Sano
Just wondering what do people think our chances are for Sano? I think we might get him because the pirates can only pay so much so maybe we can get him. Who wants to bet we get Sano and he turns out to be 24 and that's not his name . Also are we going after any other worldwide prospects, maybe Chapman? They called Chapman the left-handed Strausburg, could you believe it the 2 greates pitching prospects only a few miles away.

Its unlikely that we'd have a chance at any of them...maybe in a few years Baltimore will be a more desirable landing spot.

i dont know
I heard we have a really good shot and were in his top 3. We went to him to watch his workouts a few times and were willing to offer the most money. The only think holding back an offer is that we need to be sure that Sano is 16.

I"d be suprised
The Orioles have never signed a dominican prospect of note, so it would be a shocker if they signed the consensus #1 without signing some midlevel guys first to establish their name there.

I dont know
AM may just go for this. We dont have any infield prospects of note other than snyder. Our first round pick was relatively cheap. We have scouted this guy a good bit it sounds like, and we keep being called a “dark horse” for him. Going into the 2007 draft we were considered cheap, and our top two picks were well above slot and they both worked quite well. I dont think the fact that we have not gone for Dominican prospects will keep us from going for Sano.

When Chapman gets his paperwork straightened out, he's going to be the most sought after FA
I’d love to see Chapman in our rotation in the years to come, but I have a dirty awful feeling that he’s going to end up either in pinstripes or in red socks.
I would be ecstatic if we could get him, though. And I think we have a good shot at landing Sano, although I have a sneaking suspicion that he’s 45 years old.

haha
maybe we can get him, and the yanks and sox can’t get chapman for some odd reason, so we go out and get him and then these 2 become perennial all-stars!

Not likely
Chapman sounds like he is going to demand a very large contract. Jose Contreras received 4 years for $32 million when he defected, and with all the hype around this guy I would imagine he gets a good bit more. Only teams like the MFY can afford to make gambles for that much.

not tough competition
the only 2 other top teams are the twins and pirates. I think if we give him enough money and a quick opportunity he would be willing to join us.

kind of odd, really
Why aren’t the big spenders pursuing this kid if he’s all that? But hey, maybe it’s like the Miguel Tejada sweepstakes!

People keep questioning his age
But the pirates did a bone scan test or something like that, and the most that can be off is a year. This test said he was 16 or 17, i cant remember which. So the oldest he could be is 18 and he would still be a legit prospect. Not to mention MLB is doing extensive testing on him, if he is older than 17 i would be shocked.

No results yet
As far as I had read the results of their DNA tests had not come back yet. Maybe when it comes back the Os will sign Sano the Last Dinosaur with a solid bonus but this is all contingent on age.

They're testing these guys like fossils!!!!!
That’s awesome. I can see Sano walking into the Smithsonian’s Dinosaur research center and saying, “Hey guys. I’m here for my test.”

Since he's Dominican....
Would he say “Hey individuos. Estoy aquí para mi prueba.”

Chapman
Apparently, he claimed to be 26 at the WBC, but is listed at 19. Makes you think.

the Cubans would like about someone’s age to get them into 18U tournaments and such things? Not surprising.

Anybody have a link
about this Chapman fellow? I have read about Sano, and love the kid, but I don’t know who the other guys is.

yeah...
just to echo other comments, i feel like now it’s ONLY a matter of whether or not sano IS who he says he is and who he is is a teenager.
looks like the twins are hanging on by a thread and if it comes down to o’s v. buccos, i like those odds.

That’s my guess as well. I don’t buy this 16 year old garbage at all given the rampant lying and Sano’s physical size.

twins
they are a reportedly distant 3rd so it comes down to us and the pirates, is it possible for both of them to lose?

Latest from MLBtraderumors.
8:58pm: ESPN’s Jorge Arangure, who’s been on the ball since the international signing period began on July 2, just rattled off a couple of interesting “tweets” involving 16-year-old shortstop Miguel Angel Sano:
“Am convinced Sano will not get record money. Orioles see him as late-first-round talent, which does not equal $4 million. More like $1-$1.5.”
“Those who think Orioles will give record $ for Sano remember: They gave $3.2m to No. 4 pick [Brian] Matusz last year. Gave [Matt] Hobgood $2.4 this yr.”
“There’s no way Orioles are giving more to Sano than they gave Matusz and Hobgood.”
If Arangure is correct, and the other teams tracking Sano follow suit, Wagner Mateo, singed July 2 by the Cardinals for $3.1MM, will go down as the highest-paid international prospect from 2009. Sano has been courted this summer by the Twins, Pirates and O’s, who are awaiting the results of an MLB investigation into his age and identification.
Late first round money sounds sensible even if he turns out to be 18 years old.

I saw that
And i think there is a flaw in this guys thinking. Yes you would pay a late first round pick $1-1.5 million but this guy is essentially a late first pick that is a FA. The real question is how much do the orioles value a late first round pick in the open market and not when the players options are limited.
The other thing i was wondering is how much of this is AM keeping Sano’s value down as opposed to actual inside information. Something isn’t adding up, if the Orioles are not offering over $3 million, and I think I remember the pirates offering around $3 million, then why did the twins bail out? They said it was too pricey but that has been the known price for a while. I dont know if the O’s sign him, but something isn’t making sense to me.

Yes, very true, but I think their assessment of Sano as being worth late first round money is reasonable. Obviously, what offers he actually receives could be very different in a free market situation, and O’s may have to offer more money than what they think Sano is worth in order to land him.
Something isn’t adding up, if the Orioles are not offering over $3 million, and I think I remember the pirates offering around $3 million, then why did the twins bail out?
Arangure maintains that the Pirates never offered $3M. I think teams are waiting for MLB’s investigation into his age to end before making a firm bid.

I dont know how you box off parts of somebodys comment
But that is very useful.
I still dont know why the Twins dropped out. I’ll take your word that the Pirates never offered $3 million, but that makes me wonder even more why the Twins dropped out. Maybe they get back into it or are waiting for MLB’s investigation to end like you said. That is the part I really dont understand, his price is not that high (compare to what was expected) but teams are dropping out.
Either way i am interested to see who lands this guy, especially if its the O’s cause we sure could use a talented SS/3B prospect in the minors.

we are about o offer him more than hobgood, mlbtraderumors.com said it would be something around 2.4M. I don’t think it’s enough but you never know.
