2009 Draft day thread
Just in case anyone wants to chat during the draft, I figured i'd throw up a thread. I have no I dea how i'm going to make this long enough to get to the limit to be able to post this, so i'm going to ramble on as long as I can. I'm glad we aren't getting Strasburg because his arm scares me to death and I think he's gonna be injured ALOT and make all his money from his signing bonus (have fun paying that, Natinals). And yes, you can all save this is shove it in my face when he's the second coming of Cy Young.
FanPosts are user-created content and do not necessarily reflect the views of the editors of Camden Chat or SB Nation. They might, though.

Ben McDonald
is the O’s player rep at the draft. Anybody with any back story on this? Pretty cool, imo. Plus, Ben wasn’t as big a bust as folks on TV are making him out to be. Pretty sure I recall some comments here on CC to back that up.

I really think they need to open this to fans
you know the diehards would show up. Maybe it wouldnt be like the NFL (definitely) but it’d be better.

He didn't play well this year
Defensively or offensively. He was good but people doubt him now as a SS which kills his value.

Well in comparison
he batted .390 as a sophomore, his HR dropped from 9 to 4, and his doubles dropped from 19 to 15 (in 6 more AB’s). You expect him to improve and he disappointed.

If your going High School, going for the most signable of a roughly equal group of pitchers seems like a good call.
Least amount of risk if he doesnt work out, not like Matzek who is apparently looking for record setting money. Plus it frees up some cash in later rounds to grab a players other teams might have passed on.

quick read...
hobgood is 245 pounds; baseball america guys seem to think that he’s pretty much where he’s going to be at physically; his fastball tops out at 95, but seems pretty consistently in the 92-94 range and he has a pretty sweet curve w/ late break.

Matt Hobgood is the 2009 Gatorade NAtional Baseball Player of the Year
Some others from that list include:
2007: Rick Porcello
2006: Justin Upton
2005: Clayton Kershaw
2002: Zack Greinke
2001: Casey Kotchman
Sheffield and A-Rod also won this award way back in their high school days.
So hey, some of the results speak for themselves.
Hobgood looks a little big, who knows, once he gets on better training and diet, lose some weight, up his velocity, develop his changeup. I have never really paid attention to the MLB draft, so I can’t really talk much more than that ha.

I'm not so pleased
with this pick. KG at BP says he would but him beneath the big 3 and Erbe, above only Patton. Certainly there are plenty of great arms in MiLB below our big 3, but I was hoping for a bit more of an upside play.
Hobgood seems to be a #3 type. Which is fine I suppose, but hard to get really excited about.

especially at #5. Seems like a big disappointment.
But Jordan is standing behind the O’s scouting. Mychal Givens at #54 for the O’s. KG likes that one.

reax from keith law, mlb.com...
(per roch)
ESPN.com’s Keith Law:
“Hobgood is a big strong kid with a live arm and a sharp breaking ball, as well as a baseball-rat mentality that has made him a favorite among area scouts. Hobgood will sit in the low 90s and touch 94 with a good downhill plane that should make the heavy pitch hard for hitters to elevate. His curveball is already above-average, one of the best in the country this year, with a very hard, late downward break like a knuckle-curve. He’ll flash a changeup, but doesn’t have feel for the pitch yet. He lands stiffly on his front leg with heavy recoil, but he generates good leverage after a big stride and his arm works well.”
MLB.com:
“Hobgood is a big, strong right-hander with two plus offerings in his heavy fastball and outstanding curve. Some small tweaks to his delivery should help him find even better fastball command. If he can add a changeup to go along with his other offerings and his tremendous mound presence, he has the chance to be a front-of-the-rotation starter in the future.”

i have to wonder, now...
if they really ARE going to make a bigger play for sano than they’ve let on. i mean, getting your ducks in a row on signability for its own sake is bunk, in my opinion, but in a draft class where there doesn’t seem to be a lot of no brainer plays, maybe you take a couple risks here and there, replenish the system and live to fight another day.

This is what I'm hoping
There’s not really anyone out there worth breaking the bank for, so if you go for relatively affordable options among players without much to differentiate them from one another, you can spend the money saved on upside elsewhere — the Caribbean, Asia, free agents (tho’ I haven’t looked at next year’s class to see if anyone worthwhile might be available).

5th round pick
ashur tolliver; crummy numbers at university of arkansas little rock, but…
from Baseball America:
All-American SP
Pitcher of the Year: Ashur Tolliver, lhp, Oklahoma City
TOP 10 PROSPECTS, 2009 DRAFT: #1
Oklahoma City, with three all-Americans, added hard-throwing LHP Ashur Tolliver, who transferred from Arkansas-Little Rock after going 3-0, 2.17 in relief in the Cape Cod League last summer.
from Perfect Game:
This year, the best prospect at the NAIA level, according to PG Crosschecker, is Oklahoma City pitcher Ashur Tolliver, an Arkansas-Little Rock transfer. The 6-foot, 170-pound lefthander struggled in Division I a year ago, going just 2-5, 7.94, but he showed flashes of brilliance last summer in the Cape Cod League with three plus pitches, including a fastball that topped out at 94 mph and a slider at 84. If Tolliver can establish any sense of consistency in a new environment this spring, he could emerge as a third- or-fourth rounder.

Come on Devin! Be awesome!
I’ve always wanted a Harris jersey, but I always thought it was kinda lame to just get your last name on a jersey (no offense to anyone). We had Willie Harris for a hot minute, but that wasn’t exactly jersey worthy.
as a side note, David Harris was my favorite player in the NFL draft a couple years ago for the obvious reason. Then he got drafted by the JETS. Ugh. (if I havent mentioned it enough, I’m a Giants fan, so yea.)

he’d apparently transferred from uva to ut, from the ut website…
“Jake Cowan is someone that Coach (Skip) Johnson thinks should be able to come in and compete for a weekend spot next year,” UT associate head coach Tommy Harmon said. “He pitches between 88-92 miles-per-hour and commands his breaking ball and changeup with the ability to throw all his pitches for strikes.”
The Roswell, Ga., native posted a 2-1 record with a 3.34 ERA and 28 strikeouts over 32.1 innings as a freshman at Virginia in 2008. He pitched four games as a mid-week starter, earning wins over Virginia Commonwealth and Longwood.
Cowan was 9-2 with 98 strikeouts in 76 innings as a senior at Roswell High School to earn team MVP and all-state honors. He was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 14th round of the 2007 MLB Draft. He logged a 6-2 record as a junior and a 5-1 mark as a senior.
After high school, Cowan was ranked the 60th best prospect in the country by Perfect Game and was named first-team All-Southeast and second-team All-American by Perfect Game in 2007.

Jim Callis on Hobgood
I think we were light on Hobgood all spring. Don’t know if I’d put him right with the elite HS pitchers (Matzek, Turner, Purke, Wheeler, Miller), but he’s not far behind. The Orioles say ability drove that pick, but his signability relative to the other HS arms couldn’t have hurt.
