Mr. Wieters at the Two-Month Mark
Matt Wieters made his MLB debut on May 29, so today is his two-month anniversary in The Show.
Data source: CBS Sportsline.
daveh873, discussing Tillman's debut in the open thread:
I'm excited that I dont have to explain why Wieters has a .250 BA and why that doesnt mean he’s a complete failure anymore to my not so baseball savvy friends.
So how is Matt doing? Two months is a reasonable amount of data to analyze. Skeptics would say that his average is stuck around .250. Apologists would say that the numbers are trickling north, and that the majors are filled with 10-year veterans who can't even hit .250.
It's a small data sample. Wieters is obviously still adjusting and hasn't even faced many pitchers twice yet. We'll know a lot more at the end of August.
But for right now?
Right now, I say the numbers are trending slowly upward; I have no reason to believe they won't continue to improve as he gets more comfortable and sees more pitches; and the hype has died down, which has to help his cause. Seeing his second game with 3+ hits in the space of three weeks is also encouraging.
I'm personally more than satisfied with what we're seeing.

when you're an O's fan, yea
Matt Wieters can get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop in under one lick.
oh c'mon

Wow
Your telling me your as an O’s fan and you still shoot down pessimism. How, why?
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

that chart..
looks like a stock chart, that’s gonna end very soon.

To clarify, my quote
was aimed at the fact that his 4 singles brought his BA up above .270, which makes him respectable to the average fan. I’m fine with how he has started off. I def. think his trending upward is not a fluke, and I expect god-like things from him very soon for him to show everyone that he is a diety very soon.

I am fine with the way he's hitting
Looks to me like he’s working his way towards about .285/.340/.425, which is great for a rookie catcher batting in the bottom 3 in the order. I hope he starts moving up the lineup soon, along with Reimold. To me, you bat those 2 together.
He is hitting the ball hard, his flyouts seem louder than other people’s flyouts. And his outfield wall single last night was hit too hard (or too low), it bounced off the wall so hard that it was easy for KC_RF to make a play at 2B.
"On my tombstone just write, THE SOREST LOSER THAT EVER LIVED." -- Earl Weaver
In his last 30 games, he’s hitting .296/.350/.417. The average AL catcher is hitting .252/.313/.398 on the year.
He’s already an above average player and hasn’t turned the power on yet. He’s still going to be awesome.
where can you get stats for in-between certain dates?
is that a baseball cube thing?

they don't post UZR.... or maybe I just can't find it.
Huff has gone back to being Huff. Deal with it.
Between B-R and Fangraphs (and maybe statcorner)
that should solve most of your baseball statistical needs.
Matt Wieters has a sustainably high BABIP
Fangraphs doesn’t post OPS+. If they did, they would be perfect.

I don't know how to find TBA
But it’s not hard to compute.

Also, Yahoo! gives last 10 games stats as well
But B-R is the best for break-out splits like that.

It'll take some time...
Just as it did for the majority of the young solid players on the O’s. I wrote a fanpost a few days prior to Wieters debut calling for fans to be patient.
Even the most highly rated prospects struggled in their first couple months in the big leagues. Nick Markakis, for example, batted .220 in his first 100 at-bats with only 2 homers. Through their first 100 at-bats, Adam Jones (.210), Evan Longoria (.220), and Dustin Pedroia (.180) each struggled in the first couple of months after getting called up. However, after their initial struggles, all of the aforementioned players turned into impact players. Either way, the Orioles don’t need him to produce in the short run. If Wieters is batting under .230 halfway through July, don’t panic. This kid seems like the real deal but we have to give him time to develop, much like the Orioles team as a whole.
Keep in mind that he was playing college ball just a couple years ago. As much fun as it is to call Wieters ‘the second coming of Jesus’ we need to keep it in perspective. By the way, Jesus didn’t start performing miracles right away either, am I correct?

So far, so good.
Two months in, I’m definitely satisfied with how Wieters is doing. He seems to be progressing nicely at the plate. In a perfect world he’d have a few more walks and a few more extra base hits, but that’s quibbling. Very few players set the world on fire immediately, and not all of those that do keep on doing so. He’s right on track.
If he didn't hit it so hard off the wall all the time
maybe he could have had more doubles by now

I am coming home soon
and I have to prepare my arguments for my best friend who is a Yankee fan. Thanks for the insight.

i think...
you’d much rather see some struggles, then improvement, than a guy who breaks out like a house of fire, is figured out and fades. every step up in the minors, he seems to have followed this pattern so we should all be very encouraged.

He is struggling against lefties...
…and the O’s have seen a crazy amount of lefties since his call up. 46% of his ABs have been against lefites and he has hit them poorly (,222/.290/.302) while hitting pretty well against RHP (.316/.350/.461). He won’t continue to face lefties at that rate, that fact alone will allow him to improve his overall production. Hopefully, he’ll adjust to lefties better as he gets more experience.
