I mean, it’s not like you can blame some questionable strike calls on the 10-1 lead in its entirety, but it’s really pouring gasoline on the fucking fire here when we’ve had like three pitches go down the middle at belt length and get called balls, and then we’re getting Orioles guys run up on shit that’s six inches outside at shin height.

Albers threw up and in to Varitek. It clearly did not hit him, and the umpire did not signal that it hit him. But Varitek took off for first base and as soon as he did, the umpire made the signal that he got hit. It was bullshit. You could clearly see on the replay air between the ball and Varitek the entier time.

That wasn't a goddamn strike when Hendrickson threw it.

In fact, Hendo’s pitch was better. WTF was that? Goddamnit I wish there was some fucking accountability for MLB umpires. By and large they are still the best officials in pro sports, I believe…but god, when they are bad, they are so GLARINGLY FUCKING BAD it is just hideous.

but does it do any good? I doubt it. There is no reason any strike zone should be other than what is stated in the rule book. The fact that there clearly ARE individual strike zones out there and it is accepted, speaks to the absolute lack of accountability. There is a strike zone in the rule book. Call it.

I think it's a matter of consistency rather than being what the rulebook says

Most people probably don’t mind that it varies from umpire to umpire as long as it’s the same on the top and bottom halves of each inning. The last two nights it’s been pretty clearly not the same strike zone for the two teams.

I know, announcers talk about it, players talk about it, etc., but I think they are just rationalizing things that they believe will never change anyway.

as a side note after Bay's shattered bat...

the MLB needs to go ahead and ban maple bats. They’re just plain dangerous. You see several bats shatter per game… that just isn’t good. Just make a statement, “when play resumes after the all star break, all maple bats will be banned.” He can even quote me on that. Just protect the players and fans.
