Angels (68-44) @ Orioles (47-67), 7:05 P.M.
Los Angeles Angels at Baltimore Orioles, Aug 14, 2009 7:05 PM EDT
The O's look to stay above .500 at home as they go into this series with a home record of 29-28. If I were a betting lady, I'd bet they will not be successful. Actually I am a betting lady, but I wouldn't bet against the Orioles. I wouldn't be FOR them either. I mostly bet on black 33.
Chris Tillman makes his fourth major league start after pitching just a heck of a game in Toronto last weekend. Tillman went 6.2 innings allowing just 2 ER on 4 H. The Orioles lost the game 3-2. Nothing makes me happier than seeing Tillman's name in the lineup, except maybe seeing Brian Matusz's.
Jered Weaver takes the ball for the Angels. Weaver is having a good year and has been the anchor of the Angels staff in 2009. He does give up runs, he's not unhittable by any means. He also is a fan of giving up the HR so hopefully the offense will be able to break out a bit and get Chris some run support.
Let's go O's!

I hope the national fan is enjoying his HD right now
Cincinnati-Washington? Is there any logic to MASN’s HD choices, or it is totally random?
Well, the Reds were supposed to be better this year...
but other than the big match-ups like the two NY teams, Boston, and maybe Atlanta there isn’t really any logic to it.

Not having someone cover prevents you from getting the out. But he needs to, you know, look to make sure theres someone there before throwing.
He overthrew Roberts

yes but
the knock on Pie is that he holds the ball too long. he shouldn’t have to check from left field that the first baseman didn’t go to get a sandwich. where the fuck WAS Huff on that play?

I've thought about this (too much)
All the scoreboard games seem to be a least a little corny, so I figured they would do progessively more difficult things until it got to something ridiculous that Joey would refuse to do. He could come up with some sort of a catch phrase to say once we reach that point.
what is a scoreboard game?

" I’ve changed my mind, i want Gathright to be called up. I’m envisioning a new scoreboard game, perhaps during one of the early innings. Something along the lines of "Can Joey jump over this?" You could could even tailor the things he jumps over to specific opponents or holidays.
Pie always ruins everything."

Is it just me or does it not really look like Wieters is trying to drive the ball?
It’s like he’s just slapping at it.
just a few days ago
He was killing it with no results, and now he doesn’t look to be getting good swings
I will lead these Peoples to the promised land, also known as "Slightly Ahead of the Blue Jays." ~WietersRunDry
But even then he wasn't uncoiling on the ball - just short quick swings
Which is good, but I’d like to see him drive the ball a little bit more. Maybe it would help if he got in a hitters count once in a while…

nope
mora’s job is to be available for the throw. textbook.
get one out first.
"The single best thing any rebuilding manager can do, ever, is trade a relief pitcher in late July for a couple of solid prospects."
— Rob Neyer, July 30, 2009
because that's letting the runner get too close.
he’s supposed to be a step or two off the bag to block the bag.
"The single best thing any rebuilding manager can do, ever, is trade a relief pitcher in late July for a couple of solid prospects."
— Rob Neyer, July 30, 2009
right - if you're receiving a throw, but wieters had already tucked the ball to tag him himself
at that point mora is just in the way in the baseline
and by the way I know how a rundown works…lol…
And also it's pretty obvious when Wieters committed to tagging him himself - at that point you cover the base.
Instead of standing in the way like he was. If the baserunner had run into him (like he should have) it would have been interference.
first of all,
wieters didn’t commit. he was about to throw to mora when the runner broke back towards home. at THAT point, witers switched hands and tagged him because he had too.
second, if the baserunner had run into him, he would have had the ball, because witers was about to throw it there and would have gone ahead and thrown it.
i jsut watched the whole thing in slo-mo on tivo. it was a pretty textbook rundown.
"The single best thing any rebuilding manager can do, ever, is trade a relief pitcher in late July for a couple of solid prospects."
— Rob Neyer, July 30, 2009
He didn't?
Looked to me like he took the ball from his throwing hand and put it into his glove hand, which is what you do when you make a tag.
If the baserunner had run into Mora, Mora would have had the ball? How???? Wieters was holding it.
my point is
he switched when the runner reversed course. it was a split-second thing. the runner broke back towards him and matt switched as a result.
re: mora: if the runner had continued to 3B, wieters, instead of switching hands, would have gone ahead and made the throw. and the throw would have beaten the runner.
"The single best thing any rebuilding manager can do, ever, is trade a relief pitcher in late July for a couple of solid prospects."
— Rob Neyer, July 30, 2009
I think maybe you were confused by my pronouns.
I was saying if he had run into Mora it would have been interference, since Mora did not have the ball.
no, i understood.
see above. i’m saying the ball would have gotten there. the ONLY reason the ball wasn’t thrown is that the runner broke back towards home, forcing matt to make the tag.
"The single best thing any rebuilding manager can do, ever, is trade a relief pitcher in late July for a couple of solid prospects."
— Rob Neyer, July 30, 2009
but hey, let's keep talking about this. ;)
"The single best thing any rebuilding manager can do, ever, is trade a relief pitcher in late July for a couple of solid prospects."
— Rob Neyer, July 30, 2009
You can still fit the whole subject on one line
Its gone on too far once theres only 3 or 4 words per line.
If there was enough time for Wieters to have gotten Mora the ball then there was surely enough time for Mora to get to the base.
sigh
are you even watching the replay?
MORA HAD TO SEE THE BALL GO TO THE OTHER HAND FIRST. only then had matt committed. as matt applies the tag, mora starts to see the runner from third, who is practically sliding into him. he’s a foot from the bag, matt is about 5 feet from the bag and charging towards it. there is no way, no way in hell, mora could have backed up lowered his glove for a tag and prepared for a throw in the time between the first runner being tagged and the second runner sliding in.
i don’t want mora on this team, but he did nothing wrong on that play.

I will lead these Peoples to the promised land, also known as "Slightly Ahead of the Blue Jays." ~WietersRunDry
I was talking about this with someone today
I’m not sure I know how to handle it once this team gets good. I was barely old enough to remember the mid 90’s, I’ve completely grown to assume the orioles are always going to be awful.
I remember it
I went to playoff games in 96 and 97, but if I’d only known the future I would have paid so much more attention to everything. 97 was my freshman year of college and I was so busy being in college that I sort of slacked off in my fandom.
I will lead these Peoples to the promised land, also known as "Slightly Ahead of the Blue Jays." ~WietersRunDry
I was 10 in 96
I vaguely remember watching those playoff games (except for Jeffrey Maier, which I remember very clearly), but was too young to appreciate it. By the time I was old enough to really understand what was going on, we were terrible.
I was a year younger
I don’t like vividly remember it all but it really was special for me. I am very sad I never got to any playoff games but a nine/ten year old’s disposable income just does not support it.
it's a totally different feeling, and a totally different fandom
when i was growing up, the orioles were the class of baseball and the envy of the bigs.
media was a little different then, of course, but every year you knew the orioles would be in it, and every game they were a tough opponent.
you really looked forward to EVERY SINGLE GAME. there was none of this dread.
i’m looking forward to getting back to those days. wish my dad could have seen some of this turnaround, he would have loved it.
