Trembley calling out Pie

Does anyone think this is a little bit weak on his part?

Star-divide

Adam Jones almost gets thrown out walking to first base on a single to right this past Sunday, Markakis has consistently, haplessly watched strike 3 on numerous occasions, while Adam Jones consistently, haplessly swings at strike 1. Luke Scott has gone cold (which is ok, we knew this is how he rolls), but we see more of him in left than Reimold. Hit-and-runs abound are going awry, but Trembley still orders them to be executed. Yet Dave calls out a guy's miscues (Pie) who plays about once a week, maybe even a week and a half, on the night that he contributed more offensively than Jones or Markakis. This bothers me. The struggles we've seen the last 3 games extended FAR beyond Felix Pie's gaffes. I felt like it was irresponsible of Trembley to call out a bench guy when the underlying problems stem from his starting fielders, namely at the top of the batting order. Making an example of a 4th (at best) outfielder is weak, Dave should call out the every night guys who are not as sharp as they should be or make more of an effort to avoid giving dugout signals for base-running plays that end up giving up outs on the basepaths.

I'd also like to go on record for saying that I agree with Earl Weaver that hit and runs are probably the worst plays in baseball. Any time you send a baserunner down the basepath at half speed waiting for ground ball contact and a batter shortening his swing to make contact even if the pitch isnt worth swinging at is a scenario where everyone on offense is at a disadvantage. I believe Earl said that himself.

Felix Pie's gaffes??

His playing style is one big gaffe.

Breweyboy18

Breweyboy18, you present an interesting way to approach this topic but your joke isn’t in line with the point im making: Why is Dave holding shitty players accountable while the starting guys, making equally awful mistakes, get the proverbial “billy martin”. Felix is clearly not a great player. But he’s a bench guy, the occasional pinch runner who gets a start in the outfield now and then and will probably disappear before 2010. BUT you don’t think its slightly weak for Trembley to suddenly decide to hold Felix Pie (essentially a non-entity) accountable while giving some other guys (supposedly more talented and ones we intend to “build the franchise” around) a pass? In fact, I think Trembley should be holding more players accountable more often. Especially in instances I’ve cited above: Markakis’ listless at-bats watching strikes 1, 2, 3 without moving the bat. Jones hacking at strikes 1 and 2, watching 3 go by then throwing a fit when he doesn’t agree. Look, I love all these guys, but lets face it, Dave needs to equally call his men to arms..not weakly hammer a guy who will be on waivers by July.

yeah...

that is poor management, not just in the baseball manager context, but from the general management/employee persepctive. weak, dude.

Praise in public/criticize in private.

Management 101. Also like I said in another post, what’s it supposed to show? He’s been letting shit like that slide with veterans for his whole tenure (Mora is exhibit A with her baserunning, BRob – sorry I love you – but you don’t hustle, etc), so now is everybody going to be all impressed that he called out a guy who plays every 5th day?

If you’re going to make an example out of somebody (which is fine), do it with somebody who means something like Mora rather than just an easy target like Pie.

Well, after all that...

Pie got to PH last night, and got a hit. He’s had barely half a season worth of major league PAs in his entire career. I hope he gets a chance to demonstrate if he’s any good, whether with the Orioles or not.

I am all for him going down to AAA right now, and calling Gathright up.

With all of the time Pie is getting to sit his ass on the bench, he is not having the chance to get consistent ab’s/develop (if there is any more of that). We can throw Gathright in that same exact 4th outfielder position. He has the wheels, can pinch run for Wieters, ZAUN, etc.

Or would Pie be going through the waiver process, and have the possibility of another team snagging him? I am not all that up to date on the whole waiver process/call ups between AAA and the bigs.

Pie is out of options

He’d have to pass through waivers. As shaky as he’s been, one of the other 29 teams would take a flyer on a five-tool guy. Shit, the Nats collect outfielders like they’re candy or something. What’s one more?

AM has said several times that Pie would never make it through waivers. I’m for keeping him in this role, anyway. I suspect with more playing time, he’ll be getting better, and injury could hit any of the starting outfielders at any time.

Trembley won't be here in 2010

Anyone actually think he’ll still be here next season?

The August swoon will hit and you’re done Dave. Never mind that we only have 1 consistent starting pitcher but he’s toast.

I agree calling out Pie is extremely weak when you can name a variety of boneheaded plays by any number of other players. Scott’s baserunning last Sunday was infuriating for example. Too many excuses.
