The Best Signings And Trades in Orioles History
THESE ARE IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER!!!!!!
*********************************************************************************************************************************
1. Orioles trade Milt Pappas for Frank Robinson. This deal pretty much was the reason we won '66 and '70. if we don't make that trade who knows how many titles the O's wolud have?
2. Orioles trade Erik Bedard for Adam Jones, Chris Tillman and George Sherrill. Really the best part of this trade is not only the fact we got Tillman and Jones, but the fact that we could get Erik back on our team!
3. Orioles trade Miguel Tejada for Lu(uuuuuuuu)ke Scoot, Matt Albers and Dennis Sarfate. This trade could also go in the worse trades categories. The last season we had Miggy he not hustling and just plain playing bad. So we get rid of him and we get Luke Scott, Sarfate and Albers. And let me tell you when ever we get new arms in our bullpen I'll take it. Let's not forget about Luke Scott, he's the Orioles major power threat right now.

The F. Robby trade is best
Time will tell on the Adam Jones trade, it could come close.
Here’s another good one: Rick Dempsey, Tippy Martinez, Rudy May, Scott MacGregor and Dave Pagan for Doyle Alexander, Jimmy Freemon, Elrod Hendricks, Ken Holtzman, and Grant Jackson.

Here's one
December 4, 1968: Curt Blefary to the Astros for Mike Cuellar. Blefary, the 1965 Rookie of the Year, played one season in Houston (.253/.347/.393, 12 HR, 67 RBI). He was out of the league after 1972. Cuellar won 23, 24, and 20 games in his first three years as an Oriole and had 143 wins in a Baltimore uniform.
I also love some of the lesser trades that no one ever thinks of, like Chris Fussell to the Royals for Jeff Conine. I can’t believe KC was dumb enough to let Conine go twice. Getting Chris Hoiles in a package from the Tigers for washed-up Fred Lynn was a nice move, too.

Frank Robinson is obviously number one
The second might be a big deal someday.
The third wouldn’t be in the top 20 of all time.

In fact
The third one isn’t even better than the initial signing of Miguel Tejada, which was a great move despite the fact that everybody hates him for some reason.

Steroids and lying about your age tend to do that.
The timing of the Tejada trade couldn’t have been better, really.

He was disliked well before that
Although I think those are stupid reasons since lots of other players get a free pass for similar offenses.

Other Great Oriole Moves
Don Buford, Bruce Howard, and Roger Nelson for Luis Aparicio, John Matias and Russ Snyder.
Ken Singleton and Mike Torrez for Bill Kirkpatrick, Rich Coggins and Dave McNally, which was probably the biggest fleecing the Orioles have ever pulled off.
Brady Anderson and Curt Schilling for Mike Boddicker (which should’ve been a fleecing, except they traded Curt Schilling for Glenn Davis).
Signing Mickey Tettleton after the A’s released him (trading him later was among the worst moves they ever made).
Signing Raphael Palmeiro (the first time) and Roberto Alomar
Jim Gentile for Willy Miranda, Bill Lajoie, and $50,000.
Bobby Bonilla and Jimmy Williams for Damon Buford and Alex Ochoa.
Possibly more to come.

Erik Bedard and Returning to the O's
I was thinking about it the other day, and if Erik Bedard returns to the O’s next year, the the rotation will look something like this:
Bedard
Bergesen
Tillman
Guthrie
Uehara/Hernandez
That’s a rotation right there if Bedard stays healthy, which admittedly is a large if. Still, the absence of the emergence of Arrieta and Matusz as part of the rotation to start the 2010 season, I’d be extremely happy with a rotation along those lines.

Has he indicated an interest to return . . .
or is this more wishful thinking along the Mark Texeira hometown discount?
It seemed like he wanted out pretty badly.

I remember reading something
to the effect of him sayin that he really remembers his time with the O’s fondly. It sounded like a coded message that he’d like to return, but that all depends on who’s listening.

I thought that
McPhail didn’t dish out big money for pitchers (he develops the arms), right? I would assume Bedard is only going to come back for big money. Or am I just being negative because of d-bags like Texiera?
by Johnny_S on Jul 14, 2009 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yep
breed the arms, buy the bats. All I was saying is that Bedard sounded like he’d like to come back. Not saying he will. Then again, they are all about protecting the young guys. Maybe they dont want a Tillman/Arrieta type going up against the Hallidays, Greinkes, Sabathias, and Becketts of the world, but also dont want Guts or Berg heading a staff when they are actually trying to track down a playoff berth. Who knows. We’ll see.

How could the Tejada trade be in the "worst" catagory?
Because we could use a hitting SS? Tejada got outted about roids the day after we traded him. Then he got older without having a birthday. Luke is crushing, Patton is another potential solid starter, plus Sarfate and Albers. Who exactly would put that in the “worst trades” catagory?
Also, dont forget Kam Mickolio In the Beard trade, who could possibly end up being a closer/set-up type. Not exactly organizational filler.

Factoring in what they are being paid
Scott alone sends the Tejada deal in the O’s favor.

THE TRADE WE MISSED!!!!!
One of the biggest trades we missed was back when brady hit 50 homeruns, the yankees wanted Brady Anderson for Bernie Williams and yea i don’t blame the orioles for keeping him when it hit the 50+ homeruns but it would of been nice to have Bernie Williams.
by Oriolebird88 on Jul 15, 2009 2:01 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think Bernie would have a free agent shortly after the proposed trade. I don’t think he would have remained an Oriole for long.

Trade we missed
The deal that was being worked out the winter of ‘08 with the Cubbies that featured Rich Hill, Ronnie Cedeno, and Felix Pie for Roberts was a bullet dodged. If I remember correctly, it was the Cubs’ reluctance to throw in Rich Hill that kept the deal from going down.
