Melvin Mora pops off to Amber Theoharis on MASN about the lack of respect the Orioles have been showing him by reducing his playing time (8/2/09)
Edit by Stacey: Looks like Melvin is putting the final nails in his own coffin. See the corresponding Sun article, with Trembley's response, here: Mora: Trembley Doesn't Respect Me

You have to be kidding me?
I’m speechless? Melvin, seriously?
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Bad link, Stacey
While I think that Mora is telling the truth in that he has battled through injuries and done well in the past, he has looked pretty done for a few years now.

Oh my god....
Since when did baseball become a charity? You put the best players on the field, period. Sorry, Mora…..

gotta side w/ dd on this one...
you can have a sense of entitlement when you can back it up w/ something, but melvin is toast. he is an adequate fielder at best, but even that may be charitable.

well
this is totally just a feeling by me and not based on anything, but I sort of felt for awhile that even though Melvin is bad, the O’s might pick up his option for next year while they wait on a long term solution. I think now any chance of that happening is gone.

We knew he was leaving after the season
Now I think he just might be leaving DURING the season.
If I was MacPhail, I’d DFA him tonight. I wouldn’t even let him on the plane to Detroit.

My favorite part is
“You don’t make the All Star team for nothing.”
Play like you did in 2005, Melvin, and you’d be out there every day.

I think that's what burns me most
He thinks he should play just BECAUSE he’s played for the last 9 years. He cites the conversation with David Ortiz when Big Papi said “Why are you hitting 7th? I’ve never seen you hit there.”
He’s hitting 7th because he’s batting .250 and his SLG % is 3 points higher than his OBP, that’s why. And he’s damn luck to be batting 7th.

This is professional baseball, where you very much can make the all-star team for nothing.

thats not fair
i bet his bunting skillz beat ANYBODY else on that all-star team…….

This is rich...
Mora said that a conversation during Saturday’s game with Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz further fueled his ire.
“He told me something like, ‘Why are you hitting seventh? I’ve never seen you hitting there,’” Mora said. He said something like, ‘You know what, I think I have the best manager in the world because he trusts his veterans.’ I said, ‘yeah, but Terry Francona has been in the league a long time.’ My opinion about this [situation] is it’s ‘what have you done for me lately.’"
Didn’t Terry SIT Ortiz earlier this year????

I've been a Melvin defender
but I think we’re about done. If you can’t manage your decline with a bit of grace, then goodbye and good luck. Play on, Wiggy—and time for Luke to get some reps at 1B.

Melvin
Why on freakin’ Earth would you say “Don’t compare me with John Smoltz, Josh Beckett, Jon Lester.” They are pitchers, you are not. They play for PHN, you do not. That is all.

I thought he was trying to say
that DD used him not matching up well against those guys as an excuse to sit him instead of just telling him he thought he was putting the best lineup out on the field with wiggy instead of him. I could be wrong, but that’s what I got.
The language barrier is still pretty bad with him. It was hard to figure out whether what he was saying was what he actually meant to say. There’s no way he really believes that just because he was an all-star one year that he should continue playing every day despite sucking. I mean if he does believe that, does he think that making one all-star team assures you a starting spot indefinitely???

that was my understanding...
but, really, there’s a bunch of guys out there that are probably as valuable as melmo in the aggregate (i.e. not very), but aren’t crybaby malcontents making 8 millions clams.

Another problem with Mora being a 2nd half guy
Is that Wigs is also a 2nd half guy.
by Timmy L. on Aug 2, 2009 10:24 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Another problem
Is that he’s not a 2nd half guy. Last year is the only year he was. You can look up the particulars on b-r.com, but here are his OPS splits by year (first number is first half, second number is second half):
2000: .787, .719
2001: .775, .567
2002: .794, .679
2003: 1.003, .592 (only played 21 games 2nd half)
2004: .989, .973
2005: .861, .779
2006: .768, .686
2007: .790, .704
2008: .686, 1.073
Career: .808, .765

Has Mora ever gracefully, quietly accepted a manager's decision to sit him out?
At this point the press knows that they can wave a microphone out of him and be he’ll piss and moan about lack of respect for his veteran status, guaranteed. I love watching him play third but I cringe when he gets interviewed.

Try throwing yourself on the ground like this and see if you arent thinking about barfing instead of making a perfect throw to first.

but watching him at the plate always makes me think about barfing. most times i do

I think Melvin Mora is done in Baltimore
I wish his family well. In my heart I know he is a good, kind person. He was the only active Oriole that attended Elrod Hendricks funeral. He runs numerous baseball clinics in and around Baltimore and gives of himself for charitable local causes.
But all the above does not equate to playing time when you are not producing. Melvin has not produced the last few years now. The last think any ball player sees is the end of their career. They think they can do it when they can’t.
We will have found memories of Melvin and he still has an amazing glove. Somebody may want a pinch hitter off the bench in the NL. I hope he pursues that.

Is that really true about Elrod's funeral?
That’s pretty fucked up if so.
I know he sucks this year, but he was pretty awesome last year (well mostly the 2nd half).
I obviously agree his time here is done though.
by O'sFan21 on Aug 3, 2009 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It was a pretty big deal the last time he was up for a contract extension
Melmo was indeed the only active Oriole to go to Elrod Hendricks’ funeral. A lot of people pointed to that as a sign that the Orioles needed to extend a guy who actually wants to be in Baltimore. At the time, I feel like that was the right decision, although the contract is certainly a bit of an albatross this year.
It’s kind of a shame that he can’t go out quietly and recognize that his best playing days are behind him. But I guess if you’re a professional baseball player who’s been in the major leagues for a decade, there’s a certain amount of pride involved. If only that pride translated into more than three home runs and 27 RBIs by August for a guy who spent most of the year hitting #5, we might not have to have this thread to begin with.

I wonder about the personal thing between DD and MM
because it seems to me that DD’s decisions concerning Melmo until very recently have been based entirely, unreasonably, on respect. God knows he did not belong in the 4-hole all that time based on performance. All the stuff he said aout himself may be true, but it shouldn’t make a hill of beans worth of difference. DD’s job is to try to win games, not to show deference to a veteran who has lost it. He still knows how to turn in those web gems, though.
