If Rich Hill loses his spot...

With another poor start from Rich Hill, it seems more and more likely that he is going to lose his job in the rotation very soon. Who should come up to replace him? Is it time to bring up one of our cherished young pitchers in Tillman or Arrieta? Or should we bring up a journey-man minor leaguer to give those guys some more time?

Dave Johnson brought up a name I hadn't even heard before: Andy Mitchell. The guy has been in the O's system since 2001 -- not once getting a Major League start. He has spent the last 5 seasons at Triple-A going 37-19 with a 3.96 ERA. Basically Dave's point was: we aren't winning anything this year, this guy has done everything asked and been effective at every level (though not dominant), so shouldn't he be rewarded with the chance to make a few starts in the Bigs while the Calvary develops a little more.

On a side note, I think Dave Johnson is a gem in our local sports media. The insight he provides is far deeper than anything else I've heard on the radio. I'm sure some could find his constant talk about what a pitcher is thinking and what the batter is thinking tiresome, but I love it. Go Dave, and Go O's!
