I can't take it anymore. I just can't.

Can the posts and videos about the Ravens just please STOP! I am a fan of football, but not of the Ravens, if i want to know whats going on with the Eagles, I check their blog. Is there some misconception I am missing? Is it assumed that every O's fan is a Ravens fan? I am not trying to be mean, but it's taken it's toll on me. I don't want to be told I am not cheering like a Ravens fan at an O's game, or even want to. Baseball is baseball and football is football, and isn't this an ORIOLES blog? I feel so much better now.

FanPosts are user-created content and do not necessarily reflect the views of the editors of Camden Chat or SB Nation. They might, though.

I agree, go Giants!!!

But yes, I come here for Orioles, and O’s only (plus whichever team they play on the given day). And, I can’t forgive the Ravens for beating my team in a Super Bowl. NOT COOL!! :-)

The GEEEEEEEEE-MEN

The Ravens are my 2nd favorite team (2000 was tough for me), but I get the sentiment. However, if people wanna mention football, i’m cool with it. It shouldnt be the main topic, but we talk about things that dont even have anything to do with sports, so i’m quite fine with the Raven’s talk. We all need our vices to get through the season.

Here's the thing guys

Yes, this is an Orioles blog, but we’re also a community and we do talk about other things. Sometimes football, sometimes music (although I usually can’t participate in those discussions because not many people on this blog like Britney Spears), sometimes a million other things.

I don’t think the blog comparing the baseball crowd to the football crowd was inappropriate at all. You can disagree with him all you want, but he was just expressing his opinion. I’ve said something to him about the videos so let’s all just drop it.

In the future, if anyone has a problem with a particular poster or something that has been posted, please don’t make a fan post about it. Please do one of the following:

1) Ignore it. It only takes two seconds to ignore something, and if everyone ignores a certain behavior, it’ll usually go away on its own. But if it can’t be ignored. ..

2) Email me, SC, zknower, or duck. Our emails are at the bottom of the page and we’re here to help :-)

Here's the deal

I am a HUGE Eagles fan – I love the team, but I also realize that this is an Orioles site with mostly fans from the Baltimore area, so there will be a lot of talk about the Ravens (and Redskins) when it comes to football.

Am I annoyed? Not really. It’s what I deal with for cheating on my hometown.

"Take on Me" - a-ha

by exitfare on Jul 21, 2009 6:31 PM EDT reply actions

It annoys me

mainly because I read these comments as “the Orioles suck, time to get excited for a REAL team”. I like the Ravens, but they aren’t really “my team” in the same sense that the O’s are and it sorta seems like Oriolebird88 is rubbing the Ravens in my face and saying “sucker”.

Yes, I realize that this interpretation of events is completely neurotic and I’m reading more into things than are probably actually there, but hey. I wanted to illuminate my point of view and why the posts annoy me. I’m not gonna tell anyone what they can and cannot post, but I also may complain about it.

by PhilR8 on Jul 21, 2009 6:52 PM EDT reply actions

and everyone can feel free to complain/express opinions

Just do so in the thread topic and not in a brandy new fan post.

Everytime

i make a general observation, why is it such a big deal. I’m sorry that I don’t want to keep hearing about the ravens or as an O’s fan be compared to them. I get we talk about things other than baseball, but I can’t ignore when its everywhere. And I come here for the O’s

Because most of them dont require their own fan posts.

And please dont take this too critically. Something like this would be more appropriate on the thread your complaining about (and its not an fair complaint). Being more selective about what warrants its own post improves the quality of the whole site. People can find new content much quicker and related discussions stay confined to one page.

by kba26 on Jul 21, 2009 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not a big deal

I’m just responding. And it’s a little bit of an exaggeration to say it’s everywhere, don’t you think?

And here's one other thing

to maybe make you think about why I responded the way I did.

You want to read about baseball, right? How is this fanpost complaining about someone talking about football any more appropriate than the fanpost that talks about football?

by Stacey on Jul 21, 2009 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I think its awesome you love the O's so much...but...

Im struggling to see where Ravens are “everywhere” on this site. Maybe the mods deleted some of the content, but I check this site pretty regularly and the only Ravens related post I recall recently was comparing Ravens fans to Orioles Fans — which would still be relevant to an Orioles blog.

I love that the O’s bring in outside fans in a way the Ravens don’t. I don’t come across many Ravens fans that are also Yankees fans or Red Sox fans, but I know several Steelers fans that are O’s fans (including my fiance and a one of my closest friends — yes football season can be painful).

So now the truth comes out!!!

Its the eagles fan in you being bothered! Although I think a lot of people here agree, occasional football or other off topic talk is fine (as long as its not politics or religion or something that will get people going) but most the time there are separate blogs for people that all want to talk about separate topics. So go to one of them for that.

I live on the eastern shore, and it’s about equal parts Ravens and Eagles fans. So I have never really minded the Eagles. But it seams that every single Eagles fan I bump into abhors the Ravens. Being an Eagles fan yourself I was wondering if you could explain this to me? They are in two different conferences and only play each other once every four years, so its not like we have a “rivalry”.

While I’m entirely sympathetic to the stifling of any and all Ravens talk, I myself haven’t noticed much of it. Of course, when I do, I accept that as the likeliest of football affiliations for O’s fans, unfortunate though it may be.

It's sort of easy for Baltimore,

Ravens didn’t start until 1996. Lots of people might have had other NFL teams to root for. Sure, with every expansion or city move, many folks from that city start rooting for the new team, but not everyone.

Camden Chat used to

kick serious ass…now to me it is just another blog that is headed in the direction of O’s Hangout. There is too much nonsense on here for me to handle it anymore.

There was a time that nearly EVERY fanpost had something worthy to say. Now finding good content on here is like finding a needle in a haystack…and this thread is a perfect example. I know that everyone is entitled to their opinion, but do we really need entire threads about subjects that just don’t matter?

Furthermore, whatever happened to the art of grammar and spelling. CC used to be full of funny and articulate people. Now I feel like I am in a parade of fourth graders still mastering the English language.

Many of the original regulars are not regulars anymore, and I think it is directly due to the increase in bullshit here at CC. Even our fearless leader rarely makes an appearance on the front lines anymore.

Now that my thoughts have been expressed, I would like to thank each and every person on here who has managed to ruin what was the best Orioles blog on the web. Obviously joining Yahoo or whatever we did was NOT a good move…more is not always better you know.

I think this might be a little melodramatic

The content and commenters are still here. Stacey has been doing an incredible job by basically replacing SC as primary content provider for this site, and everyone who made this place special is still here and still making great contributions.

But when SBNation started supplying content to Brash and Yahoo (or however these deals work), the unwashed masses took notice and began to show up. This can either be seen as a positive or a negative; I personally view it as incredibly positive. This site, and others, is special and really provide community-generated content that rivals anything found anywhere else. Camden Chat did kick serious ass – and when the posts started showing up on Yahoo, people who would otherwise not find this site were able to share in the experiences here.

Camden Chat started as a community of both web- and baseball-savvy folks who actively sought out a community full of like-minded people, but now there is a conduit funneling traffic from a web giant that makes this site much more visible to everyone else. And the fact that there does seem to be an increase in new posters and posts, regardless of their quality, indicates (to me, anyway) that Camden Chat is doing something right.

There is a culture of quality here at Camden Chat that will keep it from devolving into the mess that Orioles Hangout is and always has been. I’m not talking about proper punctuation and grammar here – I’m talking about a community that attracts like-minded individuals and polices itself. Obviously some posters will arrive here, attempt to contribute, and find out that this is not the blog for them. Others will arrive and feel right at home. The point is that to get good users who will “stick”, you gotta sift through those who won’t. I don’t know what sort of ban list this site has, but I assume it’s a small number (based on previous comments by SC et al) and most posters who didn’t fit in have left organically due to the policing of the users. Most people here are incredibly lenient towards infractions that are strictly forbidden on other sites. Some people aren’t going to decipher the feel of the community overnight. Those who feel that this site is worth contributing to – they’ll shape up. Others won’t, and they’ll eventually move on.

I’ve been visiting this blog off and on since 2005 and there are many users here that I respect and whose posts I look forward to reading, and those cherished members have been steadily growing in number. To say that a few rambling posts that contain grammatical errors, or a few users who don’t seem to “get it”, or a few users who don’t seem to understand how to operate the commenting/posting functions properly – to say that these few folks are ruining a once-great site is pure hyperbole. Camden Chat is still a great community that attracts the participation of other excellent O’s bloggers who take the time to post here on top of their own blogging duties (Andrew @ TLC and BaltimoreSportsReport are the only one I can think of off-hand, sorry everyone else).

I’m sorry that a few crappy posts have dampened your enthusiasm about this site, but even if you think the shit is piling a little too high for your tastes, the quality content is worth wading through it. And if you’re searching for a better Orioles community on the internet, I hope you’ll let us know about it when you find it, because I don’t think it exists.

I do that sometimes

mostly for my own benefit, because usually they aren’t written well enough for anyone else to make it through them. But it’s cathartic and makes me feel all tingly inside.

Don't think that my

original tirade was at all directed at your efforts. You are a true fan and that cannot be questioned. I do hope that people understand where I was coming from though…it gets frustrating when something you enjoy loses some luster.

by sickuvitall on Jul 23, 2009 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I can't disagree with your basic thesis

But I think that some people are just bitter about having to wade through any shit at all as we were previously spoiled with a community of entirely competent posters.

Yeah

and trust me, I feel the same way for the most part. But to say the site is a total loss, destroyed by the plebeian tide from Yahoo! and Brash – that seems a bit premature. I guess it didn’t help matters that the Yahoo! partnership coincided with the beginning of summer vacation, and now we have kids home for summer vacation who have nothing better to do than posting ten fanposts a day, but this is behavior that can probably be corrected with a little guidance. That’s pretty much all I’m saying – guidance before surrender.

There may be a ton of worthless fanposts cluttering up up the sidebar, but if you delve into some recent posts – specifically SI’s RIGHT NOW Top 100, AJ10’s Trade Rumors, and Stacey’s Off Day Randomness – the level of competence in those posts is of the highest quality, for the most part. Hell, even our trolls are pretty eloquent when they want to be.

The new members are going to come. We can either educate them as to the ethos of our community and set an example of quality, or we can let them run wild and destroy something beautiful. I guess your post, as well as sickuvitalls, is your way of illuminating these sort of issues. I guess I’m a born apologist. But at least we’re talking.

by PhilR8 on Jul 23, 2009 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you

on the calm, educating, be nice aspect, but did you really think the suggestion of sherrill and luuuuke for figgins was competence of the highest quality?

I just scrolled down the discussion and saw some good stuff and assumed the actual post was of similar quality. My bad, yo.

How many times did you re-read that to make sure you didn’t spell anything wrong? :-)

Probably almost none

If you can type, even if you don’t use the super-efficient home-key method, you should be able to mostly look at the screen and type at the same time, noticing typos at roughly the same time they appear.

Spelling errors are usually indicated by red wavy lines. Mistakes are always permissible but as you can learn from watching the Orioles play, “well we gave a good effort” is hard to hear when the mistakes are really hard to overlook. The Orioles supply us with many life lessons such as this.

THe mistake I make regularilly is holding down the shift key a character too long. I didn’t correct the beginning of that sentence as to provide an example. My name is Jacob and an interesting thing about me is that to/too bothers me much more than their/there.

My two pet peeves

I was about to type “my one pet peeve” but then I remembered a second one, so before I remember any more:

  1. lose/loose – “They’re going to loose this game.”
  2. ridiculous/rediculous – “That catch by Wise was rediculous!!!”

There are a few words that I have trouble with – I can’t remember how they’re spelled for some reason – and just acknowledging that fact usually keeps me humble. Just last month, I was at an engagement party playing a stupid party game where we had to write stuff down and I glanced over at my uncle’s sheet. My uncle is your silver-tongued salesman type and speaks well, but his spelling was downright embarrassing. I, on the other hand, sometimes have trouble articulating what I mean through speech but am pretty good at scrabble and very good at wheel of fortune. I guess this is an example of different people having different strengths and weaknesses.

“I could care less.”

No, the correct answer is, you COULDN’T care less. That would be bad. If you COUDL care less, then you are actually paying attention.

But the former doesn’t really make any sense.

But it was on The Brady BUnch!

Seriously, I remember an episode where one of the kids got busted for copying Marsh’a paper, because she always spelled ridiculous wrong, using an “e”. Like a teacher would remember that 2 years later.

As much as I hate to say it

I have to agree in part.

I’m fully aware that posters have every right to make fanposts concerning any random topic, but three line threads about someone finding cool shirts only drags down the blog as a whole.

I’m in complete agreement that this website just a few months ago contained almost exclusively informed posts and literally never strayed from the bottom line.

I don’t want to single any one poster out, but I will anyway.

I’m really started to get annoyed by this. It seems like very year we get worse against the Sox and Yanks. meanwhile we get better against the rest of the league.

And you know what I’m pretty angry about this.

Who here is tired of Fenway Park South and Let’s Go Yankees being echoed at an Orioles game.

Well I am.

 I feel much better now.

The above remarks were pulled from a fanpost in which the writer included no actual analysis, no interesting insight, and a lack of proper grammar.

I really don’t even want to condone something like this in fanshots, but if anything, a completely arbitrary and uninformed side comment belongs in the bottom bracket.

I guess I’m going to come off as an asshole and intranet elitist, but that’s my opinion in brief.

This was written before I read Phil’s dissertation, so I apologize if there is any repetition.

And...

as long as yankee fans will travel to Camden Yards, we will hear the “Let’s go yankees” chant. So to say that your tired of hearing it is a moot point. The O’s could have the best record in baseball and the MFY fans will still do all their cheers, just like any other teams fans.

I fully agree

with what everyone is saying in regards to Phil and brek. There is still quality here and Stacey is doing a great job keeping things updated…but something is different now. I guess I fear change, I don’t know. I don’t find myself laughing as much when I am reading the comments and there seems to be a different feel to the site now.

As far as there being a better online O’s community, well that is not likely. For that you would have to include some type of membership clause where you can be removed simply for being uninformed or annoying. For now, CC it is I suppose. Luv you all who do good things here!

My whole point was

The comparisons of the fans, and football to baseball. I really didn’t have a point other then they are different sports and the fans are too, so it was just annoying me at the time. I won’t create another post like this, but you to admit we heard good agruments all the way around.
