A's 9- O's 1, This is Birdland???
Jeremy "Ace" Guthrie, my man, was on the mound for the start of this one. Having an easy first getting for infield ground balls and not laboring to hard to get out of the inning. He still threw 19 pitches but it was a good inning. He struggled in the second putting runners at 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. He then gave up a single to Ellis Then a silly little pop up brought in a second run, putting the A's up by 2. They really didn't hit too many balls that hard in that inning. Guthrie got through the third with 69 pitches, way too many. Guts made it through the fourth easy but still threw to many pitches. In the 5th a lead off "error" was followed by an out, then two singles to bring in one more. Then after loading the bases with 2 down, Mark Ellis singled to bring in two more. Hendo finished the inning after a very poor showing from Guts. 4.2 ip 11 hits, and all to one of the worst hitting teams. He did not exactly improve his case to be part of this rotation next year.HOWEVER, The A's got quite lucky with some of their hits and didn't hit a single homerun.
While the first was nothing special for the offense, it is important to note that both Jones and Markakis swung at the first pitch with a runner on a first. The second started with a leadoff walk, Wiggy took second on the wild pitch, then after a wee base running error, that didn't make much difference put Scott at second. That was followed by a lame strikeout from Melvin Mora and a groundout. Cesar Izturis lead off with a plunker single. Brian Roberts followed with a beautiful bunt, absolutely wonderful, putting runners at first and second. Nolan Riemold had a sac fly and the good baserunning of the O's moved runners to second and third. But Jones struck out on three pitches and Markakis grounded out on the first pitch, leaving two in scoring position.

Good to note that Nick Markakis has reached base in 31 straight games (thanks O'sfan21) now after a double in the 6th, with one out. That was followed by a ground out, and a Luke Scott.
MelMo had a leadoff single in the 7th, Then Matt Wieters brought a double, and a storm. After that the Orioles made three outs.
Cla Meredith struggled in the 9th giving up 4 more runs.
In the bottom of the inning, LUKE SCOTT, drilled one to left center, the one good thing of this game. His first long ball in a month.
This game was the combination of everything bad about the Orioles all boiled down into one game, there is really no other way of saying it. No hitting, no pitching, no base running, no nothing.

What is the deal with the A's...
In 4 games they’ve scored 30 runs 30! to the O’s 6. All from one of the worst offensive teams in the AL. 16 hits for the team that has the worst avg. in the AL. yippie.

the deal is
that they are a quality team who is really rebuilding and we are not? that they appear to be fundamentally sound that we are not?
or just because A is in front of O in the alphabet…. I don’t know. They just flat out own us

Whoever voted for Luke clearly didn't watch the game very carefully, because his non-HR ABs were abismal.
Also I’m sorry, but to/too confusion really bothers me (as well as your/you’re).
And Markakis has not HIT in 31 straight games – he’s REACHED BASE in 31 straight games. If he had hit in 31 straight games it would be a much bigger deal.

Fixed it. And yes, he looked terrible throughout the whole game.

I voted for Luke because I felt he deserved it after finally hitting a dog.

That's about the weakest "Birdland" I could imagine.
A solo HR down by 9 when you’ve looked atrocious at the plate all night. Kind of a stretch in my book.

Man what's going on........?
I thought the O’s would give us a glimpse into the future for next year, but it looks like we’re headed for just another second half collapse…..

I like DD..
But i think it’s rime for him to go. Something has to change. The whole managerial staff is failing. There is simply too much NATURAL talent on this team to play this bad. He needs to stop being loyal to his staff and fire some people. Otherwise, he’s going to be the one on the scrap heap.

Anyone have any splits with RISP since the ASB?
It has to be absolutely horrendous.

.271 overall with 230 hits and 105 runs scored

I never watched again after the rain delay
And although I shouldn’t be surprised, I was sort of shocked to see they couldn’t score a single run with guys on second and third with zero outs. That seems hard to do.

Oh
And I thought Melmo deserved to be on the ballot…granted I still would not have voted for him.
by Johnny_S on Aug 11, 2009 8:39 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Wait, what?
He was on third base with nobody out in the 7th and failed to score on TWO STRAIGHT fly balls. The second one, he was halfway down the line when the ball was caught. Gary Thorne tore into him, pointing out that if the ball dropped and he was close to the bag, he still would have scored. There was no reason to try to get a jump there. Then he got doubled off on a liner for the last out of the game. It’s the same old shit with Melvin, and I’m ready for him to go.

That was stupid.
But he wouldn’t have scored on either of those if he had tagged and gone. But it was REALLY stupid. That’s baserunning 101.

Never said I wasn't ready for him to go...
In fact I cannot stand Melmo. He was the only multiple hit guy in the line-up with 3 hits. I said I wouldn’t vote for him, but he had a good night at the plate.

We always knew
that this year would be ugly, very ugly. I can’t wait for spring training in 2011.
by BaltoBen on Aug 11, 2009 10:21 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't know about that.
We knew the pitching was going to be awful, but I don’t think anybody expected the offense to be this terrible.

On the bright side
The longer term pieces (Scott, Reimold, Markakis, Jones, Scott, Roberts) have held their own for the most part, although they’ve all been streaky.
The real suck has been brought by guys that wewren’t exactly integral to the plan (Huff, Mora, Wigginton, Andino, Izturis).

The rain delay kiled any momentum the O's hade
I also felt like I was in the middle of a hurricane standing in the concourse.

They bat like shit and swing at shit with RISP.
