few O's tidbits from today's Baseball America chat
Ryan (Charlottesville, VA): What’s your take on Brandon Snyder’s promotion to AAA? He’s had a great first half coming off of a solid year at Frederick. Does he fit as a quality ML 1B for the O’s?
J.J. Cooper: I can’t think of many prospects who have done more to help themselves this year than Snyder. Health has always been Snyder’s biggest question, but that hasn’t been an problem this year. He’s definitely the best in-house option for a long-term 1B.
Andrew (Evanston): Take your pick: Tillman, Matusz, and Arrieta or Strasburg, Zimmermann, and Detwiler?
J.J. Cooper: I’ll take the O’s even if Strasburg is clearly the No. 1 prospect of those six. But I’d rather have the O’s depth, and that’s only looking at those three—that’s not counting Patton, Bergesen, Hernandez etc for the O’s.
Shoshana (NC): Xavier Avery doesn’t even crack the team photo of last week’s 2008 hot sheet? Am I missing something? I know he had a lot of strikeouts but he’s really cut down on them lately.
J.J. Cooper: He hasn’t really cut down on them in fact it’s going the other way, he’s struck out in 44 percent of his at-bats over the past week (13 of 29) after striking out in 24 percent of his at-bats this season. If you’re going on production, which is what we were going on for last year’s 2008 draftee Hot Sheet he wasn’t really close. A .279/.329/.376 line doesn’t really make much of an argument, even if you have 17 steals (but also 8 caught). He’s a raw prospect, so it’s hard to expect much more out of him yet, but his potential is more promising than his production right now.

Keith Law had a couple of interesting tidbits on Synder and Bergensen.
Vincent (DC)
Can I get your thoughts on Brandon Snyder? His star has certainly faded a bit, but he’s having a very strong season. Thanks.
Keith Law
Liked his swing a lot in AFL but had two concerns – I don’t see him getting to the ball down without trouble, and I don’t see where he plays other than 1b.
Anthony (MD)
Who are the front runners for AL Rookie of the Year? Brad Bergensen and Nolan Reimold have to be in the op 3 right?
Keith Law
Bergesen would definitely be in my top 3 of players to sell now, fast, before they implode.

More comments from Ben Badler of Baseball America.
Jim (Vero Beach)
In 3 years, which trio would you rather have for your rotation: Masterson, Buchholz and Bowden or Matusz, Tillman and Arrieta?
Ben Badler
Buchholz could be great, but Matusz and Tillman could both be frontline starters. I do not see that from Masterson or Bowden.
Tillman (Dugout)
I’m 21 and have an ERA under 2.50 in Triple-A, and strike out more then a batter/inning. Why am I left out of the discussion or put at the bottom when discussing the best SP prospects in the game (Feliz, Bumgarner, Hanson, Cahill)?
Ben Badler
I dont know anyone who is leaving you out of that discussion.

Tillman should stay in AAA all season
Yes, his numbers are great. Winning record, more stikeouts than innings pitched, he’s big, throws hard and very young…BUT, he has pitched in 12 games & only has 60 innings pitched. For you guys not that good at math, the averages out to just 5 innings per game. Remember how bad our bullpen is when we ask them to pitch the 6th, 7th, 8th, & 9th? Let’s try to stretch him out a little bit. It can only help the guy.
Thoughts?
PLEASE -- JUST PLEASE THROW STRIKES.

damn
law is probs right about bergesen, but i’d hate to see him go. i feel like the “sell fast before an implosion” attitude gets you nowhere because you can apply it to just about every top pitching prospect
by twistedlogic on Jun 19, 2009 5:55 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
A bit hasty?
I can’t imagine Bergeson is going to be this good, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be a serviceable back end of the rotation guy imo. Ideally he’d hold up the #5 spot for years to come instead of guys like Eaton and Trachsel…

yea it is
I think he is suggesting a trade because he likely won’t be front of the rotation stuff. But honestly, the O’s haven’t had any quality pitching the last few years, so who cares if he’s the ace or the 5th guy? Quality pitching is quality pitching. Plus, who would we even get for him? Nobody will trade us a better prospect for him and what veteren guy on the market right now would be worth getting (okay I would probably take Cliff Lee). I’m personally againsty it. We’ve got a little homegrown talent, lets use it. Sure he’s not Cy Young, maybe not even a middle of the rotation guy, but he’s still worth it for the Orioles. Plus look at the “prospects” we’ve had coming up that have NOT looked as good as Bergesen in the past years (Daniel Cabrera, Radhames Liz).

I get the feeling he’s talking about fantasy baseball when he says sell high.
by wscott on Jun 21, 2009 12:22 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Law usually doesn’t make fantasy baseball comments. I think he projects Bergeson as a reliever, hence the trade him now comment.

quite possibly
although i have him on my fantasy team and im not getting rid of him :)

Is Law suggesting
that our boys trade Bergesen because his peak can’t realistically be that high, and we may be able to get some prospects for him? Not arguing for or against, I’m just curious if that is what he meant.
Either way, I love what is being said about our prospects. Keep it up Snyder!(Mostly because I just overpaid for your bowman xfractor rookie auto)

I think so
and I think it doesn’t make much logical sense. Trade a pitching prospect who has been having success in the majors for more prospects? Can’t we at least wait and see if the league finally “catches up with him” ?
Trading Bergesen would just send the wrong message. It could be very slick of MacPhail, but think about the other pitching prospects and Wieters. They’d not be happy.

law
sounded like keith law was giving advice for a fantasy league or something. anyways, Brad Bergensen was projected to be mediocre, and hes been just that for the most partt, which is good. Theres nothing to suggest that he can’t be a solid back end of the rotation stater. Trading him now would be pretty stupid considering that all the other pitchers in the minors are far from sure things. At the very least, hes showing he can pitch in the majors (more than guys like Garret Olson or Liz ever have)
by UMterp08 on Jun 20, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
come on...
a sub 4 ERA and a WHIP below 1.3 are considerably better than mediocre for the most part.

agreed
bergesen was great again tonite. this is why i hate interleague play, especially when the NL team is home. pitchers who never hit or run the bases have to leg out infield hits then come up and pitch. i would venture to say bergesen would have been fine had he not had to hit that inning considering he was only at 70ish pitches. that said, baez totally grooved that pitch to howard.
by twistedlogic on Jun 20, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah
but the chances of Bergensen maintaining those numbers is pretty much zero. Unless he can start striking out more than 4 per 9.
by ItsBenFeldman on Jun 20, 2009 6:18 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I like the K's
as much as the next person. And yes, I would like to see Brad strike out more hitters. But to say that his chances of succeeding without more of them are pretty much zero is slightly harsh. I will take a ground ball on the second pitch of the at bat over a strike out nearly any day.
I think that is part of David Hernandez’ problem. He really tries to throw as hard as possible and record as many strikeouts as possible, which elevates his pitch count and could land him as a career reliever instead of the solid starter he could be.

give me back that filet of fish, give me that fish
if you were Liz getting demoted to AA, you wouldn’t be laughing at all!
How bad does that guy have to pitch before we finally get rid of him?
by twistedlogic on Jun 20, 2009 8:46 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
He will probably be
in the back end of a package deal at some point in time. When you have good stuff, there’s always a pitching coach out there that thinks he can fix you.
