Orioles 4, Blue Jays 3, 12 innings: Melmo redeems himself
The Orioles, doing their best to end the first half with happy feelings, found help from the most unexpected place late Saturday night. While most people were watching UFC, having a social life, I was watching the game, half doped out from wisdom teeth. The weather has been absolutely gorgeous in Maryland this week, and the predicted thunderstorms never materialized.
Tonight's pitching matchup was supposed to be Ricky Romero against Brad Bergesen, two early ROY candidates. But with Jeremy Guthrie taking the start off tomorrow, Rich Hill got the call. Both starters did their jobs, Romero being more impressive with a 8 inning quality start. Rich Hill left the game with a chance to win in the 7th, allowing two runs.
Wieters got an RBI double in the second after the ball got away from a sliding Vernon Wells. Luke Scott, who had a web gem by robbing a home run in left in the second inning, added another run for the Orioles with a monster shot in the 4th. Currently undetermined if it hit Eutaw St. or not. Toronto tied it up in the 5th, only to have Markakis and Huff get the lead right back in the 6th with consecutive doubles. Jim Johnson allowed the tying run to score in the 8th, but it could have been worse.
The Orioles used up all of their best pitchers "early" in this game that went to 12. We used Baez, Johnson and Sherrill in the 7, 8, and 9 innings. After Bass got out of trouble in the 11th, it was Hendo time in the 12th. It really wasn't that bad this time. There were runners on the corners with two outs, and it wasn't even that nerve wracking. Hendo looked alright out there, is what I'm saying. Melvin Mora blocked a ball and got it to first for the final out. It's not all the time you feel thankful to have Mora on the team.
The bottom of the 12th started with Luke Scott striking out. He was really upset with himself. Melvin Mora then hit a home run to right-center, for a walkoff Orioles win. Yes, Melvin Mora. He of the .681 OBP. It was his first homerun since May 7, a span of 50 games. So what do you know? Is he just getting ready for another scorching hot August? The team, how are they going to do on their long road trip after the break? The annual collapse, will it happen? Is the bullpen going to hold up?
There's a game tomorrow, it will be the last game in Baltimore until July 27.

Weird
Someone else was writing a postgame at two in the morning.
You beat me, so I won’t post mine; thanks for the help, though.

The annual collapse, will it happen?
I am going to go with yes, but a milder one…the Orioles run diff is 4th worst in MLB, so that’s not exactly an encouraging sign.

Why do people think this?
We’re no better than in previous years. In fact, we usually have at least one of the offense/pitching clicking, and for most of 2009 neither has done much of anything.

no...
the offensive was crazy at the beginning of the year w/ roberts, jones and markakis, then they cooled and luke scott and reimold went bananas. there have also been pretty soloid runs of good starts and bullpen heroics.

Why do I think what?
I’m a little unclear as to your question. It’s very true that the Orioles should expect better things from Guthrie, Markakis, Huff and Roberts, but it’s also an open question if certain guys are as capable as their first halves indicate (Scott, Bergeson, Jones).
I’d like to think the young pitching will come up to make the team respectable, but I don’t believe MacPhail will ignore their innings count and start their arbitration clock. I think we’re going to have Hill and Berken in the rotation for a long time and that’s going to make for a 90 loss team.

I think it could be possible we become better second half.
With guys like Tillman likely to come up, and lots of second half hitters…
Of course, it’s also very possible our annual suck fest occurs and we bow our heads in shame. Who knows. Only the future will tell.

All is right with Birdland. Epitome MBP is leading the vote.
It really wasn’t that bad this time
I don’t get this statement. Hendo has made a nice home for himself out in the pen. When it’s late in the game and I see him warming up I don’t shit my pants like I used to when I saw his name coming up in the rotation.

The olde wisdom teeth extraction....
at least you were half doped up in case the game ended like so many of them have this year. (should have been Full Doped Up) I hope they gave you the good stuff and not that Tylenol Three crap – that’s like eating Pez.

Congrats Melmo However
Today is a new day and the future 3rd base job must be addressed by the birds in the offseason. Waring is still in Fredrick and may not be called to Bowie after the break. Mike Constanzo has showing a good glove but is hitting .212. He is not the answer. There is no one in Norfolk. Do we go after a FA or trade some pitching to get a guy we can pencil in the next 3 or 4 years?

Sweeeet
I almost voted for Luke, because him taking away that home run was freaking awesome — and turned out to be a pretty crucial play — but you can’t really argue with game-winning home runs.
I was at this game, and right before Luke came up to bad to start the final inning, they played this video of him with his bat replaced with a lightsaber hitting home runs, and with Star Wars clips interspersed. So we were all pumped when Luke stepped up to the plate… then he stuck out on 4 pitches… aaaaand then Melvin smacked it out of the park.
Another highlight of this game was when they played Hybrid Moments by the Misfits during the blooper reel. I love that song.

I was there till the end
When Luke Scott struck out, me and my friend were like ‘oh boy that brings up…..Melvin Mora’, and then he goes and hits that home run. I guess he needed to get home and put his kids to bed, so he decided to end the game.
And yeah, I saw that Luke Scott/Star Wars thing….pretty good. I was in the 2nd to last row in the upper reserve behind home plate…section 334..we had a drunk Red Sox fan who kept chanting ‘USA’ whenever they would get the ’Let’s Go O’s’ chant going (I guess since we were playing a Canadian team?). He also liked to cheer for Kevin Millar (sp?) at random times during the game. He was more funny than anything – when I first saw (and heard) him, I thought me and my friend were in for a long night…..

Ha!
I was in section 47, third base side but close to home plate, and I could hear that “USA” chanter… definitely could have been way more annoying than it actually was.

Yeah
He was with a bunch of college kids, the rest were all wearing Baltimore stuff. His own group was ignoring him. He kept trying to sit by the girls and they kept moving and getting the guys to sit next to him. It was pretty hilarious.

Hey
I was section 46! Well, I was section 68 but some girls gave us their tickets and we decided to use theirs for the 2nd half of the game. I herad the USA thing too.

“some girls” gave you their tickets? How’d that happen?

My buddy and I were at Pickles pregame
just drinking andd having a good time. A couple girls came up to us and said some creepy old dude gave them 2 tickets next to his seats and said he’d like to “see them later”. They were 21. We already had tickets, but we figured what the hell, ya dont get handed $110 worth of tickets every day. So we spent 6 innings by LUUUUKE and the last 5 innings behind home plate.

Red Sox fans who go to Orioles fan when the Sox aren't playing
Are a hoot. They’re more baseball fans than anything. I had a Sox fan in my section a month ago against the Twins, he was rooting for the losing team the whole game, because he was “rooting for a good game of baseball, hopefully 18 innings”

I just gotta say
i’m 2-0 at Rich Hill starts, as is my Phillies fan friend. He may have to be taken to every Hill start from now on, ven if its against his will. THE GREATER GOOD.
