Rotation spots
with Uehara scheduled to (possibly) come back June 10th...which youngster gets bumped from the rotation first, as that happens? Berken? Bergesen? Hernandez? This is assuming Guthrie and Hill are locks...for now.
Any insight, please pass it along asap! THANKS.

My bet is Hernandez
He’s the biggest prospect of the three and they have been patient with prospects so far. So based on track record they will bump him back down and let him work on his control for a bit more.

Yeah I agree there
and if it isnt Hernandez, it would most likely then be Berken. I doubt you’ll Bergesen go back to Norfolk for the time being.
After last night, it's Hernandez

gotta agree...
i mean, it’s hard to say whether or not berken or bergy were able to “turn it on” before their last starts, but the results speak for themselves. while hernandez seems have more upside than either, as it stands today, they seem to be more polished.

anyone think
Koji takes a spot in the pen? He’s a proven relief guy, right? In any event, these problems are waaaaay better then our regular “Waters, Simon, Eaton, Hendrickson” choice problems.

it's possible
I love Koji, but he seems to lose it around the 5th inning. If the young guys are performing Koji would be a great spot starter/long reliever

I touched on this in another thread
but I think Koji needs to start, and one of the young guys should go to the pen. Koji is older and more seasoned, and having him shoulder the load for now will give enough time for one of the young guys to acclimate themselves to the majors.

+1
I think I plus-oned this in that other thread too, but I totally agree… Plus I just plain like Koji.

It makes sense to put Hernandez in the pen
More than likely where he’ll reside in the coming seasons.
I thought Koji was going to the 'pens?'
now he’s starting? I’m confused.

Me too...
I thought we’d already received the backup goaltender we’d gotten in return. Pens ain’t gonna be happy.

We don't work for the Orioles
how would we know?

I also love how this guy needs to know ‘ASAP’. Like he’s basing some pretty big life decisions off the answer to this question. :-P Just kidding….

fantasy baseball perhaps?

Yeah I know, I’m in a fantasy league myself. It was more tounge in cheek….

My guess
The decision probably won’t be made until it absolutely has to. And word of that decision probably won’t be announced until a day or two before a move is actually made.
I would think it’ll be performance based, if everyone in the rotation is pitching well, Koji may go to the pen. If not, whoever is struggling the most will get sent down (other than Guthrie).

So if you want to set up a rotation after Koji gets back...
Guthrie
Uehara
Bergesen
Hill
Berken
Close?
Sounds about right

i agree
Hernandez has to go back to AAA Norfolk. Especially after the bad game he had against Seattle last night. I know one bad start should not automatically send you back to the minors, however, i dont think he is game ready for the majors. He could learn more bieng at Norfolk. I agree with the abouve rotation. Although i would be inclined to put Koji in the bullpen, and fill the open rotation spot with either Tillman or Arrieta. I know it sounds crazy, but thats what i would do.
What if he allows 1 ER in 7 inning while striking out 8 in his next start?
It doesn’t make that much sense to me to make the decision now. Orioles should wait until they have more information next week to make this decision. I’m not saying Hernandez shouldn’t go down, but nobody has to make this decision right now.

Doesn't need to be made until AT LEAST June 9
and maybe the day of June 10.

I still think they move him down
I did before last night’s game and i do now. He has the most upside and there should be a spot for him when he is ready. Also i don think he has proved everything he can in AAA. As for the bullpen, I think he could benefit more by pitching more innings in AAA.

I don't think he pitched that bad.
The first two runs were borderline unearned, as Ichiro’s “hit” could have been a throwing error just as easily. Plus if Baltimore isn’t in the Branyon shift, his single becomes a groundout, maybe a DP.
Then Reinmold misplays Lopez’ flyball. That was an error, even if scorer’s routinely don’t assign it on on such plays.
I think Hernandez was pitching with from behind with no support. With Bedard handcuffing the O’s, Hernandez probably felt he had to be perfect. That sort of pressure tends to work against a pitcher. Overall, I wouldn’t demote him because of this start. In fact I think he showed a lot of why the O’s promoted him in the first place.
