Wieters says that Zaun was a great influence
Which I expect is just PC shit anyway, and Zaun claims that he left Wieters on his own, which I don’t find a fault with anyway as Matt seems like an extraordinarily mature young man.
Anyway, if Zaun was actually a mentor, which he had to be, then I don’t get the trade.
We got nothing in return, and traded away our productive backup catcher from next year who costs nearly nothing.
I’m not too concerned as Zaun wouldn’t get much playing time next year, and the most optimistic 2010 projection is a 1989esque season, but the trade doesn’t add up for me.

Nothing in return?
I’d say we got a little more than nothing; a third baseman who has a legitimate chance at winning the job starting at third base in the near future. Give me that any day over a 38 y/o catcher who had no future with this team.

Bad timing but whatever
If he wants to go 2-4 with a double, a HR, and a GIDP every night I’ll take my chances. Like I said in the recap, that was his 4th GIDP this year in 534 AB. I tried to look at b-r.com to see how many times he’s been at the plate when a GIDP is a possibility, but if they have that stat I can’t find it. They have his stats with runners on, but not with less than 2 outs. If anyone knows where I can find that I’d be grateful.

either way you can't ignore
how his defense has declined. not just his occasional lapses in concentration, but his armstrength is pathetic. he still plays a damn good 2b, but he cant throw out anyone when he goes up the middle anymore, and i cringe everytime its going to be a close one on a doubleplay ball.

Can you give me an example? I think he makes plays up the middle perfectly, not relying on arm strength (although I think he has a fine arm) but a lightening fast transfer and release.
i mean
how bout the time he cost us the game against i cant remember who by just hanging out in shallow RF on one of those shifts and lobbing it over there non-chalantly allowing whoever it was to beat it out. ok, i know thats vague, but if you dont see a decline in his defense you are blind sir.

Any note on Bell's D lately?
"I feel like defensively and offensively, there’s not too much I can’t do right now."
But, I thought his D was sub-par and it sounds like he isn’t working to improve it. That worries me a bit.
I've heard conflicting reports on his defense
Initially when the trade was made, I thought the info was that his defense wasn’t good. But then just awhile ago I read that scouts voted him best defensive 3B in his league with the Dodgers (or something along those lines). I’ll try to find it.

I meant to say that
He could just be terrible against lefties, and switching sides won’t make much of a difference, and in fact, it could exacerbate the issue.
Many switch hitters who struggle mightily from one side don’t abandon their double dipping ways because going from RHB vs. LHP to LHB vs. LHP isn’t exactly an instant formula for success.

I love how that game story talks about how hitter-friendly the PCL is, as if that had much to do with Cabrera’s rough outing. Dude walked three and threw a wild pitch in one inning, in addition to those four hits (one of which was a grand slam)…sound familiar, baseball fans?

Actually, I just read that article
It’s crap. It’s a big fluff piece. It reads like something from Bleacher Report. The dude makes a ton of tired assumptions that the only way to win is to go spend like the Yankees. He doesn’t back up anything with facts or the like.
I somehow just lost the first half half of what I was going to post here, but in essence it was,
1) you can’t say the team is bad and ready to contend in the same sentence; and
2) if you’re going to rag on trembley, rag on the hit and run, not that he “doesn’t expect to win”; the teams of the last decade lost for having bad players, not because they didn’t have managers who “expected to win”. do you not remember Lee Mazzilli?
here’s what didn’t get deleted about the rest of the article:
Securing a top-line starting pitcher to anchor a talented young pitching staff would illustrate a commitment to winning. In recent years the Orioles have filled their pitching staff primarily with retreads while waiting for their "young guns" to mature. The "young guns" are now ready, but need a veteran "ace" to lead the way….If the Orioles don’t make a significant pitching move and are looking for Guthrie or one of the young pitchers currently on the team to be the staff leader, then it will be another long year for the Birds.
Based on what? Are you saying it’s impossible to contend without a “veteran ace”? How do you back this up?
There is no question that putting significant money into a starting pitcher is a little bit of a gamble. However, for the Orioles it would be one worth taking. This is a pitching staff that desperately needs a leader….The Orioles need someone like a Mussina or CC Sabathia, Johan Santana or Roy Halladay who grabs the ball every fifth day and makes things happen.
“Desperately needs a leader.” Because the Rays of 2008 went nowhere with without a wily veteran.
Even if they are not ready or able to spend the money on a pitcher like Halladay, at the very least the Orioles need to bring in a pitcher like Derek Lowe or Brad Penny who may not be a staff ace, but is a solid pitcher and can be expected to regularly pitch good enough for the team to win.
Why not see if John Smolz is available while you’re at it?
Josh Bell, who was acquired in the George Sherrill trade, could be the third baseman of the future, but is still in need of seasoning.
He’s actually kind of tearing it up right now.
However, if the Orioles are looking to contend, they will instead need to acquire a regular third baseman and then allow Wigginton to continue in his role as a role player, that is if he doesn’t now move over to first base with the recent departure of Huff to Detroit.
Here’s an idea. Let’s sign some like Chone Figgins to BLOCK Josh Bell. That way when we’re contending for the half-decade AFTER 2010, we can be stuck with someone who is in a decline instead of on the rise.
In closing, here are four single sentences, written as complete paragraphs, that are all massive generalizations which tell you nothing:
So, it is obvious that the off-season will be an interesting one for the Orioles as Andy MacPhail continues to orchestrate the future of the franchise.
He has made some great decisions over the last couple years and put the team in a position to eventually become a contender.
However, all will be forgotten if he cannot make the final moves that push the team over the top and back to contending in the AL East.
It is great to build for the future, but the time has come and McPhail needs to make the moves that illustrate to the Orioles and their fans that next year has finally arrived.
"The single best thing any rebuilding manager can do, ever, is trade a relief pitcher in late July for a couple of solid prospects."

Four burning questions
Can the O’s contend in 2010? Hahhaaaa.
They don’t have a strong pitching staff and are counting on kids to continue developing. That’s even if they bring in a veteran to “anchor” the staff. And to get your hopes dashed, Andy MacPhail has already said he doesn’t expect a string FA pitcher to consider Baltimore.
They are weak on the corners, and to be frank, the hitters that are supposed to be the core (Jones, Markakis, Roberts, Wieters (eventually?)) have not shown the ability to really mash. Markakis leads the bunch with a .308 (or so) average. They need to do better, as the O’s need more pop in the lineup. Being near the bottom of the AL in batting (OPS, OPS+, you pick it) is not going to get it done.
I’m not getting my hopes up for 2010. At the same time, 2010 is the year MacPhail, Schmuck, and anyone else spouting the line about “we expect to lose because we are rebuilding” has to stop. It’s a lame, loser mentality, mantra. 2010 has to be about Tillman, Matusz, Jones, Wieters, etc. actually starting to become the core of a decent team. Hopefully after 2010, MacPhail will have to make good on the “buy the bats” line (and I don’t want to see a Huff-like redux as the big bat).

Really now?
Frank was the first player to win MVPs in both leagues, a Triple Crown winner, and was 4th all time in HR before the roiders came into play. Oh, and he was the first black manager in the major leagues.
Barry Sanders was great, but come on.
"The United States is the New York Yankees of countries...powerful and respected until the year 2000." - Homer J. Simpson
He is 4th all time in HRs but he played what, 21 years? Barry is 3rd all time in rushing yards and played 10 seasons (Behind Payton 13 years and Emitt 15 years).
In 21 year career Robinson made the all star 12 of those years. Sanders made it all 10 years as a pro.
He won the NFL MVP (co) as a RB which a lone is hard to do. Then once you consider the fact that he played for the Lions who had a terrible offensive line and could barely throw the ball, it makes it even more impressive.
PS-being the first black manager has nothing to do with his playing days.

Barry
had THE single greatest season in college football history. Not that it factors in for anything…just sayin’.

no...he wore 21
I’m no OSU fan but there are a few guys that transcend the rivalry. Barry is one. Wayman Tisdale was one. The Boz’? Not one.

He has a son...
Barry Sanders Jr. that is either a Jr. or a Sr. at a private school here in Oklahoma City. He’s supposed to be pretty good as well. Although a little bit bigger than his dad.

Brown only played like 9 seasons
Dominant seasons though. Mike Schmidt or Frank Robinson over Brown.
Bench was awesome, but shared a number with DiMaggio, Greenberg, and Brooks. You could make an argument for any of them really.
Koufax was another short timer. I’d have a hard time deciding between him and Carlton.
Nolan Ryan over Olajuwon, but I’m no fan of basketball.
Bradshaw over Brady. Personal opinion only.
Dick Butkis over Ichiro. I’d love to see a cage match for the honors, actually.

I agree with Bradshaw over Brady (I’m a Steeler fan though)
Not Nolan over Olajuwon though. Olajuwon was a beast.

Cats are the devil.
I recently had a discussion about cats with some friends. They were described as having a “feeble and old” look and one guy wished they would “take a horse up in the mountains and never come back.” “Devil’s Minion” was tossed around as was the cat being an object of adoration by the ancient Egyptian’s who "were as much or more mathmatically advanced that we are and that bothers me. "

I hope that was in complete jest.
I want to see Melvin Mora cuddling a kitten
But there are 16 months and only 8 pictures so there’s hope yet.
When I first saw the Adam Jones picture I thought he had a little tiny dog and I was about to just burst from happiness, then I looked closer and realized his black dog was just blending in a little with his black t-shirt.

What would Melvin's kitten be named?
My top two choices are Bunt and Respect. Or possibly Tony Catista.

I sort of want to rename my cat Tony Catista, because that’s awesome. Although last year I wanted to rename my cat Randor Bierd and I never did.
I’d like Melvin’s kitten to be named Happy after his demeanor.

Cats are just different
I love both cats and dogs equally, but you can’t treat them the same way. Dogs will accept any kind of attention, while cats make you learn how they want to be pet/scratched. Once I learned what my cats liked, they were very affectionate and loyal.
The type of cat may also come into play
I never liked cats, but my sister has Hemingway cats (with the extra digits on their paws – it looks like they’re wearing mittens). They’re very personable and seem more affectionate than your typical cat.
"The United States is the New York Yankees of countries...powerful and respected until the year 2000." - Homer J. Simpson
I had two cats
only one remains. She’s 14 and really laid back, except around tiny dogs. Her sister was a “Hemingway”; she had six toes on each of her front paws and was just a great pet. She died a couple years ago :/
What we need to do
is trade for Omar Vizquel, who has pet kangaroos. Now there’s a calendar I’d buy.

Chris Lambert claimed from the Tigers
http://masnsports.com/2009/08/adding-to-the-inventory.html
They claimed right-hander Chris Lambert off waivers from the Detroit Tigers today and assigned him to Triple-A Norfolk.
Lambert was 0-1 with a 14.85 ERA in two games with the Tigers this season, and he’s 1-3 with a 7.90 ERA in 10 career games in the majors.
Lambert, 26, went 6-7 with a 3.55 ERA with Triple-A Toledo this year. He’s 40-41 with a 4.40 ERA in 142 career games in the minors.
The Cardinals selected Lambert in the first round (19th pick) of the 2004 draft.
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/08/orioles-claim-chris-lambert-from-tigers.html
Lambert, a 26-year-old righty, allowed 121 hits and 31 walks in 126.2 innings at Triple A Toledo, striking out 106. His major league ERA this year is 14.85 in just two appearances, but his minor league ERA is a quarter of that.
AAAA type or solid prospect? I know the Tigers are awash in pitching but I can’t imagine they’d let go someone with a whole lot of promise.
