Before tonight's series opener against the Boston Red Sox, the Orioles are expected to place Brad Bergesen (bruised left shin) on the disabled list and recall reliever Chris Ray from Double-A Bowie.
...
That will leave the Orioles with an eight-man bullpen and only four starting pitchers, and potentially force them to make another roster move Tuesday, when Bergesen was scheduled to start against the Detroit Tigers. The Orioles also could opt to put one of their long relievers -- Mark Hendrickson or Brian Bass -- in the rotation for a couple of starts.
Bergesen, the rookie right-hander who is 7-5 with a 3.43 ERA and had emerged as a legitimate American League Rookie of the Year candidate, was hit in the left shin on Thursday by a liner off the bat of Kansas City Royals' first baseman Billy Butler. Bergesen limped off the field, but then collapsed in the tunnel leading up to the Orioles' clubhouse.
He had two sets of X-rays done and both came back negative. However, he left Camden Yards on crutches Thursday, and in a significant amount of pain. The Orioles don't want to take any chances with the 23-year-old, who has been the team's most consistent starter this season.

Just playing it safe
No big deal. They probably would’ve shut him down in mid-September anyways, so we were going to have a few turns of the rotation without Bergesen one way or another.
Of course, that’s easy to say, but let’s see if I can actually stomach a couple Pauley/Waters/Bass/Hendrickson starts. I thought we were supposed to be done with those.

Jake Jake Jake
Pitchers not belly itchers. I understand the reasoning behind not wanting to rush our best prospects. But could it really be that damaging? Pitching in the major leagues along side four of his peers and a catcher he is accustomed to? For a last place team? Berken had fewer starts in AAA than Jake has.

last place is exactly why we dont want to rush him up
these guys are supposed to be the players that will bring us out of last place. getting knocked around in the majors does wonders on confidence.

getting outs in the major leagues also does wonders on ones confidence

maybe
but you need the offense to back you up there. the orioles arent winning a whole lot of games. i’d keep them where they have the best chance of winning

Berken had a 1.05 ERA at AAA
Jake has a 4.70 ERA in AAA.
You can’t promote him until he solves AAA hitters.

I agree
Unfortunately Arrieta’s line does not prove out in his ten starts at AAA this year. But we will probably see Pauley or Waters and they have not solved AAA hitters yet.

he really hasn't, though.
of those three, i’d prefer dirty waters.

Waters has pitched one very good game in the Majors though
I was there, @LAA, and it was pretty awesome

That two-hitter
that was an awesome game. I wasn’t there but I remember watching on TV. Got really excited for his future and then…

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

this was my reaction.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

given the circumstances
good. last thing i wanted to see was him trying to “be a man” and pitch through pain. I can’t imagine jarring his landing leg 165+ (pithces+warmups) times 4 days from now would’ve done anything positive.
Gablehouser: Well, that’s too bad, because the answer your teammate gave was correct.

Thank Wieters for Tillman and Hernandez
as I still have a reason to care about watching some of these pitching performances

That sucks, but it is unfortunately not surprising
I think anybody who saw him get off the field yesterday had a feeling he might end up on the DL. I’m glad to hear that the X-rays remain negative and I hope that the bruise subsides quickly. It is better to be safe than sorry with our unexpected surprise rookie, but I hope he’s well again soon and can return to the form we have seen.
Get well! We miss you already, 3E!

Pretty sure we'll see him after a rehab start
If there’s no hairline fracture, I’d imagine he will be back for the O’s in mid-August, still 6 weeks to go in the season. Get some rest, come back strong for those last 7 starts or so…

**assumes the fetal position**
I guess it was too much to hope that we’d get a win every five days…
On the first day, Chuck Norris created God. But the day before that, Matt Wieters created Chuck Norris and the calendar.

Hernandez is still here, Berken looked better and Tillman will improve
and Guts is still Guts – if the team can score, he can win.

Relax! We already knew this...
The 2009 season is a loss!
I think if the season ended today we would have what the 7th overall pick in next years draft? Hopefully it’s used on an advanced college player not a high school kid. I fully expect another collapse at the end but what else would you expect with so many young players? It’s going to be better next year. Relax we knew they were going to be bad in 2009 all the way back in 2007.
We did see some good things though…
Matt Wieters made his pro debut and is in the process of learning the ML game.
Nolan Reimold may end up as AL ROY and seems to be our Left Fielder for a long time.
Brad Bergesen looks like he could be a valuable SP if he is healthy and has control.
David Hernandez when healthy teases us with the idea that he could be a good starter.
Adam Jones lived up to his hype and became an all star.
Cezar Itzuris was an upgrade defensively
Then there is the downside…
Melvin Mora has basically run himself out of town
Adam Eaton has made no real case to be a starter anywhere
Rich Hill had trouble putting two good innings together
George Sherrill being traded has left the team with a viod
Koji Uehara having spent as much time on the DL as he did in the rotation
Basically the club had no choice but to try different players as starting pitchers all year long. That in itself is a recipe for disaster. I realize Andy Mac Phail has worked hard to acquire potential starting pitching for a long term solution and it’s the right plan. However having placed the Orioles in too much of a “wait and see” stance with it’s current pitching has doomed the club. When you couple that with sub standard batting at first base and a sudden burst of young players in the line up everynight. You have to know the team was sacrificing it’s present for the future.
We can partially blame manager Dave Trembley for some of the defensive mistakes and be correct in doing so. However changing managers will do nothing to improve the clubs standing. The club has placed itself into a long term solution. Let’s follow the course and see if we cannot win 75 games next season by adding one bat and perhaps another pitcher capable of eating some innings up.
