GameThread: Orioles (24-31) @ Athletics (23-30)

Baltimore Orioles at Oakland Athletics, Jun 6, 2009 9:05 PM EDT

Game time is 9:05.

If you've never seen Trevor Cahill, here's the scouting report:

“He’s good,” Chicago catcher A.J. Pierzynski told the Athletics’ official Web site of Cahill.

Sounds rough.

And here is grizzled veteran Dallas Braden's take on Oakland pitching:

“These guys are absolutely throwing the snot out of the ball,” Braden said.

Charming.

I didn't know it was Cahill tonight

He’s like an upgraded Chris Tillman.

Salazar coming?

According to the Sun it looks like it but he won’t be there for tonight’s game says Roch. Chezus, you would think they could rickshaw his ass out there before game time. Trembley will probably let him rot on the bench anyway instead of Melvin mfing Mora or Ty freaking Wiggy. Apparently Jorbert didn’t win many admirers when he watched a homer sail over his head in spring training without moving a muscle.

Hopefully Salazar is here to stay. We don’t need Hendrickson if we move Hernandez to the bullpen.

wtf is with their sudden refusal to play Reimold? what the hell?

Really, what is going on in Dave’s head?

Boy does that bottom 3rd of the lineup look like 9 outs waiting to happen.

really

i mean first he sits Luke, then Nolan who is hitting the ball pretty well, better then mora. At least he did the switcharoonie with the top of the order, but Nolan needs to be in their, i can understand giving Felix a day, thats good, it gives us speed. But why sit Nolan two days in a row.

It's quite possible

Nolan is sick. It’s not the Orioles have a media entourage with them – it’s the beat reporter for the Sun and that’s it, I’d imagine – one guy. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to find he has the stomach flu or some such ailment.

Trembley finally makes some line up moves and screws it up by putting Pie and Zaun in there.Pie has been nothing but a damn distarction since he’s been on the team.Maybe there’s a scout that wants to se ehim play. That would be great news. How i the hell does he expect Reimold to develop with his ass on the bench. And why not have Wieters catch Berken and Zaun and Hill tomorrow? Not fair to Berken to get the B lineup behind him tonight. We know they’re going to lose tomorrow why not put the best line up out there tonight? Fire Trembley and promote Allenson,he’s 17 games over .500

I think the A lineup has been averaging just about a run a game the last week, so not much of a loss if you ask me. As for Nolan, I think he’s started all but 3 games since he’s been called up. Don’t think his growth has been stunted, but that’s me.

Good Lord, I'm not calling for his head.

I’m just saying I’d like to hear the manager have a better thought-out reason to shake up the lineup than just to shake up the lineup. Because if he’s making changes and just sort of hoping something will work, well then we stand a chance of getting Lee Mazilli syndrome; different lineup after different lineup.

Baseball is a strange sport

One team can hit, pitch, run bases, and display confidence. The other team can not hit, can not pitch, can not field or run bases. Then it changes around two weeks later. Got to love it.

Orioles Considering Sano?
By Eddie Schmid [June 6, 2009 at 8:35pm CST]

The Baltimore Sun’s Jeff Zrebiec reports that the Orioles invited 16-year-old phenom Miguel Angel Sano to a workout at their baseball academy in the Dominican Republic yesterday. Orioles Director of Player Development David Stocksill came out of the tryout “impressed.”

Sano has been linked most often to the Pirates, who are rumored to be offering as much as $4MM to obtain the coveted shortstop prospect when international free agents are able to sign this July 2nd. Zrebiec notes that the Orioles have never dropped more than $1MM to

Yeah, but markets correct themselves....

…the teams that invested early in foreign academies got bargains, because the teams didn’t appreciate the value in it. Now, though, everyone knows about the foreign player market, so the bargains are gone.

….Let’s break out this K-Hole. Ooops. Nevermind.

by Jonny Pops on Jun 6, 2009 10:29 PM EDT reply actions

I'm actually watching this one....

….since, for whatever reason, MLB Network decided that this game should be televised nationally, and I get one of the handful of chances I get to actually watch a televised Oriole game in New York.

And the game sucks, no doubt about it. No chance to watch Wieters, the Orioles getting spanked in both halves of the inning, and sure, it is a lousy game. But one that gives me time to actually think about what I’m watching.

Jason Berken seems like a nice enough guy. But whether or not he is, think about who he is. He’s a twenty-five year old pitcher who has never been a big prospect. He didn’t get invited to spring training. He didn’t start the season in AAA. He’s had a long trip of having to believe in what he’s doing, having to keep doing it even though there didn’t look like much chance it would pan out. And since then, things have been better than you could have dreamed. You make the big leagues, you win your first start, you pitch even better your next time out.

And then this road trip, and your shortstop gets appendicitis and your team stops hitting except for Scott and you just get hammered by a bad team on a hot streak. And it has to feel, I imagine, like you are living this beautiful dream that is slipping away through your fingers.

This game hurts to watch, but I hope when it is over, those kids all look at each other and say “F#%k it”.

But for some reason I hadn’t looked at his line in awhile, and didn’t realize that he has devolved almost completely into a singles hitter.

I was trying to say that you wouldn’t even want your leadoff hitter, the guy who is expected to just reach and run, slugging at such a low percentage, so having a number five guy with that number is pretty pathetic.

Mora is still useful, but not so high up in the lineup.

Or send him to the instructional league and make him a 3B. We need this guy in the lineup. Snyder is the same way. He has a powerful swing and will drive in runs.

The Oakland Broadcast

I am from Pigtown but currently live in California and as such usually have to listen to the away team play by play or broadcast for away games. Today I heard the Oakland guys stating that Baltimore leads a self fulfilled destiny of mediocrity. I know we have had a ruff run oh say the last 11 years, but do we really think it is ok to lose. Not only lose but completely suck while doing it. Im starting to think that we do, its evident with our attendance and media coverage as its very difficult to care about something that doesn’t return the favor. Our player in my opinion just dont work as hard as others do (I went to the Dodgers Philly game today). They are breaking my spirit and heart.

by Kevin W on Jun 6, 2009 11:58 PM EDT reply actions

Part of it is....

a significant portion of our lineup is either in a slump or just plain not good enough. I think they all WANT to win.

I have to pick my words carefully due to the sensitivity of people that DO CARE

Camden Chat contains passionate O’s fans that love this team. That is not always the case in our community as we have front running fans and those that will only support a winner. With that in mind I do see a “down” attitude when things do not go our way. But I also see a team with spirit when we are rolling. It all begins sometimes with the manager and I don’t see Trembly as the guy to take us to the promise land.

for starters

If you have been an Orioles fan recently you cant be a fan of a front runner, your a fan of the team and the city they represent. I do agree though, its just something about this team right now… Its not just a slump. I love it when they win, but I fell the same way.

What I mean is......

Trembley is a teacher and diciplinarian. I don’t see him as a big time manager that can take a team of vets (Torre, Weaver, Martin etc) and do great things and make things happen. That guy is out there and I think by the end of 2010 he will be in place to lead this team and it’s pitching staff to the next and final level. World Series. We are patient.

AMEN Baysox 39.

I can’t stand front runners either Although, I wish there were more people at the games, and I personally would love to help can only go to one or 2 per year due to cost, distance, 2 young boys etc. Its much easier to go to the blue rocks or ironbirds for me.That being said it is more fun without bandwagon jumpers or sox or yankees fans. like i said in my last post, i saw a lot of very, very bad phils teams growing up, and when we finally won it it was up there with getting married and my 2 boys births as the greatest feeling in the world. Bandwagon jumpers could never feel that. God I hope, sometime soon I can see that for the O’s..That would be the happiest drive down 95 for me ever to get a champs hat and shirt..

As good as Oakland looked the last two games

They are still a bad team. Their record is the same as the O’s. We should put all of this in perspective and look long range for both teams. I personally like the O’s upside better than the A’s.
