I don't understand walking away from 8 figures

Seriously

8 figures is enough to retire on at any age. Therefore i dont know how you can turn it down.

Why not make this move before Monday night's game?

We certainly could have used a fresh arm. I wonder if there would have been logistical problems getting Kam to Baltimore in time. Oh well.

Either Schmuck or Roch said

that Mickolio had just pitched the on the 16th so they wanted to give him a day between. Although I looked at his game log and he just pitched 1 inning on the 16th and didn’t pitch the 14th or 15th so who knows.

By the way

Whats up with Hernandez? In his last 4 starts he has given up 8HRs and in his 8 games before that he had only given up 4 HRs. Has he been hanging out with Guts too much? Or is out pitching coach teaching bad things to these kids?

i think its more of he really only has a fastball

and generally you need to throw more than that to get people out

by twistedlogic on Aug 18, 2009 9:10 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I thought his change up was his worst pitch

as it doesn’t have that much movement.

His fastball and his curveball are his best pitches but he tends to pitch up in the zone which is why he has so many fly ball outs. So if his location is off at all the game can turn into a hot mess in a hurry.

Maybe he should back off the speed a bit and work on his control and pitch location. I thought after his last game with 6Ks we were going to see him emerge. I suppose he did give up 2HRs that game and was just lucky no one was on base.

So what is up with Jones?

His post AS numbers have been pretty bad for a budding star.

After a good start – pre AS
BA: 303 OBP: 357 SLG: 481 OPS+: 123
he’s followed up with
BA: 244 OBP: 293 SLG: 463 OPS+: 95

It’s a story that hasn’t gotten much air time (to my knowledge). Jones struggles with anything that curves. I guess I’m not surprised that the veterans have tanked it. But Jones, Markakis, and Wieters are supposed to be the core of the future, besides the pitching. Wieters needs to get a season under his belt. Jones has that and I’m not sure how concerned we should be.

by drj on Aug 18, 2009 9:39 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It hasn't been the entire 2nd half

More like he’s been SO cold over the last 13 games that it makes his entire 2nd half line look mediocre. In the past 13 games he’s hitting .179/.217/.286 with a double, a triple, and a HR. He’s walked 3 times and struck out 8. Before that, in the 16 games right after the break he hit .299/.356/.612 with 3 2B and 6 HR. So it’s really more of a 13 game slump than a 2nd half slump.

He does have problems with breaking stuff but he’s gotten better since last year and hopefully he’ll continue to improve. He’s always going to strike out a lot; that’s just who he is.

In the beginning of the

season, Adam seemed extremely focused on laying off “junk”…he just would not offer at pitches (particularly curve balls) out of the zone. I think he has lost a bit of that focus and has returned to his semi free-swinging ways. Goes to show that even the brightest and most energetic of young players can be worn down by consistent losing.

And just for the record, I completely disagree with the call-ups made recently. Chris Tillman should have finished the year in AAA, and Brian Matusz should be in Norfolk now. It seems that the philosophy of not rushing our prospects went completely out of the window for some reason. I would rather see our useless AAAA players (Pauley, Waters, etc.) filling this time than watch our youngsters lose more confidence each day. I think that the front office did it in an attempt to drum-up fan interest during an otherwise horrible season and I can only pray it doesn’t backfire in the near future…

by sickuvitall on Aug 18, 2009 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree with pretty much all of this

I don’t know that he’s worn down by losing. He doesn’t seem to be. More likely it is his natural inclination to hack away and he has to work constantly at it and from time to time he will slip back into his old patterns.

As for the young guys, I don’t know why you think they are losing confidence. No matter when you brought them up they were going to struggle. The difference between good major league hitting and good AAA hitting is huge.

It is hard for us

as fans to truly understand what the grind of a bad season can be like for a ball player. I really believe that Adam and many of the other people who have been there all year (and in years past) have to experience some type of late season let down.

To say that the youngsters were going to struggle no matter when you brought them up is one of the largest assumptions I have ever heard.

by sickuvitall on Aug 18, 2009 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think it's expected

that when a younger pitcher comes up there will be a period of adjustment required before he reaches his stride. Look at the rookie pitchers who’ve made their debuts this year: Hanson, Bergesen, Porcello, Brett Anderson, Cahill, Zimermann, etc. All had great minor league numbers, and with the exception of possibly Hanson all have struggled at times at the ML level. Bergy has come along nicely but he had some real clunkers to start. And as for Hanson, yes he’s very very good but I’d argue that he’s probably been helped by the fact that of his 13 starts, 8 of them have been against losing teams and one of the winning teams is the Giants who can’t hit to save their lives. Even so, he would be the exception for 2009, not the rule.

Time will tell if any of those pitchers will have long term success, but the fact of having a period where they struggled and had to make adjustments is legit, and I’d bet you’d find similar numbers if you looked in past years.

I’m not saying you can’t rush prospects; of course you can. I just don’t think that their confidence is what we should be worried about.

i agree with most of that

minus the “worn down by losing” part. you have to hit well to win. however “slipping back into his old patterns” is not a good excuse.

maybe the young guys arent losing confidence, but they sure aren’t looking so good to me right now.

by twistedlogic on Aug 18, 2009 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, it's not a good excuse

But it’s a viable reason other than this alarm that people are constantly sounding about how the players don’t play hard when they’re losing.

by Stacey on Aug 18, 2009 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i'd rather it's the latter

first of all, i don’t care what anyone says, it’s obvious there is some sort of morale decrease every year down the stretch, and it’s also obvious that that morale decrease leads to uninspired play. how much it’s there can be debated, but the fact that it exists can not.

second, while i don’t wish the players would phone it in some of the time in august, i’d far rather that’s the explanation than, “adam will slip back into his old patterns if he doesn’t work at it constantly”. because that would mean he’ll never really grow out of it in his career.

winning games with better personnel can curtail the august tailspins (just compare the red sox from the 70s and 80s to those of today). but a player who can’t make good habits permanent is going to be a disappointment.

Fair

However, when I said “work constantly at it” I really meant at this point in his career. I guess I wasn’t clear. And I agree that losing takes a toll but it seems to me that some people cling to that like it’s the reason for everything.

He's tailed off a bit longer than the past 14 days

I’m not going to try to cherry pick time frames. Just looking at baseball-reference, his past 28 days (one of their splits) have been a struggle. The one possible bright spot is his BABIP is .235 over that stretch, and that should get better. I do recall a MASN quip where they stated that Jones himself said he was being too aggressive.

I guess I’m just pining to see some power in the future lineup. Deep down, I don’t believe that MacPhail and Angelos will really splurge and “buy the bats”. I take “buy the bats” to mean they’ll hope to get lucky with another 2008 Huff type of signing, not a real masher.

by drj on Aug 18, 2009 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well sure

It’s easy to pick any timeframe to suit the purpose, because any one or two bad or good games tacked onto the end of a time frame won’t affect overall numbers much. I actually looked at his game log and after the AS break his OPS went up pretty steadily until from the first game back against Chicago until it hit .860 (16 games), then it’s been going down since then, currently at .816. So there was some method to my breakdown. But to deny he was super hot coming out of the AS break is absurd.

I think

He’s gotten away from thinking about right center. When he was going good he was driving balls to right and right center, but now he looks awful pull-happy to me (even in situations where going to the right side would really be helpful). Hopefully he’ll pull out of it.

I hope it’s not that he’s swinging for #20 (I think I was the one who brought that up – I heard it on the radio).

Killing time by reading Roch's blog comments

Here’s one frustrated, reasonable voice in the wilderness:

Roch,

Is it just me or is everyone that comments on this blog retarded? People seem to ask the same questions daily and typically try to point out faults with people and exploit simple comments from you. People have to find problems and complain with anything that they can find. Kyleproboller up there is complaining because they actually signed their second round pick? If they didn’t he would be on here saying how terrible Andy and Joe are for not getting this done. I don’t know how you do it Roch, but these people would drive me insane.

And I’ve seen him comment at least once on someone else’s comment that he had to do a lot of editing just to make it family friendly. I don’t know why he takes the time; I would just delete it. But I do know the annoyance that comes along with people complaining that you’re squashing their right to free speech from this blog, so maybe it’s just easier for him to go along with it.

How much do you think 40 games of Aubrey Huff is worth? We got back an actual prospect, not some organizational filler BS that has no shot at breaking AAA. Based on Huff’s numbers this year and the fact that the Tigers got him for about 1/4th of a season, it was an absolute haul.

The NFL is more fun when Favre is in it. The retiring stuff is annoying, but I like watching him play (as long as its not on my team). Also, its not final until he passes a physical, but its about done.

I don't know that I can have....

…a meaningful opinion here – there is just no way to really know what the manager is doing in the clubhouse. We need to be stronger with our fundamentals, esp. the baserunning, and the lineups aren’t always optimal, but I’m with David Pinto in thinking that the difference between the best and worst lineups are usually pretty small.

But at the same time, I don’t know that there is anyone better than Dave out there, and the examples of Dusty Baker and Jerry Manuel demonstrate that we could do much, much worse.

And I think there is something to say for having some semblence of stability for team leadership.

i think trembley should stay.

he is way familiar with all these kids and at this point, that’s a plus. pick up his option year, reserve judgment for 2011. he should need to show some demonstrable progress for 2010, since he will have some decent pitching, and a lot of guys who were up this year should theoretically take a step forward.

i’m also leery of “dave must go!” rants. you can’t advocate for someone to go until you know who will replace him. in my mind, mazzilli, perlozzo, etc were far worse.

This

I mean, I’ve got certain beefs with DD, but until you have someone lined up and actually willing to take the job, you can’t just call for his head. I would have taken a 10 year old roast beef sandwich in trade for Perlozzo, but DD is doing well enough given the hand he was dealt.

Do I love the hit and run? No. Do I love the bunting? No. Do I think he’s 100% about winning? He’s no #4, for sure. I think all of those years in the minors groomed him for his current position, he’s great I think at dealing with adversity. I liked his funtamentals approach but it doesn’t seem to be working. I’d like to see someone better in his and Crowley’s positions, but until we actually find someone better, keep them there.

And I’d like to see what he can do when we actually are competitive. We’re still focused on development. With our pitching staff, we aren’t built to win.

take as an example

the extra-innings marathon game from sunday.

the O’s are down 4-0 after an inning and a half, but they come back.
they are down 8-6 in the bottom of the 8th, but they scratch their way back again. then they hang tough for 3 more innings before Albers serves up a shit sandwich.

do you think that kind of fight happens in 2005 or 2006? no way. trembley does not let these guys quit, and they play hard for him. i’m not sure i’d want to mess with that.

I think my big question is

why is this team so streaky and random? We sweep the Phils in their park, and get destroyed by the entire AL west. We’ll get 4runs in 3 games, then get 16 runs in one game. It seems like we suffer from bad momentum but can’t keep good momentum going. I feel that this falls under leadership.

To me, I can’t figure out if they’re fighting for 4th place or a high draft pick.

Also, I would like my manager to understand sabermetric principles.

Per Roch...
The Orioles have purchased the contract of Triple-A Norfolk first baseman Michael Aubrey, the former first-round pick of the Cleveland Indians who was acquired earlier this summer for, yes, a PTBNL.

Aubrey batted .287 with 13 doubles and 23 RBI in 44 games for the Tides and .290 with 29 doubles and 52 RBI in 101 combined games between Norfolk and Triple-A Columbus.

Aubrey was the 11th overall pick out of Tulane University in 2003. He will wear No. 9.

If you’ve lost count, Aubrey will be the 19th player to make his Orioles debut this season.
