GameThread: Orioles (24-32) @ Athletics (24-30)

Baltimore Orioles at Oakland Athletics, Jun 7, 2009 4:05 PM EDT

Game time is 4:05 eastern.

Rich Hill tries to be the stopper as the O's look to avoid the sweep and their 5th consecutive loss. His last outing he pitched 7 innings of shutout baseball and that's probably what he'll have to do again today barring a miracle recovery by the Orioles offense.

The A's counter with Vin Mazzaro making his 2nd big league start. He got the win against the White Sox in his debut and didn't allow a run in 6.1 innings.

Did Dave pick that lineup out of a hat?

Not that lineup position really matters all that much…

Before the season started

I think Amber was interviewing him…someone anyway. He said his favorite position to play is 2B although he knows he won’t get much time there for the O’s because of Brian. He’s played 120 games there in his career, second only to his time at 3B. I have no idea how he is there, though. He certainly doesn’t LOOK like a 2B.

how would your lineup look today

First and foremost

BRob and Huff should never get the fucking day off on the same day. This is part of the reason we always lose on Sunday, because Trembley’s obsessed with conceding the game so highly paid starters can have the day off. If there are no injuries involved, only one “top” starter gets the day off. Period. That goes for any day. No more goddamn skeleton crews.

Also, if BRob is going to get the day off then Markakis should bat leadoff. I don’t care that he only has moderate speed. He has a good OBP and we can keep power bats behind him to drive him in. Jones batting leadoff is fucking ridiculous. It’s yet another instance of being obsessed with low probability running plays, rather than simply looking at higher probability OBP and power numbers. It just shows me, once again, that this guy has no idea what the fuck he’s doing. Hopefully he can prove it some more this season so we can get a real manager around here.

But they’re not this bad.

We’ve heard for years that the attitude in Baltimore is absolutely horrid and dangerously contagious.

Even a mediocre team would be able to snap out of something like this. The guys simply don’t care enough to will themselves to victory.

My point was just that there have been many, many pitching coaches, players, and managers who have come out of Baltimore and been relieved as their entire stint was bogged down with negativity and a sense of hopelessness.

I realize that people don’t like Bavasi, but one of his bigger knocks on Bedard was that Erik had absolutely no idea how to win, and couldn’t live up to the hype on a “contending” club.

Oh shit

I never saw this.

The Rays won because they had the change in attitude that I am talking about. Joe Maddon, management and ownership coaxed the players into believing in the cause, and that is what we’re lacking. Obviously I’m not saying that a bad team can NEVER win again, just that we have to find the right manager, coaching staff, and players who believe in the cause.

Maybe it’s because he didn’t learn conversational English until college? Did everyone forget he grew up speaking French?

Here's the prrof...
Mark Lambert, then the head coach at Norwalk and now the pitching coach at Trinity College, thought Bedard would be an adequate reliever. Two years later, Bedard was a Junior College All-American whose parents barely recognized him. Somewhere along the way, he learned English, bumped his fastball up 10 miles an hour and decided what he wanted to do with his life.

“That was the changing point in my life, pretty much,” he said. “If I hadn’t gone to try out for that team, I wouldn’t be here.”

“You’ve got to remember his background — he came from Canada and it’s not like he was on All-Star teams,” added Lambert, who took in a game at Camden Yards last week. "He grew up in a purely recreational situation for athletics. He wasn’t even playing high school baseball, so it’s not like he was Joe All-State. There’s absolutely no ego with him at all. Ever.

“And there never was with us. He was a First-Team All-American and you wouldn’t know he was the best player on the team. He was just like everybody else — he just did what he was supposed to do.”

Bedard helped Lambert to a national championship — the first and last of the coach’s career — before going on to be a sixth-round pick in the 1999 First-Year Player Draft. The left-hander said his baseball maturation came at the same time he was learning English, which he did by fraternizing with his teammates and taking the lowest level course his college had to offer.

“When we were home, if we had to order a pizza in English, I would tell my friend, ‘You order,’ because I was too shy,” he said. “I really forced myself to speak it and learn it well. I had to take the first English classes. There’s the English you have a credit for and there’s an English below that — that’s the one I had to take. I kind of had to re-learn how to speak it and write it.”

Duck, I don’t doubt the veracity of your claim at all. I know PLENTY of people who picked up English in their teens and speak extremely good English. And Bedard’s speaking skills are excellent. Like I said, I would have mistaken him for a native English speaker w/o any prior information. But the dude does not have any opinions or thoughts whatsoever. He has the language capacity to articulate opinions if he had them, but he doesn’t have any.

Yeah

Look at the quotes from everyone last week when all of the starters were pitching well and everything was peachy.

Markakis and Roberts and Jones wouldn’t stop gushing about how much they loved this young dynamic talented club.

No team is as good as it looks when it’s winning or as bad as it looks when it is losing.

That's kind of my point

When things start spiraling out of control, belief in the greater cause should will you out of tough times.

There is a reason why certain franchises (Mets, Jets, etc.) continually lose irrespective of the circumstances; the culture isn’t there.

In order to play well you have to believe in the first place

There are teams, like Houston in the NFL, where every single spare part is there, but the players don’t know what exactly it takes to win, and their coach doesn’t know how to get to them, so they’ll always be that “trendy” pick as they have so much “potential” that never pans out.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

Again I'll disagree.

I’ve played on a lot of all star teams, college teams, summer teams where everybody wanted to win more than anything but if the talent isn’t there you’re not going to win. Then I’ve played on some teams where a good percentage of the guys couldn’t care less except about personal stats and getting wasted after the game, but they had talent and we won.

by O'sFan21 on Jun 7, 2009 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

It's obviously a combination of the two

But talent alone doesn’t bring championships.

You can have a very skilled yet apathetic roster and easily lose. Conversely, you can have a bunch of scrubs who want to win really badly and easily lose.

My point is just that bringing up all of these prospects won’t propel us to a championship per se; in order to be elite there has to be a chance in attitude.

I don't know how to really articulate this

I’m just speaking from experience when I say that the most successful teams are almost always filled by guys who have been bred to win above everything else.

Therefore it’s encouraging to see our MiL affiliates winning, but reaching Baltimore must be such a drag.

Not to mention

The losing culture that everyone has talked about, Andy MacPhail came in and got rid of a lot of those guys. I don’t think this has to do with the culture of the team. It’s a slump plus a team that just isn’t that good. I mean there is obviously no way to say which of us is right. We’ll never know. But I don’t buy it.

I get it.

Our strategy is to confuse the other teams by letting our “starters” pitch reliever-length innings, and letting our relievers pitch ace-quality long outings.

by Gonfoo on Jun 7, 2009 5:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I just sat down and saw 3 to (of course) 0

Then I opened the line score and thought maybe Hill had settled in after a rough first inning. Then I noticed 2 hits and looked at the play by play, Hah.

It is a chore to give a shit about this team. I’m to the point where I don’t really believe the hype about the minor leagues. This team needs more than a few pitchers (Tillman, Arrieta, Matusz, assuming they all pan out). I know the pitching will help, but these sad sacks have a long way to go before they can compete with good teams.

joe torre

works magic withe the lineup he has in LA
feel like we have more talent why cant we WIN????

by huggie on Jun 7, 2009 6:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Because he has better players, dude.

Ethier? Kemp? Broxton? Billingsley? Heard of ’em?

And they are in a MUCH easier division.

And it's better than the NL West

NO division is worse than the NL West.

honestly...

the Dodgers are way more consistent. They don’t lose three games in a row. Torre has better players, plays in a weak division and all that stuff. But when things look bad (like Manny going down), he knows how to make the bleeding stop. Somehow he always comes out looking like he knew what he was doing all along.

Dave is not like that. Face it.

On the plus side...

we’ve gotten 7.1 IP of shutout ball from the ‘pen. That ain’t bad…

it is not what I would call good.

Think about what it means… seven plus innings from our pen.

or covering the series

.. almost 20 innings from the pen. at least there was a day off before and after the series..

No pinch runner for Mora? No pinch hitter for Salazar?

Maybe he moves to bench coach...

and we hire Torre away from the Dodgers! That’s it!

Watching Wieters is painful

Because you know he isn’t going to reach.

but DAMN, I’m sure not seeing any light at the end of the tunnel here. C’mon Matt, you gotta start hitting SOMETIME, right?

So do we just tip our cap to yet another "great" pitching performance against us???

Great game for Bass, Albers, and JJ, but a whole bunch of shit sucking for everybody else.

Well, you know we faced a good pitcher today, and I’m really proud of the guys for battling the whole way through. A tough loss, but we’ll bounce back.

I'll keep saying this as long as I'm here

It is not good when Bass, Albers and J.J. are doing great. That means that others are doing poorly. When the Orioles win, they will not win because of Bass, Albers and Jim Johnson. When they win, we’ll talk about Sherrill getting saves, the young pitchers going five innings and Wieters hitting a double and a homer. We won’t be talking about Robert Andino spraying two singles…

Guys who can keep you in a game can contribute to wins

only if the team around them is competitive, in talent and in spirit. Teams that will fight to score runs can take advantage of guys like that. This team can’t, apparently.

hit 15 homers during our homestand
