Mostly On-Topic Poll: Least Favorite Oriole All-Time

Everyone is in a terrible mood. The team has been horrible lately. I decided to find an informative, interesting way to vent some of that anger.

Who is your least favorite/most hated O of all-time? As long as they were ever on the Orioles they count. Reggie Jackson, Curt Shilling, Sammy Sosa, Lenny Webster, Jay Gibbons, whatever. It doesn't matter how long they were with the O's or how good/bad they might have been in their time with the organization, just how much you look back at them with disgust and burning hatred.

Personally, I think i'm going Shilling. Name a few though. You might just bring back enough bad memories to change my mind.

Terry Matthews. Armando Benitez. Norm Charlton.

Basically the entire bullpen from 1998 makes me throw up in my mouth. Especially Terry Matthews, who waddled around the field like a duck.

Also the lineup from 2003 or so. I really truly hated Geronimo Gil, if only because he had just…just no business at all having a major league job. i was also particularly put off by watching Tony Batista.

Terry Mathews.

I went to the one playoff game we lost to the Mariners in ‘97. It was 2-0, Seattle, heading into the 9th. In waddles Mathews. My entire section groaned. Mathews surrendered 2 runs. My entire section collectively slapped their foreheads in exasperation. Bottom of the 9th, the O’s manage to score 2 runs – which would have tied the game but for Mathews’ incompetence. My entire section cursed The Pear under their breaths.

Except it wasn’t under their breath, it was screamed out loud. With profanity. All the way home.

I saw that game last year on Orioles Classics

You could tell that the fans knew what they were getting with Humpty Dumpty Mathews. Every pitched that missed its mark, they were on him. It was ugly to watch. I watched that whole replay (without checking the score online) figuring, “Well, they wouldn’t be airing this if we lost.”

Showed me.

Corey Patterson....by a mile

He would have won a gold glove if his offense wasn’t a complete liability. He’d start out terrible and swing at everything and anything. Then he’d have a session or two with Doctor Swing aka Terry Crowley, have a two week period where he’d look like he was getting it together. Then he’d slip back into the same old routine. Horrible OBP. Pop-outs. Horrible strikeouts. He was a talented player that I wanted to succeed but by the end of his stint in Baltimore, I was over it. Now he’s with the Nats with their Triple A affliate. Again, great defense…terrible, terrible streaky offense.
I never liked Chris Sabo much either. Maybe it was the goggles.

I love Curt!

Yes he was horribile for the O’s , if i remember i think in hes 3 years his eras were 9, 6, and 7 or something like that..t.but for those of us who also phils fans , i can’t hate on curt..1993, nuf said
and 2. he lived like 3 minutes from me when he was playing for the phils in kennett square and is a very nice guy.
That being said, my all time least favorite Oriole is Sosa. I expected so much, and even bought his jersey that year, which i rarely do, but I was so excited to have him. Boy was that a bust!! Other than the obvious though I also hated Albert Belle from the start. i never liked him in Cleveland, and I kno the old saying hate him on another team, love him when he’s on yours, but thats not true. I HATED him. I know he hit ok, 290 average, but he was not a team player at all.
And finally for me. a less obvious choice, David Newhan, It seemed like he struck ot every at bat. i hear hes out of baseball now after he got cut, no suprise there, he was horrible..

just to clarify

I dont hate Shilling because of his time in B’more. I dont even remember his time with the O’s (remember, I was 8 when threw his final pitch for the O’s and I was living in NJ. I didn’t even really know what the O’s were yet). I hate him because I think he’s a giant douche. The fact that he played for the Orioles at one point make him my most hated O of all time.

fair enough

I certainly understand why people don’t like him. 38 pitches is a bad blog, and bloody sock, damaging a ball/strike machine etc…All I was going on was his time here and the few times I met him around town, of course its been 9 years since he left and I haven’t seen in person since 2001 when he came back to kennett for a charity outing. He still is very active with ALS, thats why he named one of his kids gherig. But I certainly understand why people dislike him.

Not liking a person because of their politics IS a sign of ....

immaturity if not plain stupidity.

You can disagree with another’s politics, but to let that color how you view them as a person is not the mark of an adult. Some of my closest friends hold opinions and beliefs at opposite ends of the spectrum from me. They are every bit as good a friends as those who agree completely with me.

And no, I did not call someone an idiot for holding an opinion contrary to mine. I called them an idiot for disliking someone based on their political views.

He fills me with rage

That game where he gave up the home run to Griffey is legend in my family because I was so angry. 15 year old Stacey watching the game and when they bring in Pennington I’m screaming at the TV and my mom is telling me to pipe down. I’m just yelling at the TV, “IT’S KEN GRIFFEY JUNIOR! BRAD PENNINGTON! WHAT ARE THEY THINKING! HE’S GOING TO HIT A GRAND SLAM! A GRAND! SLAM!” Of course he didn’t give up a grand slam because his first pitch was a wild pitch that scored a run. After the wild pitch I turned off the TV and stormed out of the room. My mom was like, “You’re not even going to watch it?” and I was like “I DON’T NEED TO WATCH IT! GRIFFEY IS GONNA HIT A HOME RUN OFF THAT LOSER!!” So I didn’t see the home run until I watched the replay later that night, but man was it a shot.

Gotta be Ponson

Now I’ll admit that I’m fairly young in my Orioles fandom. So I don’t remember many, many years of gut-wrenching mediocrity (and worse) all that well.
But Sidney Ponson. Jesus. The guy evidently couldn’t even be bothered to stay in shape for his multi-million dollar job as a professional athlete, which is scandalously disrespectful to baseball and to the untold number of guys who would work four times as hard to have the opportunity he got. They’ve got brains but he’s got talent. And his arm is worth a million dollars in the show while all of their limbs put together ain’t worth seven cents a pound. Sidney’s the real-life Nuke LaLoosh, except that he is in no way even remotely charming. Most of the time when a player performs badly, I make it a rule to try not to question his focus or work ethic. With Sidney, I questioned it constantly.
The whole irresponsible-fratboy-drunk shtick is much more loathsome in a grown man with a job where people count on him. If it were “what he needed to do to win,” I would put up with it, grudgingly. But it was just a symptom of the fact that he didn’t give a shit.

And, not as a player, but I hated the hell out of Tom Trebelhorn. Thought he was the worst 3rd base coach in history. We had more guys thrown out at home under his reign that any other team in baseball. (then again, apparently he may not be to blame for our shitty running game.

Stupid batting stance & looked like he never lifted anything heavier than 12 oz. in his entire life. 31HR & a .309 OBP to go along with decidedly un-catlike reflexes at 3B. To further cement his doom, at this time the club decided to put the worst Orioles logo in the history of baseball right on the sleeve – the “fun” bird.

Tony Fatista, swingin’ for the fences, wavin’ at ground balls, and wearing the “fun” bird. Almost enough to make me give up baseball right there.

by Jonny Pops on Jun 12, 2009 10:21 AM EDT reply actions

I don't think there is a single player I hated.

Hate is a strong emotion to expend on some ballplayer you watch for the purposes of entertainment.

I’m not sure I can even say there are any Orioles I didn’t like. It’s not as if I ever socialized with any of them and therefore knew if they were great people of total assholes.

I can say there were players I was never a fan of or whom I had wished we had never traded for. For example I got tired of Ponson’s inability to grow up and his sense of entitlement. Trading for Sosa never made any sense to me and I never found any contribution he made that made me believe he was of any value to the team. I was not much of a fan of Kent Benson. At the time I would have kept Maine over him and once he did come over he struck me as a guy that you could never count on to put forth his all for the team.

I don’t like me players who think something is owed to them. The only time I consider them to be at all acceptable is if their constributions are on the order of magnitude that a little selfishness becomes an acceptable price.

Who ruined the O's

Well, I did. You did. We all did. Every poor sap who bought into the “Ripken Years” saga of idolizing our home town hero forced this franchise into a never ending spiral of defeat. A life time .270 hitter. A shortstop with a two step range. (did you ever see Aparico or Belanger play) and now he’s in the hall of fame. For what? Showing up every day? I could place a rock anywhere on the field of play and I could safely say it would not get an error. Here, I’ll say it. Cal Ripken ruined the O"s. Or, a few owners inability to put winning ball games above putting butts in seats did.. We are all to blame.

So a rock would hit 431 HR? Get 3184 hits? Sure. Be a lifetime .336 hitter in the playoffs (I use AVG, even though it sucks as a measure of usefulness, because I imagine it’s the only offensive statistic you understand).

BTW: according to advanced metrics that I won’t frighten you by trying to explain, Cal was a BETTER SS than Aparicio in the field and in his best years, as good as Belanger.

Glenn Davis? Broke his jaw in a bar fight.

Sidney Ponson? Alcohol abuse led to most of his problems.

Alan Wiggins? He lived a lifestyle that greatly increased his chances of acquiring AIDS with IV drug use.

Albert Belle didn’t cost us as much money as popularly believed, either. 80% of his contract was covered by insurance.

Now, I’m not to defend the morality of a person who runs over annoying trick-or-treaters with a vehicle. But Albert Belle’s baseball demise was not hastened by any action he took.

Albert Flipped Us Off in Eutaw St Seats

I told this story while sitting out in Eutaw St reserve seats last week. In fact, everytime I sit there I’m reminded of the time Sir Albert gave us the bird, acting as if he was scratching the back of his head. I remember thinking, “they pay this guy $12 million a year?”. Good riddance to him and his hip. I’m also reminded of a time Brady Anderson lolligagged after a base hit and then, as if he didn’t care, threw the ball back in to nobody, allowing a run to easily score. Ah, to sit in RF and look at Markakis and Jones – real ballplayers.

The great thing about hating Sid as an Oriole is that you know you have good friends in what, maybe 4 other franchises.

Seriously, I wonder how many times he would appear— or already appears— on other teams’ Most Hated posts? Frankly, while I understand those guys (especially the Ranger fans), I still think we are the club/fans/franchise with the major rights to Sid-hating. I mean, not only did we have him twice (tying us with the Yerks), but we had most of his minor league career to get jerked around by him plus the most total years of getting ear-f*cked in the bigs. And for a big piece of change— one that may qualify in adjusted dollars as the Least Bang for Buck Returned by an Orioles Organization Investment. Ever.

Dude, am I wrong?

Also, I really, really disliked Albert Belle. And I think I’ll just leave that there, ‘cause I’m starting to hyperventilate.

I guess I was talking about an entity that may be too hard to articulate— something like “high investment level divided by partially realized potential over wilfull disregard for self and organization plus the square root of abandonment of career equals alcoholic flame out.” Sid’s got that one cornered, far as I’m concerned.
