GameThread: Orioles (32-38) @ Marlins (36-36)

Baltimore Orioles at Miami Marlins, Jun 24, 2009 7:10 PM EDT

R-848121-1188467604_medium

Fans (?) in Miami will be treated to one hell of an excellent pitching matchup tonight at 7:10. I mean, just take a look at these stat lines and try to control yourself. You'll likely be overcome with the desire to start an online petition to make this the All-Star Game starting matchup, or even name them Cy Youngs for their leagues.

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2009 - Jason Berken 1-3 5 5 0 0 0 0 26.1 33 20 20 2 10 16 6.84 1.63

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2009 - Ricky Nolasco 3-6 12 12 1 0 0 0 61.2 82 52 49 9 17 55 7.15 1.61

BUT SERIOUSLY, FOLKS! Nolasco is on the short list for Fantasy Baseball's Biggest Bust, 2009 (Starting Pitcher), up there with Daisuke Matsuzaka and Rich Harden, both of whom are on my fantasy team. I just put Daisuke on the FA market. I've seen enough!

Nolasco has also posted a 2.50 ERA in three starts since returning from a stint at AAA, so maybe I shouldn't bust on him so hard.

Stupid Nolasco

I drafted him in fantasy and dropped his ass when he went down to the minors.

I didn’t read last night’s game thread but I’m hoping one of you stepped up to identify the Golden Girls house.

Pretty boring lineup without Jones and Reimold

But then again, watching AJ is pretty painful.

Do you actually think I want that? We’ve had this conversation many, many times, and I just wanted Felix to get his shot.

Since being cut out of the lineup, though, Felix has continually shown up in limited playing time.

Absolutely

This is why I’d take Adam Dunn on my team over David Eckstein. There’s no question about it. But I’m with Johnny_S overall — when you’re a fringe player like Pie or Matos, right on the bubble between getting castoff and maybe finding a long-term payday as a 4th outfielder, I just don’t understand HOW a player couldn’t put their all into it. I thought that was going to be a double.

But then it just hung up there forever.

man

it really looks like the team is disheartened after yesterday’s game. They just don’t have the intensity here.

I don't know about that

HIts aren’t landing, and they’ve made some questionable, and one lazy, decisions defensively.

The two things the Orioles need is to go over fundamentals during BP

and hire a traveling “shrink” to anaylize why this team goes through so many highs and lows in such a short time. This would prepare us for 2010 and 11

O's take a series from the Mets, then travel to Philly and sweep the World Champs...

Then travel to Marlins and are on the verge of getting swept. This is a strange game.

I know he had a miscue tonight

But I will be damn glad to see the last of that sumbitch Bonifacio at 3rd. He can’t hit a lick but he can play that corner.

Jesus, Tom Davis just said we may have acquired our 1B of the future

no we didn’t, Tom. Our 1B of the future is maybe named Brandon Snyder, but it sure as hell ain’t Michael Aubrey.

Andy is confusing me. I know he said he would buy the bats however....

Eric Crozier 30,from the Maryland Blue Crabs and presently in Bowie? Michael Aubrey 30,from the Cleveland organization? Felix Pie from the Cubs? If you tell me he is stocking the minors then that if fine but we need 3rd basemen, SS and 2nd basemen. Not freaking 1st Basemen and outfielders. They are a dime a dozen.

I seriously doubt Andy thinks that he acquired the 1B of the future, either

He probably just needs more bats in AAA

Down 0 – 2 Wieters is batting .000/.000/.000

Down 1-2 Wieters is .071/.071/.071

Even 2-2 Wieters is .091/.091/.091

His numbers after going down 0-1/0-2/1-2 are just as bad while his stats when ahead are impressive.

I’m not sure what the league averages are, but I’ve just noticed that Wieters swings and misses quite often with two strikes on him. Matt seems to foul off numerous pitches to start each at bat, and then he ends up King on good pitches.

Do you have stats on how often he gets ahead in the count?

At least for a while there it seemed like he was working the count nicely and always getting in 1-0, 2-0, and 2-1 counts.

I created a long post

But then realized that I made a slight mistake and would have had to start over with a ton of math in order to truly relay his lines.

I will say that Wieters’ line is considerably better than when even or ahead. I’ve been noticing for weeks now that Wieters ends up screwing himself by going after pitches very early in the count, either whiffing or fouling off a few balls, and then badly protecting when down in the count.

A bit more patience early in his ABs would go a very long way as pitchers would be forced to pound the zone more often.

This link tells the entire story and is definitely worth a look.

The bottom line

Is that, cumulatively, Wieters is.152/.129/.281 with two strikes in 31 of his 65 total ABs.
