MacPhail: Trembley's job safe through season -- baltimoresun.com
Even if the Orioles' second-half swoon continues, president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said Friday that manager Dave Trembley's job is secure through the end of the 2009 season. "I have no intention of making any changes in-season," MacPhail said. "We'll address the option when the year ends."

Mike Scioscia bugs
Scioscia did not think it was necessary for Felix Pie to apologize after the Baltimore Orioles outfielder punctuated his hitting for the cycle Friday night with a celebration Pie acknowledged was excessive.

“He was excited; you don’t hit for the cycle every day,” Scioscia said. “I didn’t really give much thought to it, but if he feels he went overboard with it, fine. It’s not an issue.”

Really? Then what was with the daggers coming out of your eyes for the rest of the night and the brush back pitch from Lackey the next day? At least say what you actually think, buddy.

Slots...

That casino land is at “Gateway South”, which the city has been investing a lot of time & money into redeveloping as the unofficial welcoming inroad to the city. That particular parcel, I believe, was to be developed into a ginormous sports complex by a group headed up by Ray Lewis.

So I’m curious as to what happened with the sports complex – did it die? I remember seeing pretty elaborate plans for that location that didn’t involve neon signs & gambling.

From the Land of Pleasant Living...

Also curious...

…how is a huge slots facility next to Camden Yards supposed to save the horse racing industry?

"Whether your name is Gehrig or Ripken, DiMaggio or Robinson, or that of some youngster who picks up his bat or puts on his glove, you are challenged by the game of baseball to do your very best day in and day out. That's all I've ever tried to do."

by spike2131 on Aug 17, 2009 9:22 AM EDT up reply actions

A percentage of slots revenue (ostensibly) goes into purses for horse races

I forget the exact percentage, although it was all spelled out in the text of the state constitutional amendment that was passed by the voters in 2008 (though the percentages are subject to change at the whim of the General Assembly). The theory being that more money for horse racing purses will lead to better racing and more gambling at the tracks. And hopefully some measure of revitalization for the horse farms of Maryland.

There was a lot of effort put in by slots proponents to sell them as being some kind of panacea to budgetary woes, both for the state itself as well as the horse racing industry. Enough people bought into that to allow the amendment to pass. I feel like this was misguided at best. Events in the interim have kind of revealed this for the farce that it is. The economy hammered us with budgetary woes anyway and there were a total of six bids for licensing (for five slots locations explicitly delineated in the amendment) and one of these was thrown out because the developer refused to pay a fee to put in the application. So much for the virtues of competition.

I don’t have any particular moral opposition to gambling in general or slots in particular. If casino gambling was legalized in Maryland I’d probably go wherever they put up a casino and lose some money playing Texas Hold’em every now and again. I do feel like the “slots = save us all” stuff was misguided optimism at best and an intentional on-the-side payoff of monied interests at worst. I think if they really wanted to save the horse racing industry they should just have done away with the middle step of slots and go for some direct subsidies.

That would be a tough sell in a hard budgetary time, but I think enough people in Maryland are proud of the horse racing tradition that they could get behind it as a feel-good kind of thing. I’ve never been to Pimlico or Laurel or wherever but driving through Greenspring Valley is something else. It would be a shame if all those farms are gradually eaten up by suburban sprawl.

It improves the gateway into the city.

Really? Some real honest to goodness business would improve the gateway into the city. Something like biotechs or some up and coming green technology center would improve the gateway into the city. Gambling is the irresistible chance at “easy” money. I don’t want to moralize, but I find it depressing. Best I can think is I guess it will provide some service jobs.

I don't have any issue with gambling

I’m not a fan of slots, but there’s nothing wrong with it. I just prefer it as more of a destination activity. Like, you drive to Charlestown, you drive to Dover, you drive to Atlantic City. I don’t know why they couldn’t have made it that way in Maryland as well. Put the slots at the racetrack and maybe have one place that people take a trip to where they can play some slots, maybe have some other entertainment there as well. I’m not really interested in stopping by the slot machine on my way home from work.

I didn't think I could still be surprised, but that got me

I feel like this is the violation of one of those sacred understandings that you come to have as a Baltimore area person. Everybody “knows” there is a certain set of problems and some of those bleed out into the suburbs, but it’s like you can write them off because you still know you can go downtown and you’re not going to get shot at Harborplace or at the Light Rail stop after an Orioles game.

How long before the nightmare scenario of a gang gunfight breaking out in such a visible location? You would think it unfathomable, but apparently they are rolling in and packing heat presently, so who the hell knows any more?

They didn’t sign Aaron Crow last year b/c he wanted $4mil and they offered $3.5 mil…I think that’s dumb on Crow’s part. He still isn’t signed this year and if he goes back to independent ball he’ll have already lost over $500K. I’d like to see Strasburg go unsigned and then have his arm taken off by a pitbull. Troy Patton shut down for year

Left-hander Troy Patton, who is on Triple-A Norfolk’s disabled list with arm fatigue, probably won’t pitch again this season, said Orioles director of development David Stockstill.

Patton, who missed the 2008 season after shoulder surgery, has thrown 108 innings combined at Double-A Bowie, where he was 6-2 with a 1.99 ERA in 11 starts, and Norfolk, where he was 1-3 with a 6.45 ERA in nine starts.

"That’s a pretty good load in the first year after surgery," Stockstill said. "As he gets tired, we’d rather not push it and go any further."

 Felix Pie is adorable

Pie said he didn’t get to sleep Saturday morning until about 3:30, fielding text messages and phone calls from friends and family. Chicago Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano, New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano and Florida Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez were among those who contacted Pie.

He said he spent an hour talking to his best friend in the Dominican Republic.

"He cried, man, and he made me cry, too," Pie said.

Pie received Friday night’s lineup card as a souvenir, and hitting coach Terry Crowley presented him with the ball he hit for the triple. Pie asked Crowley, who has become his mentor, to sign it.

"I said, ‘I appreciate you because everything I got wrong, you fixed it. Thank you,’ " Pie said.

He's an easy guy to like

Maybe it’s just because the team I follow has been in shambles so long that I don’t know anything else, but I’m just so used to guys who bitch and moan about their role on the team if they’re not out there starting every day. Jay Payton bitched, Melvin bitches when he’s on the bench more then he likes, it’s always this me first attitude, and Felix displays none of that.

When he was traded they stuck him out in left field when he’d always been a centerfielder and he had his troubles but he worked through them. Then he got stuck on the bench even though they’d said he’d be out there regularly to see what he could do, and he just did it. He continues to work his ass off and he tries his hardest when he’s in the game and shows emotion and determination and never says, “What about me. I was supposed to be given a bigger chance.”

I just love that kid.

Andy Seilers write-ups on the two draftees just signed
11. Michael Ohlman, C, Lakewood Ranch HS (FL), #326 overall, 6’4’’/205: I’m a bit higher on Ohlman than some others, as I think he has the natural tools to stay behind the plate, and he’s developed the skills there, too. He’s still got some learning to do, but I think he could be a plus defender there. At the plate, I like the fact that he makes good contact, and his power should play. There’s no reason to think that there’s not a starting catcher in his toolset. This is a great pick for both talent and draft position, as Ohlman was speculated to be a first day candidate. However, he might not be signable, as it could take $1MM+ to get him away from Miami. That will be tough, but the Orioles might have saved enough for it with the Hobgood deal. DOB: 12/14/90. Commitment: Miami.
28. Kyle Hoppy, OF, Orchard Park HS (NY), #836 overall, 6’0’’/195: Hoppy’s probably got a better chance of starting on the football team at Bucknell next year than sporting a pro baseball uniform. I didn’t even follow him this spring, and I don’t think I’ve seen him on any other follow lists either. Interesting name to watch if you like two-sport athletes, though. He hasn’t signed. DOB: 5/8/91. Commitment: Bucknell (FB).

We have signed a lot of tough signs later in the draft this year. Lets hope this strategy pays off, then again it only takes one or two of them becoming ML players in order for it to pay off, so it seems like a good strategy to me.

Re: Jeff Ballard

It’s plenty relevant, zk. After all, he played well for one early round and then ran out of steam. Once an Oriole, always an Oriole, I guess. ;)

Vick

Taped it, probably won’t get to watch it till the weekend.

I’m an Eagles fan, and I don’t like this move because of the controversy it brings to the team, and I don’t think it’s worth the distraction as purely a football move for the Eagles, though I can see the point of “He’s served some hard time, he deserves another chance.” It’s the first time in Vick’s life it seems where there’s really been a negative consequence for one of his indiscretions.

It’s hard to tell if he’s sincere about being sorry, because he’s being coached to say exactly what one should say in his shoes. (I thought Reid and Lurie’s interviews on Friday — and Donovan McNabb’s the night before — were a lot more interesting than Vick’s).

Lurie is very PR conscious and does really try to keep the team involved in the community, so I really think/hope they stay on Vick’s case about working with animal and other charitable causes.

I think for the Vick signing will work out ok if:
1. If he keeps his nose clean and does good work going forward, even if it’s only because the Luries are nagging him.
2. McNabb really is on board with this. It’s hard to tell because McNabb’s from the Andy Reid school of “give really generic meaningless answers to the media”, but I think he truly is onboard with this. When they drafted another QB in 2007, he said the right cliche, but then promptly had his own rogue press conference set up by his PR people.

In general, I think I’m going to get sick of talking about Vick very quickly.

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

So Brian's Bash was yesterday.

Been lookin’ at a few pictures, and boy did Brian have a nice bunch of teammates come join him last night. So far I’ve seen Wieters, Tillman, Matusz, Markakis (even with his walk/run), Jones, Scott, Huff, Guthrie, and Baez.

Tough part of the season

I’m not talking about the swoon and the 8-21 record since the AS Break. Nor am I particularly thinking about the fact that the O’s 93 OPS+ puts them near the bottom of the AL. Likewise, their ERA+ of 90 puts them two points off the bottom of the AL. They pretty much suck at all facets of the game. I don’t think MacPhail envisioned this level of play. Whatever, all of this is par for the course for an Orioles fan.

What is tough for me is the fact that the O’s are now entering the end of the season where they play games against the Rays (10), Red Sox (5), Yankees(6), and have a three game set with the Rangers. I just find it hard to root against the Rays and Rangers because I would rather see them in the playoffs instead of the other teams in the hunt. I just can’t watch games where an O’s loss can be rationalized as acceptable since it helped some other team. At the same time, it’s no fun watching them do their usual flop against the teams you’d rather see out of the playoffs. That urge to just stop paying any attention other than looking at box scores the following morning is coming on strong.

Non sequitur

If Mark Teixeira had Joe Mauer’s RBI percentage, he’d have 111 RBIs right now.

I'm very interested in seeing Luke at 1st tonight

but sadly there is a meaningless Giants game on at 8 that probably means more than the O’s regular season game. Does that make sense? In any event, looks like i’ll catch the first 3 innings and then onto football land.
