I'm hearing some rumblings that the Orioles just traded Oscar Salazar to the San Diego Padres.

I don't have confirmation at this point, or what the Orioles would receive in return, but I'm working on it.

UPDATE:
The Orioles acquired reliever Cla Meredith from the Padres for Oscar Salazar.

Meredith is 4-2 with a 4.17 ERA, 13 walks and 20 strikeouts in 36 2/3 innings.

Meredith, 26, is a submarine-stylist who was described by Andy MacPhail, president of baseball operations, as a "poor man’s Chad Bradford."

"He gets a lot of ground balls and can pitch every other day," MacPhail said. "The ground ball ratio becomes more important later in the summer in our ballpark."

MacPhail also wanted to give the bullpen a different look, figuring most of the current relievers were too similar.

Meredith has an option remaining, but the Orioles aren’t expected to use it. My guess is Kam Mickolio gets sent down tomorrow to make room for David Hernandez.

A Done Deal - Roch Kubatko

With David Hernandez coming up to pitch tomorrow a move had to be made. Guess we'll have to stay tuned on the return.

that it’ll be someone on the 25 man roster since I thought it was to make room for David Hernandez.

I’ll be able to pass along more details later tonight, but obviously, another move would have to be made for David Hernandez to fit onto the roster tomorrow.

I guess the timing of this move was just a coincidence, no idea what the move to bring up hernandez is then.

Well I was a pitcher too.

But I got 3 pinch hit ABs that summer and one of them was against him. He walked me (obviously scared of my power – joke), but the one pitch I swung at was around 88 mph and moved about a foot away from me (I bat left handed). It was nasty.

Is this a precursor to another trade?

Does this trade mean Kam will be sent down or Sherrill and/or Baez are on their way? Based on reports It seem like Sherrill or Baez could be traded within the week.

Meredith is a solid middle and set up reliever with a few years left on his contract and one option left, so I couldn’t be happier with this move.

by Dr Orpheus on Jul 19, 2009 8:31 PM EDT reply actions

Or maybe we could turn around and flip Cla for something?

I would think that he’s worth more than an Oscar Salazar (as much as I like the guy he’s really a fringe major leaguer) to a lot of teams in contention. A guy that can come in and get ground balls consistently late in games is pretty damn valuable. He had a pretty long scoreless appearance/inning streak last year or the year before.

by O'sFan21 on Jul 19, 2009 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I wish Oscar Salazar well

He deserved better than what he received in Baltimore. Nothing against the O’s. We had no room for his bat here. The Padres need him and I hope to hear from him in the box scores soon.

I am not sure about Meredith but if he has an option and does not have a top level salary the works for us. I am suprised the Pirates were not looking at Salazar also now that they are shoping Sanchez and others.

I like it

I agree with AM that we could stand to shake up our bullpen. I liked Chad Bradford, and I’m glad we’ve got a submarine pitcher again.

Best of luck to Salazar — it’s true, we didn’t have room for him and he deserves better than pitch-hitting like once a week.

It's be interesting....

his K/BB is bad, and we know walks hurt us! His 1.61 WHIP isn’t great.

Also, judging from baseball-reference, he’s gotten worse every year he’s played, from a stellar 2006 (1.07 ERA / 0.7 WHIP / 50 IP) to just a decent 2008 (4.09 / 1.46 / 70IP)

Novelty pitcher

A submarine pitcher is a novelty pitcher. Thats why his ERA has gone up every year. The first time around, people are not used to seeing the ball come from that angle, and have a tough time picking it up. But over time, when divisional opponents see his delivery 10-15 times a year, they start to pick it up, and hit it better. That is why it is just as good of a move for Meredith as anyone. A change in leagues should suit him well. The only problem would be if he is too similar to Bradford, who has been in the AL East for several years now. I am not as familiar with his repitoire and delivery, but hopefully he brings something different, so we can get a year or two of quality relief (which every team needs) in return for a player that we had no use for.

by tflach2 on Jul 20, 2009 11:05 AM EDT reply actions

MacPhail

Here is what MacPhail had to say about Meredith:

“He gets a lot of ground balls, he will be new to our league and that could be beneficial…”

Reading between the lines, he seems to be thinking what you are saying. It seems he is hoping his delivery will be sufficiently novel in the AL East. Hopefully that will be the case.

by rebop on Jul 20, 2009 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Have you seen him pitch?

He is most definitely not a novelty pitcher. He is a sidearmed pitcher who throws much harder than Bradford does. He’s not trying to trick anybody – he attacks them with hard (for a sidearmed pitcher) sinking fastballs.

by O'sFan21 on Jul 20, 2009 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Novelty is a good thing

I am not questioning that the man has good stuff. I am just saying that when you add good stuff to the “novelty” of a unique arm angle, it equals a lower ERA. Simply looking at his stats, he is a 3.75 – 4.25 ERA relief pitcher over the long haul. That is good; not great, but good. I’m saying that hopefully, if you introduce him to hitters that are not used to his arm angle, we can get a year or so like he had in ’06, where his ERA was around 1.00. Hideo Nomo had great stuff, but he was also a novelty pitcher. When he first came over, no one could touch him because of his quirky delivery. With familiarity, he was still a good major league pitcher, but he was not able to duplicate that dominance (except for that one game against the Orioles which we will never again mention).

by tflach2 on Jul 20, 2009 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I think ERA is not the best way to assess a relief pitcher (or any pitcher). If you look at his stats he’s only given up 1 HR this year, but his average against his much higher than past years, which would seem to me to indicate that his batting average against on balls put in play is much higher than usual. That tends to indicate that he’s getting unlucky, so maybe that number will fall back down and he’ll be fine again.

by O'sFan21 on Jul 20, 2009 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Since 2006 his ERA, WHIP, K/9, K/BB, and BB/9 have all gotten worse each year. And BAA against has decreased once (a statistically insignificant drop from .296 in ’07 to .290 in ’08), but even that is up in ’09. No matter how you look at it, his production has been in a steady decline since his stellar rookie campaign in ’06. Luck does not explain three years of diminishing returns. It is better for us if he is a decent reliever who overacheived due to the novelty of his delivery, than if he is a reliever that for some other unknown reason is getting progressively less effective each year. That way he can be really good for us for a while, and decent later; as opposed to decent for a while, and really bad later.

by tflach2 on Jul 20, 2009 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

If his BAA against was statistically insignificant

Then I would argue that his K/9 changes until this year was statistically insignificant as well.

Given that his BAA was .296 and .290 each of the last two full seasons and is now .324, even though he’s only given up 1 HR, I would argue that’s not at all statistically insignificant and that he is getting unlucky on balls put in play. Given that he’s got a lower slugging percentage against this year and a higher batting average against this year as well as a higher BAbip I would argue that he’s getting unlucky.

You’re right that he’s walking more and k-ing less, which is obviously never good, but this is the first season where his k/9 has gone down (not sure what you mean about getting worse each year since – 6.6, 6.7, 6.3 the last 3 years). I think what very well could be happening is that he’s getting a lot more unlucky than usual and so trying to be more fine which is resulting in more walks.

by O'sFan21 on Jul 20, 2009 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I checked out his delivery

its LOW. Not lower than Bradford, as that’d be in the ground, but almost as low.
