Best Games of the First Half
In this supposed 'rebuilding' year for the O's, there have been a handful of thrilling games with spectacular performances from the young guys and veterans. While their record was 40-48 at the All-Star break, the majority of fans agree that this team is on the right track. Here is a list of the 5 most memorable games from the first half.
Opening Day, April 6th. Orioles 10 vs. Yankees 5.
The Orioles kicked their season off on the right foot by beating the Yankees and their prized off season acquisitions. Mark Teixiera was properly greeted by tens of thousands boos hollered by bitter O's fans. C.C. Sabathia allowed six runs as Roberts, Jones, and Markakis combined for 8 hits and 7 runs between the three of them. This game was more than just a win but rather a benchmark for where this team was and still is fostering hope for the future.
Reimold's Heroics, May 27th. Orioles 12 vs. Blue Jays 10 in 11 innings.
Nothing was in the Orioles favor for this game. For one, it was a day game, they were facing the American League's best pitcher at the time in Roy Halladay, and it was the final game of a series in which they won the first two games. Despite all of those pieces in the Blue Jays favor, Orioles Magic returned to Birdland. Halladay was bumped from the game after 7 solid innings and the O's had there chance. The Orioles were down by 5 runs entering the 8th but battled back with a merry-go-round of hits to tie the ballgame. In the top of the 12th however, Danys Baez gave up a two run homer to Aaron Hill to break up the tie. In the bottom half of the inning, the rookie Nolan Reimold stepped to the plate playing in just his 13th career major league ballgame. With the score 10-9 and two runners on base, the rookie jacked the 1-1 pitch over the left field fence, game over, O's win 12-10!
Wieter's Debut, May 29th. Orioles 7 vs. Tigers 2.
This potentially historic game drew national attention as the #1 prospect in baseball was called up. However, Matt Wieters' debut in front of a packed house at the Yard was overshadowed by Luke Scott's two home run performance and Bergesen's gem. Luke's grand slam onto the flag court and Brad Bergesen's 8 strong innings helped the O's win their 7th game in 8 days.
Roberts Silences Citizens Bank Park, June 20th. Orioles 6 @ Phillies 5.
In the midst of interleague play, the Orioles stunned 40,000 Phillies fans at Citizens Bank Park by taking the lead after trailing by two entering the top of the ninth. After a Ryan Howard bomb off Danys Baez in the 7th to give the Phils a two-run lead, the O's used a Gregg Zaun solo shot and a Brian Roberts two out, two strike, two-run home run to overcome the Phils. The Orioles went on to sweep the World Champions the following day.
Historic Comeback, June 30th. Orioles 11 vs. Red Sox 10.
What really is there to say about this one? Wow! Everyone who was at or watched this historic game was speechless. This is perhaps the most memorable game of the past decade for the O's. The Birds overcame a nine run deficit, yes a NINE RUN deficit, to beat the first place Red Sox. With five runs in the 7th and five more in the 8th, the Orioles set a franchise record for largest comeback in team history. This win is a testament to the team's heart and persistence regardless of the situation, the two qualities winning teams must have in order to succeed. Unfortunately, Orioles fans will always remember the 4-run lead the Orioles blew in the 9th the following day. That's baseball.
Honorable Mentions
Battle of the Beltways part 1, May 22 @ Nationals. 4-2 in 12 innings.
The Orioles kicked off their interleague schedule by taking a trip down 95 to play in the 'Battle of the Beltways' versus the Nats. This was a very well played game by both teams and it took a fluke play to split the 2-2 tie. In the top of the 12th, Danys Baez was forced to hit because the O's ran out of bench players. He swung at the second pitch he saw and the ball dribbled down the left field line as Baez reached first safely to keep the inning alive. Roberts and Jones followed with consecutive doubles as Baez scored what ended up being the game winning run. Take that, 12-29 Nats!
K-Rod's Collapse, June 18 vs. Mets. 5-4.
Trailing 4-3 entering the bottom of the 9th, the O's were in line to add another loss to their 0-34 record when trailing after 8 innings. With arguably the best closer in the majors on the mound primed to record another save, the Orioles stood no chance right? Nope, the O's defied the odds and scored two runs of Francisco Rodriguez, aided by a game winning single by Aubrey Huff, to win the series against the Mets.

I voted for the Red Sox game due to its historic significance, but I was at the Phillies game when Roberts hit that HR and that was incredible! My voice took half the week to return. Sitting in home run alley at “The Bank” and listening to thousands of Philly fans go deathly silent while my O’s fans and I celebrated at a fevered pitch was one of the true highlights of the season!
I was there too!
I’m the only one who voted for that Phillies game when Roberts hit the go-ahead home run in the ninth. It was an incredible experience to hear the entire Phillies fanbase go dead silent while on their feet when the ball went out. I couldn’t stop shouting ‘YEEEESSS’ when the O’s took the lead. My friends and I were so excited that we sat in the parking lot after the game listening to Orioles Magic over and over and over again…

I wish I could vote for more than one.
I guess, technically, I can by logging out. Just call me lazy. But anyways, I voted for the 9-run deficit PHN defeat. But my other vote(s) would have gone to Nolan’s walk-off, and also B-Rob silencing the city of Philadelphia. I still remember when MASN showed those two women drop their heads as they watched the ball land in the stands. The looks of horror on their faces were priceless. And a very honorable mention to the Future’s first game, because that was the most excited I’d been about a single baseball game in a very long time. And all the national attention it was receiving just made me happy to see we were finally being noticed. Plus, can’t argue with Luuuuuuuke.

What about Matt's first homer!!!
that should be an honorable mention at least!

Gotta go witht he 9 run comeback...
all though it was a bit tainted for me after the 9th inning 4 run lead we blew the next day on Bergy’s gem outting. Although, the umps, as we know, had a big hand in that.
I’m going Opening Day. Yankees at the Yard, but their fans vastly outnumbered for once by O’s fans, and a really exciting Orioles win.
I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.
Me too
The comeback was awesome and historic, but jumping down the MFY throats right out of the gate is BIRDLAND.
Rec’d post.

It's been a fun year so far and I can't wait to see what the second half has in store
For so many of those games up there, I attended the game after. I attended the game after Wieter’s debut, in which he got his first two hits and run. We lost that one though. I attended the next-day collapse against Boston, which I’m still bitter about.
With games I’ve gone to, the two best games were Wieters first home run on Boblehead night and I also really enjoyed the 11-1 win over Washington. It was the first time we scored in, like, two weeks.
I voted for Opening Day.

I voted for the epic Boston comeback
I will join the few who have mentioned that Wieters first home run and a comeback win on bobblehead night was a big one that possibly should’ve made the list.
oh yeah!

This was an easy one
and it looked like I voted the same way most others did. I did love beating Frankie in the bottom of the ninth. Even though I like to watch K-Rod pitch, he rubs me the wrong way.

I voted the Phillies game
only because my best friend is a Phillies fan. I also attended the game before and after that one. Both were wins as well, but not like that…
Matt Wieters can get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop in under one lick.
I voted Reimold's walk-off 3 run HR...
…defiantly a memorable one. When I was watching this game my MLB.TV went off a few batters before Reimold came up, and me being ever so optimistic was telling myself ‘I gonna miss the rookie Reimold hit a walk-off 3-run HR!’…and when I finally got it to work again (like 15 min. later) that was exactly what happened…and I missed it (I went back and watched it later though). This was a big moment.
-so was the 9-run comeback though : )
The team has shown
a lot of heart in the first half. This year I really think the second half could be fun as well, considering the youth of the team and the fact that we still have quality arms to throw into the mix.
I am hoping that the bullpen can stay somewhat in tact, although there will be some tough decisions to make down the stretch run. Will Sarfate be effective? Where will Koji and Chris Ray fit in when they return? Who (if anyone) gets traded? This could end up being really fun to watch or eerily painful to endure.
Opening Day -
Anytime you can beat the yankees on opening day, punch their latest mega-million dollar pitcher ‘s ticket , get to boo Mark Teixiera (piece of crap) and say scoreboard to all the yankees fans in your section and at work – IT’S GOTTA BE THE BEST GAME!!! – so far.

agreed
opening day was a win in all meanings of the word. it would have been better we coulda opened up the new yankee stadium with that kinda defeat, but whatevs. we got to boo teixiera for perpetuating the most ridiculous cycle in baseball (the "i want to play for a contender so i sign with the red sox or yankees). no wonder nobody else contends. the MLB talent pool is so watered down by two teams. i hope that we can win with our young guys so that they arent compelled to follow suit for the big bucks

I went with Wieters' debut
because that’s the day the Future started to become Now.
And I’ve been waiting 11 years for this organization to compete. That’s the day, it can be argued, we started to compete.

That's also the game I went with
If was the day that future became now, but it was also the most awesome day. With LUUUUKE’s home runs and the rainbow and the fact that it was a packed house based solely on the fact that so many people recognized Matt Wieters’ importance. It was a vision of the future when the ballpark will be packed all the time. That picture zk took of the rainbow has been the background on my computer since then. It makes me so happy to see every seat taken and most of them orange.
