Possible Mets Trade?
Just throwing it out there...now that Beltran is injured, the Mets have 4 starters placed on the DL (Delgado, Reyes, Putz - I know, he's not a starter, but one of their best relievers& Beltran). Think the Mets might have an itchy trigger finger now and might offer the O's a nice little package to get Huffy or Scott? They're only 1.5 games behind the Phillies right now, even though they're decimated by injury - so obviously, they still have a chance to win the NL East. Not sure if they have any corner/middle infielders that may be ready to step in and play late this year/start next year, but I'm really hoping they do offer something enticing to McPhail. I have faith in our new GM, and I know he'll only trade Huffy or Scott if a very good deal comes along.
What are your thoughts on this? If the O's trade Huffy to the Mets, they could platoon Salazar & Wiggy at first, cut Melvin (or let him sit on the bench with huge wads of money coming out of his pockets) and start Andino at third. I don't know if this will happen, if it's plausible, or if this is even a smart move - but seeing Beltran go down got me thinking. Thoughts?

Here's the deal w/ the Mets
their top prospect is an outfielder who just got sent down b/c someone else came off the dl. He’ll be back up now w/ Beltran down. They def. might be more interested in that extra bat now though, and Huff is an option. I dont see Luke fitting in as much, but he’s better than most of their outfield anyway, so it’s possible. Their system is pretty weak though. There are a few infield prospects I like (Tejada at SS being one of them), but they have nothing overwhelming.
Mora will not be released, nor will he ride the pine for Andino to start at 3rd. Mora is still a better hitter across the board than Andino (they have similar sugging numbers though) and an above average fielder, not to mention is getting payed a ton more. I like Dino too, but I do not want to see Izturis and Andino in the lineup at the same time consistently. Mora isn’t a 5 hole bat, but he’s a pretty damn good 7 or 8.

The Mets didn’t panic when Delgado went down, and I doubt they will now. If MacPhail couldn’t move Huff during his monster year, he must have been asking for the moon. Knowing him, I doubt if his asking price has dropped much, and I don’t expect teams to give up much for a three-month rental of Huff.

if this scenario were to happen… why wouldn’t they bring up snyder and put wiggy at 3rd?
What up?

snyder
i think that McPhail would probably want Snyder to get a little more experience at AAA before bringing him up to the Majors…just my opinion though, certainly not a fact

yep
my thoughts exactly. They JUST moved him to AAA. Give Wigs the job and let Snyder get comfy at AAA

I think Huff should command (maybe I’m a little biased cuz I’m a Huff fan) a package of top prospects, potentially including the team’s top prospect. The Mets could use him, but it wouldn’t help us much to deal Huff for some average prospects (and none where we really need them – middle infield!). Plus, Nick Johnson of the Nats will probably command the same in return, except that the Nationals definitely cannot be as picky as the O’s (they need help everywhere).

Huff would attract a nice package. I’m pretty sure he would be a Type A free agent and wouldn’t accept arbitration (if he has his usual second half numbers). So any trade package would have to be of greater value than two first round draft picks. But in this economy I don’t think teams are willing to give up that much. Instead the O’s might get something back like a Casey Kotchman or something.

yea
but do we really want a casey kotchman? i’d rather have hufflepuff.

He better go on a tear in the second half because Aubrey Huff has turned back into Aubrey Huff (i.e., someone who hits slightly above 100ish OPS+).

No way in the world a team gives up their top prospect for Huff
Even if we were a contender this year, would you want to give up, say, any of our top 3 pitching prospects, or Snyder, for 3 months of a decent first baseman (and MAYBE draft picks)?
Casey Kotchman comparisons? Let’s remember…Mark Teixeira >> Aubrey Huff.

Maybe, not likely
The Mets brass has said they’re looking for someone who can play 1b and OF, so while Huff is a possibility, he’s not good in the outfield. Probably better than Murphy defensively, but still. If they decide to make a move it will be for Mark DeRosa, a guy they can use as a super utility guy at 1b, 3b, 2nd, and the OF.
The most logical move seems to be trading Baez to the Mets. He’ll thrive in the NL with his ERA dropping and strikeout rate rising. He can take over for Putz in the back-end of the pen until Putz returns, then shift into a middle-relief role. That’s what the Mets need right now as well. All that praise that they upgraded their back-end, and K-Rod and friends have been knocked around.

lets trade them wiggy
hes a super utility player too! he even plays SS!! (wink wink)

I don't feel comfortable giving up any decent pitchers.
The arms will win us games in the long run. Why trade any of them unless we get the best prospect in their systems? Let’s not give away players. In 2010 we will be in play for winning the division.

Baez is in the final year of his contract
and 2010 may be a little ambitious for contending for the division

1B is the easy part
3B is a lot harder. Dino is NOT the answer at third.

I still like Huff's bat in the 4 or 5 hole in our lineup
How do you replace Huff’s power and presence? He is a part of this team and trading him means we better get better than we give. Huff can play 3rd base too.

Well he's got 9 HRs this year
So I don’t think his power is irreplaceable. I like him, but he’s certainly not giving us last year again.
Now, Huff at 3rd next year (with Mora gone) is more intriguing…don’t know whether the defense would hold up all year though

My guess is
That we will see Baez or Sherill traded and Huff or Scott talked about. The most likely being Baez as mostly a salary dump. Scott is a fan favorite and is pretty cheap and same goes for Sherill. Huff can be replaced by both Scott, and Wigginton (Huff has a career OPS of .825 and Wigginton’s is .784). In theory that is not too much of a sacrifice. However I dont think he is worth much more than a salary dump and therefore I don’t think he is traded.

MacPhail is on record
saying no salary dump trades this year. If it hold true, we shall see.
