Our SS situation

Does anyone else find it a little odd that the O's are scrambling around, trying to figure out what to do with Pie or Salazar, all so we can keep both Izturis and Andino?  Two virtually identical players with very little bat?

Does anyone think we've lost more recently, with no Izturis, than we've gained, with Pie and Salazar on the bench?   I'd rather have Andino keep playing SS, with Ty Wiggington in there late in games after Andino is PH for, and occasionally starting, and keep Pie and Salazar on the roster.

Wiggington isn't ideal out there obviously, but he's not atrocious, and I think it's worth it to keep Pie and Salazar, who are just the kind of cheap and useful bench options this team has rarely had over the past several years. .

i say trade izturis

He really has no long term potential value and say what you will about Dino at least he is young. I feel the same about Dirt Bag Wiggy, although you have to keep at least one of those guys they could both be useful to a competing team and while you cant get much in return there are going to be a few teams that would like to have one of those guys on the bench.

They ain't tough enough, smart enough or fast enough.

but if you trade Dirt Bag Wiggy and Izturis, then you have no back up infielders…

What up?

i meant

That we should only trade one.

Agreed

Izturis may as well be traded. At least Andino has a bit more upside than he’s shown so far, he might progress a little bit. We really don’t need both of them.

They need to make a roster move soon

with Izzy coming off of the DL, and both Pie and Salazar are out of options and are good enough to have some small trade value, rather than outright losing them. So MacPhail is shopping them. Personally, I say send Berken back to the minors.

I don’t know why the fuss about light hitting shortstops…both Izzy and Dino have good gloves, although Dino suffers from the occasional brain fart here and there, but he’s young. They both have speed on the basepaths, so on the rare occasion that they do get on, they’re a good bet to score with the top of the order behind them.

Sure we’d all love the Second Coming Of Ripken but I say we work with what we’ve got here, there’s not that much talent at the position out there, and it’s not like we’re paying $8M for Jack Wilson or dealing with the ship of fools from last year.

if we send berken back to the minors

we are A) short a starter and B) short on pitching period which isnt so great for a team with an already over-worked pen

by twistedlogic on Jul 10, 2009 8:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah…I don’t see the logic behind sending him back down. Its not like we are going to have a sudden push to compete in this division this year. So keeping him around is not the most awful thing that has occurred this year.

I’d tend to agree with the Dino/Izzy situation. I’d prefer we kept Dino if we wanted to trade off one of the two.

Also, no reason to get rid of Pie, he is a capable 4th OF. And he has been hitting much better since he moved to that position.

Also, all of these guys trade values won’t be very high, keep that in mind.

It's not a permanent move with Berken

but since he has options you can send him down for a week and figure out what to do with what we’ve got, though I’d just DFA Salazar and see what happens, since we already have 2-3 guys that are capable of playing 1B/3B/DH.

yea but i'd hate to not get anything for whoever we DFA

not that we’d get anything for salazar in a trade anyways, but its nice to think we would

Sending Berken down makes sense

The O’s don’t need a 5th starter until June 21st, and you can call him back up for that start.

by dkdc on Jul 10, 2009 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Berken starts tonight

They can send him down after the game and activate Izturis tomorrow.

by dkdc on Jul 10, 2009 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions

or they could send down Hernandez before the game tonight

and have Izturis ready to go. It wouldn’t be permanent but it would buy them some time.

Exactly

Hernandez can get in a start at AAA, then come back up in 10 days to make his next start for us after the ASB.

I just think it’s hilarious that the team wants to make this move right before we have 4 days off. If we lose Pie or Salazar because we have to have Izturis on the team for these 3 days, that would be absurd.

Hernandez goes to Norfolk

and the scenarios laid out by you and Stacey comes to fruition.

Trade Salazar or Huff

Even if we only get a PTBNL for Salazar, some NL team would do it. We signed him for nothing so even if we DFA him its not a big deal.

Pie is far more valuable than Salazar.

Also

considering AM’s mancrush on Pie he isn’t getting DFA

And who plays CF if Jones gets hurt

or, God forbid, needs a day off? It ain’t gonna be Luke Scott. And I’m not thrilled at the prospect of Nicky or Nolan in CF, either, should Adam get hurt. I don’t even want them in there for an occasional day off. Somebody’s gotta back up of OF, and Pie is doing that. If anyone has to go, it has to be Salazar.

Stop using logic.

Any suggestion that Pie is on the team for a purpose besides stroking McPhail’s ego can’t possibly make sense.

Or that the fact that Pie still has an upside

although that is quite small right now. Mr. Duck has a point.

I'm not a big guy on splits

But hasn’t he batted really well since taking on the 4th OF spot?

by John Stephens on Jul 10, 2009 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

He's definitely been improving

Though it’s small sample size.

But you have to like the way he comes into games ready to play and still has enthusiasm, even with the very limited playing time.

SOMEBODY has to play CF if Adam can't

Do we really want to gamble on our CF getting through a half a season with no days off and no injuries? I don’t..

Pie and Salazar

You have to trade pie or slazar because there isnt enough roster space and they both are out of minor league options

by orioleswillbe on Jul 10, 2009 2:32 PM EDT reply actions

Also, why is the team freaking out over a roster move today?

So we can play 3 days, and then have 4 days off? Why don’t we just leave Izturis on the DL after after the ASB and then figure things out?

Maybe something will make itself clear by then – Huff going on the DL, a trade, etc.

Other options include sending down Hernandez, since he’s not starting this weekend, or Mickolio. To lose Pie or Salazar would be terrible roster management.
