Independence Day GameThread: Orioles @ Angels
Baltimore Orioles at Los Angeles Angels, Jul 4, 2009 9:05 PM EDT

Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world, and you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind. "Mankind" -- that word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests.
Perhaps it's fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom. Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution. But from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist.
And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared, in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight!" We're going to live on! We're going to survive!
Today, we celebrate our Independence Day!

I love that movie.
It was too good to be true for an aspiring sci-fi nut like myself when that movie hit the box office.
It’s the one I always hold up when someone asks me “oh yeah, when was Will Smith any good?” that and MIB.

Will Smith has been really good in more movies than just 'Independance Day'
While ‘I am Legend’ was very disappointing, Will Smith puts together a really good performance with a high degree of difficulty.
While I absolutely adore Jeff Goldblum and Randy Quaid, can’t say I really much enjoyed ‘Independance Day’.

something I love about that movie
when it was originally released on VHS, the cover of the package made it look like a screwball comedy:
Will Smith was hugely popular at the time, and I think they wanted to take advatage of that. I had mental images of his fans taking the movie home, watching it, and going “WTF?!”
Since then, the packaging has changed to more accurately reflect the thinkpiece that it is.

Embrace the cheese
Granted, this movie came out when I was 12 and I thought it was awesome then, some of it may just be nostalgia. But really it’s got everything you could ever want in a mindless movie. Gratuitous destruction of property, antagonists whose sole motivation is to destroy, scrappy underdogs coming through in the right place at the right time while firing off some of the most iconic cheesy one-liners in cinematic history, incorporating one of the great American legends (Area 51) all couched in the Fourth of July holiday to give us a generous dose of American exceptionalism.
I don’t think it gets any more awesome than Will Smith punching an angry, tentacled alien IN THE FACE and then lighting a cigar to bask in his triumph.
God bless America, man.

On a different note...
It’d be nice to see Berken do well today. Even after the last outing, his FIP is still a decent 4.38 and his LD% remains really too low for him to keep giving up a .343 BABIP unless something else weird is afoot. He’s pitched better than his ERA shows, it seems, and it’d be nice to translate that into a QS.

I think Berken would like to see Berken do well
because he knows he has options and Rich Hill doesn’t, and Chris Tillman is gettin’ pretty big in the ol’ rear view mirror right now.

I also don’t think Dibble gets what a hold is, or how knowing how many of them he had could have helped his career.

Horrible news indeed
I’ve always liked Steve McNair, not his fault the Ravens picked him up about 5 years too late. He was one of the toughest quaterback ever. You never know what a guy is really like from his public persona but seemed likeable enough, not your typical NFL big mouth. Tragic

Let's get some 4th of July fireworks, O's!
Had about five people in the neighborhood shooting off some fireworks tonight. I’ve never seen anything like it before. It wasn’t the total cheap just-across-the-PA-border stuff either, I’m talking some legit pyrotechnics that you can hear the boom when they launch, see them flying up and then get some pretty cool blossoms.
Happy birthday, America.

I know when I was younger it was always something hush-hush if you were even blasting off some firecrackers – they definitely didn’t sell them anywhere. But in the last few years you’ll find some cheap sparklers and a few other ones even in grocery stores, and fireworks tents pop up here and there in MD right before the 4th with some higher-grade stuff. I’m not sure exactly when that changed.

He's giving up some walks since coming back...
…I’d like to see his ERA since then…’cause it was really bad before the assignment.

Nick, you better make up for not making that catch by doing something with your bat.
Bail Baez out of taking a loss, please.

I was nodding my head when he said this
Palmer could have been talking about any division leader – Angels, Red Sox – the Orioles serve up the big plays and lose. The Orioles are losers.

Nice little 3DG history lesson there
The “Jefferson Lives!” story is one of the great ones.
John Adams, on Independence Day (in his original letter, he refers to the 2nd of July of 1776, but who’s counting): “It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”
You ask yourself sometimes what the founders of this country would think of it today. I think we can say John Adams would be pleased with how July 4 is marked each year.

The sad thing is
we give this away by making our own mistakes. It seems to form a pattern here. Every time we get an early lead, we will stay down and let other teams shut us down. then either bull pen will implode or we will make enough mistakes to make it implode, either way, we let other teams have nice magical comeback night….
Geez

Coming back from being down 4 in the 5th is not magical
But everything else is accurate.

What is magical is the way they put 11 unanswered run on the board by just allowing
The O’s to beat themselves.

Just when I think I have an idea what is wrong with this team
They find another way to make themselves look like fools. Someone needs to find a good shrink to build some self esteem and a new coaching staff from top to bottom with some balls to kick some of these “stars” in the ass to get them motivated.

The O's just want us to appreciate it it when they're good.
…after we’re done rebuilding for the previous 12 and next 10 years.
yeah, that’s it.

Just back from the game
the guys look totally bored/sleepwalking/phoning it in. lackluster. i know berken was pithcing slow, but the guys in the field all looked like they’re ready for the AS break to begin yesterday. i wanted to yell at them, but we were upped deck. it was really obvious, and really disappointing. incredibly low-key and lackadaisical.
and my spanking-new AJ road jersey is now 0 for 2. :(
