O's acquire Rhyne Hughes from Zaun waiver deal
Looks like we got the better portion of the deal to me. We get Rhyne Hughes, a 25 year old first base prospect who has had great success in the minors in return for Gregg Zaun, a 37 year old backup catcher. Another good move by McPhail.
Here are some of his numbers from Triple-A:
BA: .313
OBP: .361
15 homeruns
46 RBI's
In 58 games. Not too bad!

that's a fair point.
but unfortunately, if I FP the fanshot, it will be buried, as I can’t edit its publish date. But I CAN edit the publish date on a Fanpost, so this one goes up.
Hat tip to j.q. higgins for breaking it first.

Eh
Doesn’t really look like anything of worth, but for Zaun, I guess this guy is worth a shot.

Cheap DH/1B type, I can deal with it.

Yuck
Rhyne Hughes is a terrible buy here. His numbers are an illusion. His minor league strikeout rate is 30%, that’s way too high. He’s not good enough for the majors and is just filler for our AAA team. We’d be better off with Oscar Salazar.
Maybe he's filler
so we can call up Snyder in September? You wouldnt want to leave a team that actually still has some shot of making the playoffs high and dry, would you?
Matt Wieters can get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop in under one lick.
maybe...
but i thought that was michael aubrey’s role.
at this point, i really wonder if they’ll approach scott about playing some first.

For Gregg Zaun?
He’s a fantastic buy, in that he’s not a 40 year old catcher

Gregg Zaun is better than Chad Moeller… and we just traded major league depth for minor league depth… even a damaged propsect would be way better
Gregg Zaun thought he should start more often
Gregg Zaun is most certainly not better than Matt Wieters.

I like it for the competition it forces on Snyder.
Just because you know how to read, doesn't mean you'll like the book.
Hmmm
2009 Stats G Bavg OBP SLG HR RBI SB R 2B

So I guess we’ll see if he’s having the best season of his life, in which case we got fleeced, or he’s finally figured out how to hit, in which case we got a good deal. But I don’t see him talking walks (who has a BB/K of 0.18?!?) so I’m gonna predict fail.

If this deal ends up having any significance
I’ll eat my hat.
Seriously, though, if Zaun propels the Rays to the playoffs or Hughes ever does anything significant for the O’s I’ll eat my hat.
how about that PH grand slam?
that was the difference in a game that pulled them a bit closer to the wild card. If they get in by a half game or something, you better provide pictures.

well...
was it mentioned that pipkin wears hats made out of bacon?

Hear hear!
They must make a mint in merchandising.

And the fact that they're named 'Biscuits'
I have half a mind to make the 4 hour drive up to see a game just for kicks.

He looks like
a mix between those old school McDonald’s charecters (fry guys, hamburgaler, mayor mccheese, grimace, etc…) and the geico money stack. Oh, and cookie monster.
Matt Wieters can get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop in under one lick.
which makes me wonder...
if c being for cookie really IS good enough for him.
