Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

20 seconds in, part of a WBOC series on "Meet the Shorebirds". I did not know LJ grew up as an O's fan in Bowie, MD. "Going to Camden Yards as a kid, I was always, like, 'I wanna play here one day and be an Oriole'..." When was the last time you heard THAT? And I did not know he played OF in HS and is being converted into a 2B. And L.J. stands for Little Jerome, by the way.

I love Little Jerome!

I didn’t know he was from Bowie.

yeah...

l.j./little jerome is pretty great.

st. john’s is weird, though. it’s a military school, but also run by religious order…it’s not, like, opus dei or anything, i just find the combo sort of weird.

Religious military school?

I always joked about sending my daughter to one when she turned 13, but I didn;’t know they actually EXISTED….

Not exactly.

It is still a Catholic HS run by the Christian Brothers. However some time ago they went co-ed and made ROTC optional. I’m not sure what the ratio is, but I believe less than half of the students are enrolled in the ROTC program.

I’ll have to check with my nephew. He just signed on as a teacher and hockey coach.

FYI – don’t know if you follow Maryland basketball, but Marissa Coleman is another St John’s graduate.

I am a Senior at St. John’s and it turned Co-ed in 1991 and the JROTC program was turned optional then. Today, 33% of the school is in the JROTC program. It is run by the Lasallian brothers and has around 1,100 students. It has been known for baseball in the past and continues that tradition today. I was the manager last year and I knew LJ very well. He was a very nice kid and an amazing baseball player.

On a side note, I am a captain of the SJC hockey team and our head coach is not a teacher and neither are any of the assistant coaches. I don’t know who you are refering to because as far as I know we only have 1 head coach and 2 assistant coaches and none are teachers. I’m interested to know what you are talking about……

I wished he was batting better...

When was the last time you heard THAT?

This is why Jordan likes to draft local products.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

Not only that

But i think i remember him signing with us in large part because we were close to home and the team he wanted to play for. I think he dropped a little because of a strong commitment to UNC, but it has been a year since I read all that stuff so it kinda all blurs together between players.

He was committed to UNC

so that makes sense

No you're right

Hoes was pretty adamant about going to North Carolina.
