I can only imagine..

This is how Rays fans must have felt a few years ago with all the silly blunders and lack of discipline this team shows. That is why I try and remain positive. Our franchise and fans haven’t ever really dealt with a true “rebuilding” year for as long as I can recall. Sure we may have had what we called “rebuilding” but we never had the talent up or coming up that we do now.

The team is not well coached and on most nights lacks the enthusiasm you would like to see, yes. But I’ve also seen plenty of games this year that they fought back after even the most diehard fan mailed it in. I will take a resilient team trying to find it’s identity over a team that rolls over anyday. Everyone complains about RISP and blunders. I don’t think we should worry quite so much sometimes when you look at the lineup and see Huff protecting Markakis or Andino protecting Wieters. I’d love to see the splits on someone like says Reimold when Zaun/Cesar/Mora bats behind him.

Personally, I still blame the last 12 years on that little punk. The Os and yankees were both on the upswing and that series loss crushed the spirit of the franchise. After that, we’ve had to deal with personnal blunders left and right from mismanagement of our minor league system to contract blunders. Until we find our identity, the mistakes of years past will haunt us. For us as fans (and I don’t really feel that this applies to most of us here), there is reason for excitement and I honestly feel our loyalty will pay off in the long run—- patience is a virtue.

(yes we’ve had patience for years, what’s one or two more with competent front office personnel going to hurt us(by competent I’m NOT looking at you angelos))

Personally I blame everything that goes wrong in my life on Jeffrey Maier

A baseball game? Sure. But why not also when i fail a test, or get a parking ticket? He’s responsible for all of it.

Meh

Roch just posted the lineup. Pie in LF, batting second. Scott at DH. Reimold sits. Either Nolan is more banged up than anyone is letting on, or DD has some splainin’ to do.

Pie's due for a game, but I think Luke might need an extended stay on the bench

Give him the rest of the week off to get his head right. He’s obviously not been able to hit his way out of the slump.

Nolan banged up from what?

He looked very good last night. Not sure why he isn’t getting the DH at least.

by Johnny_S on Aug 12, 2009 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions

That's what I'm saying

I’ve got no problem with Pie getting some ABs, but Reimold should DH. I thought that I’d heard some chatter about Nolan dealing with regular wear and tear, so I was suggesting that as a defensible reason to sit him. It just seems like they don’t play him as much as they should.

He has been kind of fragile in the minors

So maybe that’s what the concern is. But I’d still rather see him at DH than Scott.

Erbe?

Has anyone been following Erbe down in Bowie? I noticed after seeing the open thread yesterday that his stats have been beyond what anybody expected, yet I haven’t heard any chatter about him. Is there reason to doubt these recent numbers?

some love for Erbe

No. 5 BRANDON ERBE, RHP
ORIOLES

Brandon ErbeTeam: Double-A Erie (Eastern)
Age: 21
Why He’s Here: 1-0, 0.00, 8 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 SO
The Scoop: Erbe spent a month and a half on the disabled list with shoulder fatigue, which has limited him to just nine starts this season. Yesterday’s outing at New Hampshire was Erbe’s best of the season, as he threw eight no-hit innings before being removed in the ninth after throwing 108 pitches. Chris Tillman, Brian Matusz and Jake Arrieta tend to steal the spotlight when it comes to the Orioles’ young pitching, but don’t discount Erbe, who at 21 is already in Double-A.

Nobody should discount his ability, but the shoulder fatigue (and other injuries that have plagued him) are the biggest knock on him.

I have always thought the same about Erbe and the bullpen

But a starter is worth so much more than a reliever and a good starter is hard to find. Even the deepest pitching staffs always seem to run short on pitching eventually because of injuries. So like DH, give them every chance to succeed as a starter and then if necessary convert them to reliever because that is easier to do.

Also lots of pitching prospects wash out, so you try and get as many as possible and hope for the best.

I think we need to have an unusually high number fail to not have a surplus

They might not all be the top of the line starters we’re hoping for, but we should be able to put together a solid rotation with pieces left over. I think its going to be what we do with those extra pieces that really are going to define how successful this team is.

Quote from Samuel about the Roberts pop up
Samuel said he was watching the flight of the ball, never expecting Roberts to be running. Once he looked back, Roberts already had reached the bag.

“Every time the ball is hit, you try to find the ball. I’m looking at the ball, and next thing I know, he’s running by me,” Samuel said.

“It’s his call. You try to remind them how many outs we have, but they’ve got to be in the game. That’s when accountability comes into play.”

Roberts called the mistake “inexcusable” during his post-game interview on MASN.

Many fans have questioned whether Samuel yelled to Roberts. He isn’t allowed to tackle a player, though that might have been more effective.

“I did yell at him, but he went by me,” Samuel said. “You’ve got to know how many outs we’ve got. I remind them, but we’ve got enough scoreboards around here.”

Do I understand him to mean

That a baserunner on second is not his responsibility, so he is free to leisurely watch popups sail through the air while all hell breaks loose on the basepaths, because “they’ve got to be in the game”? So all that windmilling he does every time there is a runner on second and the ball is sharply hit to a left fielder with a cannon arm, that is, what? Tourette Syndrome? What a putz.

by fishoutawata on Aug 12, 2009 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions

UGH

Get outta here, Samuel. I’m done with you.

I also really don’t think he yelled at him. I was at the game, and while our seats weren’t RIGHT along the 3rd base line, they were close, and the whole freaking park fell completely silent when Roberts was running — it was all we could do to stare in horror — and I did not hear or see Samuel do anything.

i'm putting this in the open thread because the fan post was taken down again.

i didn’t read tomgugliotta’s post about brian roberts, but i can’t imagine it was any more negative or less insightful than the “Let’s get rid of Dave Trembley” fan post that’s been sitting over there for the last 4 days. why hasn’t anyone taken that down?

i’ve been coming to this site for a year and a half and i’ve really enjoyed the experience. i applaud the moderators for coming to the table with a set of guidelines to keep some sort of order in the room. and i cringe at some of the barely literate people who have joined the site recently and post idiotic rants.

however, i hope that the moderators are being careful with the way they enforce these rules. it’s a blog, not a tea party. negativity, especially in the midst of 12 straight losing seasons, is going to exist. roberts being lazy is a hot topic right now and not everyone reads through 800 game thread comments to find the discussion about it, so why shouldn’t he bring it up again? also, while i really hope we get to read quality prose for the most part, we should probably accept the fact that not everyone writing is an english major.

i also believe that it’s ok for tomgugliotta to question this decision in public. this is a public online community and i think it’s fair for what he wrote to be judged in front of the group if he asks for it. if the mods exercised good judgement in taking down what he wrote, they should be ok with discussing it in the open. again, i didn’t read the post, so i don’t know how bad it was, but i’m speaking generally here.

by joet on Aug 12, 2009 8:58 PM EDT reply actions

Is it really “lazy” when somebody forgets how many outs there are? I think it’s more of a brain fart or mental lapse, but it’s not an issue of a lack of hustle. He was on a dead sprint which, had he been correct about the number of outs, would have been unusual hustle since most players just jog on an infield pop up with two outs. Don’t confuse a mental lapse with laziness.

by O'sFan21 on Aug 12, 2009 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

so you're following me around from thread to thread now?

i could argue that he was mentally lazy on that play. he doesn’t run out ground balls because he’s given up on the play, and probably on the game and on the season. it takes effort to be focused. he displayed a lack of effort – he was too lazy to pay attention to the outs, think about the next play in his head before it happened, and react appropriately to the popup.

anyway, i don’t care so much about this play specifically. my problem with roberts is the frequency of which he’s seemed to not care much or be mentally in the game this season.

joe posnanski actually has a decent blog post about the royals quitting on their season. it’s a good read. i think he may have actually posted it on SI.com too.

by joet on Aug 12, 2009 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

No

What I do is keep track of new posts and see if they are interesting. You know…since I’m a regular here…rather than somebody who stops by to bitch and moan…

lol he’s giving up on the season??? That’s crazy! We’re only 25 games out!!

I’ll just have to disagree that forgetting how many outs there is displaying a lack of effort. People forget how many outs there are. Was the entire Red Sox team displaying a lack of effort when they all walked off the field after the 2nd out last week? They seem like two separate things.

If you have a problem with Roberts giving up on groundballs that’s perfectly fine, but THAT’S ALWAYS BEEN HIS DEAL. Don’t act like it’s some new thing because of how the team is doing this year. He has always jogged on sure-out ground balls.

by O'sFan21 on Aug 12, 2009 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions

i'm assuming you think i simply stop by to complain a few times a year

i’ve been logging in to the site 4 or 5 times a week for a year and a half. i read more than i post, but i’ve contributed several hundred times, so don’t get territorial.

i don’t think he hustled any more the first game of the season than the 100th, so being 25 out now is not the point.

the red sox displayed a lack of focus. i think lack of effort and lack of focus can sometimes come from the same place. sometimes they don’t. either way, i’m not impressed with roberts’ hustle OR focus this season.

maybe it just seems worse this year. maybe i’m more sensitive to it because there are young, impressionable talents in that locker room that we didn’t have before. i know he’s been like this for a long time – that doesn’t mean i need to like it. and this blog gives me the ability to express that point of view.

by joet on Aug 12, 2009 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Sorry

But the only time I recall seeing you post is to bitch and moan about something.

And you’re correct that this blog gives you the opportunity to express that point, but like you said you have to see both sides of the issue. To me at least that means that Roberts is a very good player, both offensively and defensively, but he has a tendency to not hustle on ground balls. My thing is that I can’t think of a single time where his lack of hustle has cost him (a grounder bobbled where he could have beat it if he were running hard or something) and I probably watch 75% of O’s innings every year. So, does it annoy me that he does it? Yes. But that’s the way he is, so you either like him or you don’t. You obviously don’t. I obviously do.

I still think the idea that Wieters or Jones or Riemold is going to see Roberts jogging on grounders and start doing it themselves. They’ve been playing baseball their whole lives – you don’t just change the way you play the game because some older guy on your team plays a certain way. I just don’t buy that.

by O'sFan21 on Aug 12, 2009 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions

i just don't think he's that polarizing

you don’t need to just like him or don’t, as long as you pick a side i generally like the guy, but i think our fans overrate him. some days i really like him. some days he drives me crazy.

anyway, the last thing i posted before this was a quick list of what i think our starting rotation will look like next year.

before that, i advocated trading roberts if we could get any of the players listed on the fangraphs untradeable players list. you should read it – i made excellent points! and i was very positive!

i probably post anti roberts more excessively than needed because everyone else has such a freaking hard-on for him. i’ve generally been a fan though.

That’s funny about hairston – I can’t really remember what I thought. I’d like to think that I was always a Roberts fan in that competition, but I really have no idea.

by O'sFan21 on Aug 12, 2009 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Here's the thing

His post was not removed because of his opinion on Brian Roberts. People are welcome to express whatever opinions they want as long as they do it in a manner that doesn’t make this blog look like it’s filled with idiots.

The Brian Roberts post was essentially one run on sentence. It had no capital letters, multiple spelling mistakes, and no analysis whatsoever, all of which are things that we’re trying to weed out here. I sent the poster a message explaining and requesting that he double check the guidelines and hang around our community to get a better feel for the way things work.

Even if he didn’t have so many capitalization and grammar errors that it made my head hurt to read it, it was still a short, non-analytical post that would be better served in the open threads, which is the reason they exist.

The bottom line is that most people only see 10 fan posts on their front page, and half of those are the ones on the recommended list. Posts that add no value to this website only serve to push the things worth reading off the front page.

fair enough

like i said, i didn’t get a chance to read it so i don’t know. i do think it’s worth pointing out that we’re depending on you guys to be fair and consistent. and when you simply pull the post off the page, it’s hard to judge that. i’m not sure of the solution – any chance you can deposit posts that aren’t worthy of a fan shot in the nearest open thread instead of simply deleting them? at least for first time offenders?

by joet on Aug 12, 2009 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

that's a fair suggestion

I don’t see why we can’t do that, at least for the relatively inoffensive posts.
