Deadspin takes a shot at OPACY

Deadspin has started a new weekly feature called Why Your Stadium Sucks.  This week's column focuses on our beloved OPACY

You should head over to the site to check out the article.  Previous versions of this column have focused on stadiums that actually do suck.  Admittedly, I'm biased, but the arguments against OPACY are political and historical, and those might not be great arguments anyway.  The only complaints about the stadium itself?  No tailgating allowed, no seat switching allowed, there are a lot of Red Sox fans.

I thought is was funny that this piece showed up shortly after zknower's post about stadiums.

Thoughts?

What a truly

worthless article that was. No real valid points as to why OPACY sucks, just someone ranting and raving about something they have little knowledge of.

Did you read the part about how B-more supposedly did not need a new stadium?? Memorial Stadium, as great as the history of that place was, was a crumbling shit-hole desperately in need of retirement. I really can’t think of how the city could have done better than Camden Yards.

Maybe I should write a column titled “Why your blog sucks: Deadspin”. That way I could spout off about shit that I don’t know anything about also.

Just FYI

They’re doing all 30 stadiums, it’s part of a series.

If you can't laugh at yourself...

Go back and read the other stadiums they’ve skewered in the series. We get off pretty easily (as well we should). I appreciated the fact that the fan-submitted comments that were used in the post itself were more quirky stuff instead of horror stories.

Awful article.

I know they need to cover every stadium, but at least get your facts straight.

Lopping off the north end of the warehouse? That didn’t happen, it’s still 1016 feet long or whatever the exact length is/was. No longer in neighborhoods? The author has apparently never been to Camden Yards – there are neighborhoods on the East & West sides of it, and the argument could be made you don’t have to go that far north to be in another. And how in the hell was it expensive? It cost somewhere around $125M to build – the Nats have the bargain of the most recent slew of new stadiums & theirs cost 5X that amount.

There are reasons to dislike the stadium without making things up.

I think you get the best value at OPaCY than anywhere else

You can bring in your own food.
You can bring in your own soda/water (which means you can mix your own liquor)
You can drink in the parking lots even if tailgating is not allowed
By the 4th inning in weekday games, you can easily move down to the best seats in the house
If you ask nicely, you can get great parking for only $10

The Red Sox fans? eh, the team gets their money.

Dude, I have to tip my cap to you. Never once did I think of sneaking in my own rum & cokes into the game, even though it should be perfectly obvious.

I do have a flask, but I’ve always decided against trying to sneak it into sporting events, since it was an expensive engraved anniversary gift that I don’t want to risk being confiscated.

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

i agree that oakland coliseum sucks

but this article sucks. minus the usher part. the OPACY ushers wouldnt let me move down after the third of three long rain delays during a game a few years ago. there were max 5000 ppl left in the park and almost nobody behind homeplate/the dugouts. they still wouldnt let me come down past the rows right up next to the concourse. those bastards

You have to know how to do it

This is a funny article.

How can you not see the humour in this?

No doubt

I submitted to this, and got a chunk of my reasons added to the article. But, yeah, it’s supposed to be funny. So lighten up a bit. Everyone’s home field getting their balls broken.

Taking Deadspin seriously?

Seriously? They’re about as serious as a bunch of drunk frat boys…oh wait…

I scratched my head at the "lopping off the north end of the Warehouse"

That never happened. Not to my knowledge and that would have been moderately big news for the papers, if only to get in a bunch of pictures.

haha. he found a dog.

That’s great. I was once in my seat in section 45 or thereabouts and was actually panhandled by a homeless guy. That pretty much sucked.

OPACY Sucks

There’s one legitimate reason why OPACY sucks: The Hilton that eliminates the view of the Bromo-Seltzer Tower.

Actually, there may be another that I’ve been wondering about (and really should know the answer to): Do they sell crab cakes at OPACY? I mean, I find it impossible to believe that you can’t get a crab cake at freakin’ OPACY, but I’ve certainly never had one there, nor noticed a spot to buy one. It’s not like I’d expect them to be the highest quality that we’ve come to expect in Baltimore, but still, it’s BALTIMORE; we should probably be inundated with crab cakes and have to go out of our way to buy hot dogs (with all due respect to Esskay). But if I am wrong about this, let me know, because like I said, I’ve been wondering about this for a bit now.

Oh, and I understand why, but the lack of Natty Boh at OPACY is tragic.

There is a place to get crabcakes

It’s on the lower level, sort of in the center. I’ve never gotten them, though. I don’t trust seafood at the ballpark.

There is also a place

on the club level to get them…something with Bistro in the name. Get ready to shell out the loot though.

by sickuvitall on Jul 14, 2009 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I used to get to sit in one of the suites about once a year, when my dad got his company’s tickets. I had the crabcakes, and they were good. I assume they’re the same ones that you can buy on the club level, at least.

(I say all this with the caveat that I may not be the best judge of crabcakes, so they might have been merely “not horrible”).

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

I bought the crabcakes the last time I was at OPACY. I thought they were delic. I miss Old Bay living on the west coast.

heck you dont even a kid to have a diaper bag

its very effective. they didnt even look even tho it was about 3 times as heavy as normal diaper bag (probably from the two sixers contained within)

hopefully o’s stadium staff does not read this blog

by twistedlogic on Jul 15, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh yes!

I totally agree about the kid at games thing! When I was at a Phils game earlier with no outside food allowed, I brought a cooler, the guy didn’t even search it, he just asked whats in it…when I said ohh baby stuff is there he just waved me through…Meanwhile they searched everyone elses stuff thoroughly! I did the same at Nova games at the FU(ok Wachovia) Center wher they let you bring nothing in! Thats how I save $$$$ so we can go to more events…So i agree, having a kid at games(or anywhere else that restricts food) is awesome! I do it all the time too at the theme parks! They never check when you have kids!(except Dutch wonderland, but thats a kids park..) Anyway, in terms of the article, we could buid at private money a palace of a baseball stadium that lets you tailgate, food, etc and cheap tickets and they’d find something wrong, I take what they say with a grain of salt!

hell yeah if it saves $$$

I don’t rally have to now since my one boys potty trained, but i had no qualms at all carrying a “man” diaper bag everywhere to save $$$. I always loaded it with water, snacks, etc!
