GameThread: O's (36-46) @ Mariners (42-39)

Baltimore Orioles at Seattle Mariners, Jul 6, 2009 10:10 PM EDT

Eaux's Notes:
  • Bergy On The Bump: Brad Bergesen tries to earn his first win on the road this season. He's 0-1 with a 4.88 ERA in five starts away from the Yards.
  • Home Cooking: Seattle has been red hot at Safeco winning 9 of it's last 11 home games.
  • O's Own Washburn: One bright spot for the O's is Jarrod Washburn's on the mound for the Mariners. Washburn has been absolutely horrendous in his last six starts against the O's, going 0-4 and posting a 6.06 ERA.
  • The Doc Feels Right At Home: Since leaving Seattle Adam Jones is batting .412 (14 for 34) at his old home. Another thing that should be noted is the Doc has gone 4-9 with three doubles when facing Washburn in his career.

Guess we ran into each other editing your story

When I opened it, it was empty, so I added stuff. I deleted mine, and added the lineup widget. Sorry, dude, hope I didn’t cause too much confusion.

Brad Bergesen Fun Fact

from B-R.com

Of starting pitchers in the American League who have pitched at least 75 innings this year, Brad Bergesen has the 6th best BB/9 at 1.87. Pitchers in front of him: Roy Halladay, Zack Greinke, Kevin Slowey, Scott Baker, Carl Pavano. And he’s tied with James Shields.

Of course, he’s already walked two tonight.

(just ignore that Carl Pavano in there. He still sucks)

It’s not like we’re getting shut out by some guy with an ERA north of 5.00.

I’ll grant you that given his career numbers include a sub-.500 W/L record and an ERA a bit over 4.00, it’s likely he’s gotten lucky this year, but still.

Would recording total baserunners advanced be a legitimate statistic?

I’m not sure if it’d be useless in that the number is contingent on the aptitude/speed of the baserunners or useful in that you can track a player’s ability to move runners over and/or drive the ball.

Is it recorded already? Ive been thinking about this for the past few days.

by duck on Jul 6, 2009 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I'm sure

But throughout the evolution of baseball, new statistics have been added which have eventually became commonplace.

I’m not talking just sacrifices, but rather noting when a batter drives a gapper and can move a runner 1st to home rather than a 2B on the line which only advances 1st to 3rd.

In 50 years, they’ll be lamenting the fact that baserunners advanced weren’t recorded, and I’ll be there to take the credit.

by Baltimo on Jul 7, 2009 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Wouldn't there be a lot of judgment involved?

Like whether it was the hit that gave the runner that extra base or the quality of the relay throws or how quickly the outfielder got to the ball?

When you first mentioned it I thought you were referring to how often teams successfully move runners from 2nd to 3rd with no outs.

by O'sFan21 on Jul 7, 2009 12:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Right; my only issue with the statistic is that it’s too reliant on the runners/fielders, but every valid stat is pretty much reliant on other players as well.

You’re probably right in that there are too many variables, though.

Yeah it used be pathetic. Now it's bordering on comical.

How long can they run him out there every day without hitting any HRs? I think there are at least a few NL pitchers who have the same # or more HRs than that in a fraction of the ABs.

This hitting thing has to be addressed at some point

Washburn is not Cy Young. I hear Palmer and the other Guru’s constantly talking Kranitz and the pitchers but never mentions Terry Crowley. What is going on here. Why can we not hit or have a clue at the plate? Very frustrating. I know our staff can not pitch great games all the time but if they give up 4 or 5 runs we should not be out of the game. We should be able to pick up the pitchers too. I don’t see it now.

no, but the attitude/agressiveness has to be addressed, and it isn't...

i didn't say someone has to yell

i’m just saying this team is completely lackluster. you have to demand effort sometimes, especially when there isn’t any. no one has to yell, but you can’t tell me that this coaching staff has this team playing to potential. that’s all I’m saying. A change has to be made. It won’t magically raise BA’s or lower ERA’s, but it will bring in a new attitude and new expectations. That needs to happen.

by Esskay and Natty Hon! on Jul 7, 2009 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Name names.

Name EXACTLY who you think is not performing up to expectations over teh course of this entire season.

That sad truth is, this team isn’t very good. Sure, our OF is above average, and our C is going to be a stud, but aside from that, we are deficient in every area. 3 of our starters right now (Hill, Berken, Hernandez) wouldn’t start for another MLB team, and Guthrie would be a 5 on most teams. Sherrill wouldn’t be a closer on most AL teams. Brian Roberts’ numbers are down, I’ll granjt you that. But he’s still leading the league in runs and doubles.

So, you tell me EXACTLY who is underperforming. I think it’s more of a case of you overestimating the talent level of this club.

"We're not the other teams' farm system." - Andy MacPhail

by duck on Jul 7, 2009 12:27 AM EDT up reply actions

are you watching these games?

i’m not saying that everyone should be hitting .400 and winning 20 games, i’m saying there is no effort whatsoever out of anybody. our fundamentals are PATHETIC. Every last player loafs it at some point. That comes from above.
I’m not claiming to be some baseball GM genius, I’m just saying that this team needs some fight. They should be improving, that’s what young teams do. They are getting more and more lackluster every night. Sure, it’s hard to play on a losing team year after year, but our fundamentals should be a priority. That includes hustle, baserunning, communication, etc…. all things that flat out aren’t happening.

I don’t have a name for you. Sorry.
I’m not overestimating. My high school and college coaches didn’t yell at me to light a fire. And, I don’t believe in coaches being capable of magic.

If you think Trembley is doing a good job, how about you tell me how he is doing that? Is it our hustle? Our baserunning? Our mental mistakes?

It is not unreasonable to blame a manager in this case

...

“So, you tell me EXACTLY who is underperforming. I think it’s more of a case of you overestimating the talent level of this club”

Where did I make that comment? I stick to my original comment that our team lacks desire, fundamentals, and a leader. No where did I say B-rob needs more doubles or Markakis needs more RBI’s. No where did I say this team should be fighting for first… where did I say anything to give you an idea that I think they should even be above .500? Go back and read my comments please. They need a leader, not DT.

by Esskay and Natty Hon! on Jul 7, 2009 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions

So, if they aren't underperforming, as you seem to be arguing

in your non-response to my question, what in the hell is a new manager gonna do? You say they should be improving…WHO???? WHO isn’t improving that should be? Answer that, and we can have a meaningful conversation.

Again, I argue this team is exactly as good as their record shows them to be. The Orioles aren’t that good.

And if you can prove this team lacks desire, feel free. And what the hell does a “leader” do in baseball, anyway? This isn’t the NFL, Ray Lewis won’t do us any good here.

Again, I ask – exactly who is not performing at a level that a new manager could lead them to improve?
