O's making a run for the playoff's?

My dad and i got into a discussion the other day about how long we think it will be until the orioles make a strong run for the play offs. Not a slight run but a legit run for the playoffs? I say if they can bring some of these rookie pitchers up this year; it could be next year but my dad said two years from now. Leave some comments and let m know what you think!!!

Playoffs????????????

The Orioles haven’t had a winning season since ‘97, I don’t think. I think a winning season is a reasonable goal THIS YEAR, but actually achieveable next year. Playoffs in 2011. By then, they should have Matusz, Tillman, Arrieta, etc in their starting rotation. Their outfield is good now, will be better next year. Catcher will be stud by then, and Joseph will be backup. Infield is not determined, yet, and IMO is wide open. Snyder may or may not make it. The rest hasn’t developed. (Waring, Davis, Pinckney, Turner, Moore, Florimon, Townsend, etc.) We need some budding infield stars and it needs to include a 1B and 3B who can really rake! To compete in the AL East, we need a stud at 1B and a 3B who can hit and field.

Well, if the Yankees, Red Sox, Rays, and Jays are all involved in a horrible train wreck

then maybe we have a chanve.

Too soon.

definitely.

Look Mr. James, I lived near the Chesapeake Bay for the first 21 years of my life, at times as close as a 5 minute walk. I know about crabs. And let me tell you something about crabs: they travel every time they get in the lane.

Yankees

First of all they are done!!!! There done. They can’t buy a 9 man roster. They are getting old and arn’t producing in the farm system like they used to. Now i know the yankees will always be in the picture but i think we will be better. Toronto we can beat as well as the rays. Are farm system is one of the best in baseball.

*Our* farm system is one of the best

but that doesn’t excuse you from spelling mistakes lol jk
But we can’t rely solely on the farm system. We need to bring in some veteran help for our bullpen (veteran, not old men) and we need to figure out solutions for 1B, SS, and 3B. I don’t see us making it to the playoffs before 2011, and only then if we can bring in some proven players. I love our young guys, but they can’t do it alone, as evidenced by our 40-48 record.

2011 is the target date. Our top pitching prospects will have to develop as expected w/o injury. And we’ll need at least one above average bat at either 1B or 3B.

Agree

I would also give it two years. Best hopes is that arrieta and tillman and either matuz comes up this year and gets some experience and hopefully we can go from there.

off-topic

On XM radio, Jim Duquette said the O’s passed on Tim Lincecum because of his size and mechanics. Not really surprising, but interesting little tidbit.

A lot of teams passed on Lincecum

Supposedly the M’s were taking a close look at him, but drafted Morrow instead….

And a lot of teams passed on him for the exact same reason as the O’s.

Which I still

think will be his downfall before long. But hey, at least we would have gotten something out of that pick (cough cough rowell cough cough).

Yeah, I was thinking that his delivery/size will eventually catch up with him but I think he’ll be fine for his pre-free agency years.

I remember BA

intimating that the Orioles were all about Billy Rowell weeks before draft day.

Lincecum has local ties to Seattle, so the M’s passing on him and Morrow’s inconsistency especially hurts. Hindsight is always 20/20 but it really sucks that Rowell can’t even get out of A ball.

Rowell

has continued to regress this year. Even moving to right field hasn’t had a positive effect…I think you can pretty much stick a fork in him despite his youthful advantage.

I think its legit 2 years away

but i’m looking at next year for some, ANY, meaningful games. I voted next year because I think there is a good shot that the O’s can make a worst to first (ok, maybe worst to wild-card area) run ala the Rays. It all depends on how the kids can fare in their 1st full year in the rotation, if Guts can bounce back a bit, and if we pick up a 1st/3rd baseman worthy of a compeing team. I like the pen and think its only gonna get better with the possibility of guys like Koji and Hernandez in there next year, and if we can keep Pie, Wiggs, and Dino on the bench, I like that too. The lineup should be better too. BRob will be another year older, but Nolan, Matt, and AJ will be more experienced. Should be interesting to say the least.

Matt Wieters can get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop in under one lick.

I like what you said

Untill you said keep Pie. The only thing that guy has is speed. We can find an outfielder to take his spot.

by Oriolebird88 on Jul 13, 2009 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

Im guessing you were responding to what I said

So here’s the deal with Pie. You wont get much for him in a trade, so there’s no point in that. As for your comment about him only having speed? He’s a good defender that can play CF well. He still has potential with the bat. He’s young. He doesn’t cost much. He doesnt bitch about playing time. And yea, he has speed. You may be able to find a player to take his spot, but why? A move for the sake of making a move? Pie is a perfectly fine 4th outfielder. If we had someone else that could play CF, i’d say drop him for the extra roster spot, but Luke (as an alternate outfielder) cant cover CF, and Nick or Nolan shouldnt be out there either. Pie is a nice 4th OF and, with any luck, may just show something when he gets some playing time and either become a trade piece or a bigger part of this team.

Pie trade?

IF they could get either a 1B or a 3B with a power upside that is blocked on their team, I would trade Pie in a minute. Either Joey Gathright or Fiorino (sp?) from Norfolk could replace him as 4th OF who can play CF. There was talk of Josh Fields from the White Sox. That’s ok with me. Fields won’t get playing time in Chicago anymore now that Beckham is at 3B for them. I say bring him on.

by fuddnelson on Jul 13, 2009 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Josh Fields sucks, dude.

Think of Pie as younger, faster, less shitty and a million times less bitchy Jay Payton and you’ll stop hating him.
