Orioles 7, KC 3; also, Overnight Open Thread
I just don't feel like writing a full-on recap. It's too damn late. You can read the Sports Network recap here.
Suffice to say, Tillman made his debut and pitched well enough to keep his team in the game, although he gave up three dingers and was out before the end of the fifth. He had some sweet changeups though, and showed a lot of poise.
Zach Greinke stuck around long enough to throw 116 pitches, only to watch his bullpen give the game away in the late innings.
At the beginning of the night, the O's scored two runs off Greinke (thanks to a B-Rob single and an ADAM JONES, SON! dinger), then loaded the bases, and then proceeded to not score. Per usual. It looked, once again, as though the Orioles would fail to knock out a starter on the ropes and their bats would have a generally anemic night.
Fortunately Robinson Tejeda decided to let them back into the game, and then some. Late inning heroics included a game-tying double by Jones in the seventh, followed by a tie-breaking double by Markakis.
A win the Orioles needed, given their week. And in other news, the Phillies got Cliff Lee, which means the Dodgers didn't, which means Sherrill might be headed west any day now.
Fun fact: The Royals finished last night's game without a single assist. That's the first time that's happened in their franchise's history.
The series finale is at 12:35 today, which duck will tell you about whenever he gets his sorry a** out of bed.
This is your Open Thread.

My lucky shirt is now 12-0...
…but I was hoping that Tillman would get the win. He pitched well enough, but had a couple Guthrie moments.
I can’t believe the ump cheated Reimold out of a BB on that tremendous at-bat.
It looked to me like Tillman and Greinke had very different strike zones.
But maybe I’m just a homer.
The Washington Wizards: providing career scoring nights for unknown opposing bench players since 2004.
I wasn’t there, but it did look like Greinke was getting a little bit more generous calls. Some of Tillman’s called balls that were being booed really were balls and were a bit more outside than Greinke’s but still. That Reimold non-BB was horrendous.
Much like Tillman, I’m glad that start is out of the way and now he can get down to business. I wasn’t really that disappointed in the start. He hung a couple pitches and labored a little late.

The strike zone expanded a little
later in the game. From the perspective of the stands. It went both ways.
From the Land of Pleasant Living...
I stand
by that it was slanted ever so slightly in Greinke’s direction and probably rightfully so. Man, he’s really good. 35 pitches in the 1st inning and still gets through what, 6? Sat down 9 Os in a row at one point last night.
Don't let the sunshine fool ya. - Townes Van Zandt
Would've liked for the Tillhombre to get the win, but no you can't always get what'cha wannntttttt.

but if you try sometimes
you get what you need. and we needed a win. thanks for trying

The Future™ Debuts
Not a great performance, more so to me because he didn’t make it through five than because he gave up three bombs.
What I liked was that he made it very clear what he did wrong, relying almost entirely on just two pitches (though I thought the change was pretty darn good for the most part) and putting pitches up in the zone. He said, in so many words, that he’ll have a lot to draw from in his next outing, which is good since it will be against Boston.
I’m really excited to see him go against Boston, to see him work his breaking stuff more/better. If he improves, and by all accounts he’s going to, then they’ll be on their way to a legitimate 4 man rotation. That’s something that we haven’t said for a long, long time.
...Behold, a pale horse. The man that sat upon it was Wieters, and hell followed with him.
"BJ on the BE" - Kierkegaard
what got me
was the fact that tillman was throwing lots of fastballs. he showed decent breaking stuff when he actually threw it, which wasnt often.

i cant pin that completely on zaun
i doubt that he’d call fastball after fastball even for a young pitcher

I'm not saying it's his fault
But he did call an awful game.
I am not so sure he'll be facing the PHN if I did the rotation right Tillman will face Detroit in the 1st game of that series

I was at the game last night
Besides the fact that it was so disgustingly humid that my hair was a giant hot mess, it was a fun game. Would have liked to see Tillman do a bit better but that’s cool. I was so annoyed that Wieters wasn’t starting. It made no sense! He caught Chris all of last year and the first part of this year, he’s hitting really well of late, AND he was just off on Sunday. It’s BS.

When it was pouring rain last night
I was thinking of how you must be crossing your fingers.
I have a good feeling about today’s game. Bergy is gonna lead us to the W.
When Adam hit his HR last night we were saying how the ultimate knife to the heart of Mariners fans would be Chris Tillman getting the win, Adam Jones hitting a HR, and George Sherrill getting the save. Maybe next time.

It never came close to pouring in Annapolis, I believe
But I was inside at work. On my break at 7:30, it was more of a mist than a drizzle.
If we had lost last night, I just imagine Bergesen waking up today disgusted and determining that he would not allow the team to be swept at home by the Royals. His t-shirt night is on the 11th. I’m finding someone who wants to go but doesn’t want the shirt so I can send one to my brother in California. He saw his first start about 3 weeks before moving away. It’ll be the only Bergesen shirt in LA, I’m sure.

Corey Patterson coming back to the AL East?
hee! From the NY Post
Corey Patterson was recently put on outright waivers by the Nationals and the Yankees are considering signing him to fill in as the backup center fielder until Brett Gardner recuperates from his hand injury, the Post has learned.
The third overall pick in the 1998 draft, Patterson never developed the plate discipline necessary to capitalize on his elite speed and power potential. He hit just .133 in five games earlier this season with the Nationals. At Triple-A, he hit .274 with seven homers and 14 steals. The Yanks would view him as a 25th man who could spell Melky Cabrera plus run or play defense late in a game.

Attendance
Apparently lower last night than on Tuesday. Guess no one knows about The Future.
PS-Greenday concert kind of sucked.
Several things...
I paid good money to see Billy Joe sing and play the guitar, not random fans.
There were a ton of little kids there, and they went nuts when he said “Who out there are old-school Greenday fans?” Uhhh…fuck that, they would have been infants when Dookie, Insomniac, and Nimrod came out.
And the part when he had his nipple out and he was groaning was uncomfortable.
I did enjoy the music that Greenday actually performed though.

Nimrod = Old School Green Day?

THAT’S old-school Green Day.
Kids, I swear…
"We're not the other teams' farm system." - Andy MacPhail
Oh yeah
It was definitely a family atmosphere which threw me for a loop since the last time I saw greenday I saw more people carried out by security than kids under 15 (very early on). I still thought the music was pretty awesome.
I could have done without the fans singing, but I thought the guy who came up and played guitar was pretty badass.
I also was thoroughly wasted so didn’t really give a shit about stupid little kids or him rubbing his nipple. haha
I never ended up that drunk, problem number 1.
The guitarist was pretty good, almost looked planned. I wish I had picked different seats though, bad move on my part.

i agree
but minor league stats dont necessarily translate to MLB success. that said, i wouldnt be trading one of my top prospects for freddy sanchez unless i thought sanchez was the absolute key to making the playoffs (and i doubt he is as far as the giants are concerned)

Reimold
I agree that Reimold was cheated after a great at bat. His plate discipline is excellent. By the way, if I am reading the Frederick box scores correctly, Bill Rowell is splitting time with another outfielder named Cash. Is that correct? What a wasted draft pick. Do the O’s release him after the year or let him repeat for a third year at Frederick?
Teams are calling about Guthrie
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/07/teams-inquiring-on-guthrie.html
Would you guys trade him?I dont think hes going anywhere at his current low value. I wouldn’t unload him until the young guys prove they can pitch, Guthrie is still a pretty useful (and cheap) guy to have around.
Im one of the biggest Guts naysayers..
But trading him would be stupid. He is just a decent pitcher having a bad year.
by John Stephens on Jul 30, 2009 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions
yea i dont think his value is as low as everybody thinks
hes not having a great season, but even good pitchers face rough times. i think a lot of teams are using his current troubles as an opportunity to low-ball the o’s
by twistedlogic on Jul 30, 2009 10:04 AM EDT up reply actions
It shouldn't be very high to begin with.
Let’s not kid ourselves, Jeremy Guthrie is a #3 at best on a contending club. He’s not even our #1 anymore, and we’re in last place, 14 games below .500.
Now, he is cheap – $600K ain’t breaking the bank. And he’s under team control for a while still – I believe at least 2 more years.
Let’s see the offer than we can talk.
"We're not the other teams' farm system." - Andy MacPhail
True
I just don’t want to see him go for turds. I believe he can be in our rotation in the future, but right now we will just get low-ball deals that are not worth it.
We shall see.

OK, I'll elaborate
A #4 is typically a .500 Win-Loss record pitcher with an ERA in the low-to-mid 4.00s and a WHIP around 1.40.
Now, what are YOU gonna give up for that?

Trading you "best" pitcher or "best" hitter
To a team who doesn’t fully understand that they are NOT the best on the team usually works out. So in that sense, it would make sense to trade Guthrie, but in order for it to be worth it, our trading partner would have to be slightly stupid, which is not out of the realm on the MLB Hot Stove.

Hendo to the Rockies?
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9871032/MLB-trade-deadline-buzz:-Thursday%27s-edition
The Rockies still could make one more move before the deadline, according to Tracy Ringolsby of FOXSports.com.
The team is looking for a second left-handed reliever to complement Franklin Morales, and the Orioles’ Mark Hendrickson is high on their list.
Hendrickson, 35, went 1-4 with a 6.35 ERA as a starter this season, but is 4-0 with a 2.94 ERA as a reliever, holding opponents to a .280 on-base percentage.
only if you want to give up a top pitching prospect or two in addition
even then it still wouldnt happen
At last night's game
They did this thing between innings called “Advice from the Orioles.” This guy says, “I just met a new girl and I really want to impress her. What should I do for our first date?”
Adam Jones: Just take her to dinner and a movie. Sounds cliche, but it works. (especially if you’re Adam Jones)
Brian Roberts: Take her back to my place and impress her with my baseball card collection
Aubrey Huff: Melting Pot (Aubrey was hilarious when he said this. I can’t really explain. But Melting Pot?)
George Sherrill: Sno Cones!
Nick Markakis: Take her to the Orioles game. Maybe we’ll get on the kiss cam.

Couldn't watch the game...
… as I’m out on the west coast, but the key was driving up Greinke’s pitch count early. First there was the 35-pitch first inning, but then again the pitcher always throws a lot of pitches if people are getting on base, and the Orioles sent eight batters to the plate that inning. More impressive was the inning where they went down 1-2-3, but still forced Greinke to throw 27 pitches, mostly because Huff and Reimold each took twelve pitches to strike out. Best consecutive strikeouts to open an inning ever.
+1
Well, maybe there were better highlights to this game, but as a general approach to winning, especially against good starters with bad bullpens behind them, running up counts is great, and not done enough (IMHO). ‘Course if this were, say, the PHN, and you were up againt Brad Penny, say, then don’t count on getting him out of the game as the way to finally score some runs, because by the time you get to the Boston pen the game is pretty much over. But for lots of other teams it makes sense.
