The Orioles activated Cesar Izturis on Friday after the shortstop spent more than a month on the disabled list because of appendicitis.

Rookie pitcher David Hernandez was sent to Triple-A Norfolk to make room for Izturis. Hernandez is 2-2 with a 3.94 ERA in five starts for the Orioles.

Hernandez is expected to be back in Baltimore soon. There was speculation that the O's would move either outfielder Felix Pie or infielder Oscar Salazar to make room for Izturis.

Izturis, who is hitting .260 with one homer, 13 RBIs and nine stolen bases, is slated to bat ninth tonight in the series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Not sure I get this

I know Berken is scheduled for tonight, but a few things…

1) Did we REALLY need to activate Cesar Izturis 3 games before a 4 day break? Why not wait until after the break?

2) Doesn’t Jason Berken need a lot more work than David Hernandez? If anyone needs to go down, it’s Jason Berken.

Seems to me, the move to make was none right now – give Izzy some more time off and deal with the roster move when you absolutely must.

Or maybe this is the message to Jason Berken – get your stuff together tonight, or you’re back in Norfolk and David will come back up. And stay.

Berken and Hernandez can bounce around

I’m not too up in arms there.

I’m really curious to see if the Pie experiment is going to end. I’ll be surprised if MacPhail gives up on him. Salazar has been hitting when called on, but at 31 you wonder how long he’ll be around. It will be interesting.

At this point, Pie stays at least through the year

With the roster as it is, he’s the only backup CF we have. Seriously, if Adam Jones was to get hurt or need a day off in the next 80 games, who plays if not Pie? Pie? Salazar? Heaven forbid!

I'd guess they'd put Nick or Nolan in CF for a game.

Or if it’s something serious call up Gathright from Norfolk.

Yuck

I mean, if Adam’s hurt, sure call up Gathwright if he goes on the DL. But a day off and put Nick or Nolan in CF? Shudder the thought…

I'm in favor of keeping Pie

and letting Salazar go since we’ve got Mora, Wiggy, Huff, and Scott that can all do pretty much the same thing he does.

From the Anita Marks show...

She’s reading her IM from Roch…

David Hernandez comes back to start for the O’s July 20, when the require a 5th starter. .

Guthrie has a BAD virus, will not pitch Sunday, Rich Hill makes the start Saturday, Bergesen now moves to Sunday, back on his normal rest, iirc. Wonder if that means Wieters sits Saturday night to catch Bergesen Sunday, or if he still sits on Sunday.

It could be worse.

At least it’s not an Adam Eaton start.

Or Bruce Chen

I cannot believe he is still gainfully employed in the American League.

I was at one of them this season

Ive also already endured a Hill start. It costs me somewhere around 200 bucks everytime I go and see a game. Damn my luck.
