Kansas City Royals (39-59) at Baltimore Orioles (42-56), 7:05 pm EDT

Kansas City Royals at Baltimore Orioles, Jul 28, 2009 7:05 PM EDT

Now it's Jason Berken's turn. Jason has to know that either he or RIch Hill is going to be replaced by Chris Tillman. Hill had his chance last night and stunk up the joint. By pitching even competently against a team with one of the worst offenses in the American League, Berken can make a case to stick around for a few more starts.

If we don't win tonight, the Royals will have clinched at least a split of the series, which would be really, really demoralizing.

Tonight's opposing pitcher

When I see Brian Bannister, I see Brad Bergesen. The reasons are pretty obvious. Bannister is finding some career success despite having weak stuff. But on the other hand, when you’re that hittable, the margin of error is low, so you might have some clunker seasons (2008). Without researching it at all, I think 3E might have a similar career track as a mid-to back end of the rotation type of guy.

If they want to win the WS this year

they need better starting pitching. With Becket, and Lester they have two very solid starters, but I’d say Penny’s iffy, and it may be a little early to try to rely on Bucholz as a #3, and Smoltz has been pretty ineffective. Dice-k and Wakefield are also still ?’s, so as of today they only really have two and a half to three solid starting pitchers in the rotation.

How many times does a guy have to foul off your fastball before you go to something else??? Nah you just call for another fastball that will inevitably end up in a bad spot and watch it sail over the fence.

I have no beef with AJ

He should be swinging for a base hit, not trying to punch the ball the other way and effectively bunt the runner over.

by dkdc on Jul 28, 2009 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Huh???

Sorry but that’s awful baseball if you really believe that. It’s the 7th inning of a 1 run game. You get the guy over. Especially with 2 strikes.

by O'sFan21 on Jul 28, 2009 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Huh???????

Who exactly said anything about bunting???

by O'sFan21 on Jul 28, 2009 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

You want him to move the runner over

So why have him try to punch the ball the other way (which no batter can do every time) when he can just bunt him over.

You want to make an out to move the runner over, so why not cut out the middle man and bunt the ball?

by dkdc on Jul 28, 2009 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

which no batter can do every time???

WHO GIVES A SHIT ABOUT EVERY TIME? I WANT IT DONE THAT TIME!

Good teams move runners over. He should have done it.

by O'sFan21 on Jul 28, 2009 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Win expectancy

Bottom of the 7th
Home team up by 1 run

Runner on 2nd base, no one out: 84.7%
Runner on 3rd base, one out: 84.4%

You want him to do something that makes the Orioles less likely to win the game?

Baseball analysis has come a long way since the 50s, dude. Adam is one of our best hitters and he should be swinging away and not handcuff himself with some silly outdated shit.

by dkdc on Jul 28, 2009 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Hypothetical win % are great and all.

But the bottom line is if AJ gets the job done we’re winning right now.

by O'sFan21 on Jul 28, 2009 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Also WTF are you talking about?

The win expectancy numbers that you should be comparing are runner on 2nd and 1 out versus runner on 3rd and 1 out.

by O'sFan21 on Jul 28, 2009 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Why?

I’m arguing that its a bad play for Adam to give himself up to move the runner over.

by dkdc on Jul 28, 2009 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

The goal is to move him over, rather than get out and have him still there. Which is what he did... you know...

Sherrill is going for a save right now if he gets it done. You can say it’s outdated or whatever, but that’s the facts of the situation. If we lose this game that’ll be a huge reason.

By the way in Baltimore..

Are they saying heavy all dayrain for tomorrow? They are here in PA, just curious as if it rains I’ll probably get to see Tillman/Grienke when I go on Thursday!

The little things in life are the BEST! My 19 month old pointed at the TV and said Baseball the other day out of nowhere when we were watching the Phils. Now every time a games on he says baseball! What a feeling! Gotta start em young!

It's looking that way.

Although it was supposed to rain tonight as well. But look how that turned out.

We'll see what happens

Personally i’m just glad they play at 12:35( i can take the kids, and be back home usually by 5 with no traffic) thur and i’ll be glad to be there irregardless of who’s starting

If it wasn't for bad luck, this team would have no luck at all, I swear to God.

Fuck that.

We make our own luck. If they pretend to be major league hitters earlier in the game we’re not playing any more and there’s a W in the book.

You do realize how fucking terrible the Nationals and Padres are, right?

I've stopped watching

Sometimes I just don’t want to see my team blow it in extra innings.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

This always happens in baseball

A ball will get by a player because he misplays it or it’s overthrown and instead of sprinting back to get the ball, they leisurely jog to the ball while a runner is rounding the bases. Wieters casually jogged to the ball when Markakis’ throw went over his head on the bounce off the mound. John Buck would’ve been out at third if Wieters hustled to the ball. Fortunately Buck didn’t score but these are the small things this team needs to do in order to win again.

There are two outs, he'll score from second anyway.

Yes

I know this is the AL,and you don’t need to as much but c’mon learn how to bunt if you’re going to do it..

Fundamentals are costing us this game.

Inability to bunt and inability to move a runner over. Pretty simple stuff.

TUESDAY: Paul Hoynes reported earlier that the Dodgers might be shifting efforts from Cliff Lee to Sherrill, and Gordon Edes at Yahoo agrees. Edes says the Dodgers could package Elbert as well as third baseman Blake DeWitt to fill in the Orioles’ immediate needs. He also lists the Phillies among four other teams interested in Sherrill.
