RHP Chris Lambert claimed from Tigers

http://masnsports.com/2009/08/adding-to-the-inventory.html

They claimed right-hander Chris Lambert off waivers from the Detroit Tigers today and assigned him to Triple-A Norfolk.
Lambert was 0-1 with a 14.85 ERA in two games with the Tigers this season, and he’s 1-3 with a 7.90 ERA in 10 career games in the majors.
Lambert, 26, went 6-7 with a 3.55 ERA with Triple-A Toledo this year. He’s 40-41 with a 4.40 ERA in 142 career games in the minors.
The Cardinals selected Lambert in the first round (19th pick) of the 2004 draft.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/08/orioles-claim-chris-lambert-from-tigers.html

Lambert, a 26-year-old righty, allowed 121 hits and 31 walks in 126.2 innings at Triple A Toledo, striking out 106. His major league ERA this year is 14.85 in just two appearances, but his minor league ERA is a quarter of that.

AAAA type or solid prospect? I know the Tigers are awash in pitching but I can’t imagine they’d let go someone with a whole lot of promise.

19th overall selection in 2004

But his career has been disappointing to say the least as he’s been mired in AAA over the course of three seasons with only ten games in the majors.

Likely a filler, but no harm in taking the risk.

You're right in that there's no harm

Any live arm with options left isn’t a bad thing. I just wonder if Leyland didn’t have the patience to let him learn to pitch in the majors, given that they have a good staff. We should be able to use him at some point.

It looks like they tried to use him as a reliever at one point and it didn’t work out.

Oh yeah

I didn’t mean that he’ll stay in AAA for good as a filler, as he’ll probably get a shot, just that he likely will not cut it in the majors based on his career thus far.

FWIW

Rotoworld says

A great pickup by the Orioles here. Lambert, 26, has been awful in limited time for the Tigers out of the bullpen. However, he’s always been solid in Triple-A. For a team in need of pitching as the Orioles, this move makes plenty of sense. He might be in line for a couple starts come September.

Yes they are

It’s because they’re too far down that nobody scrolls through them. They’re still probably slightly more useful than the baseball site links on the left side. I just saw those yesterday for the first time

If you have a better idea

to keep the ridiculous things that were going on here not too long ago from happening, I’d love to hear it.

We had to do SOMETHING. If you’ve got ideas on how to improve it, use the e-mails links at the bottom. All suggestions will be read and considered.

It's the tragedy of the commons

I understand them but still am sad that they have to exist. Although I’m still a little arrogant enough to think that the guidelines don’t really apply to me or any of the other regulars. I’m sure in the very near future that I’ll be gently reminded that this is not the case.

You're such an arrogant Orioles fan

The guidelines apply to everyone, but most people don’t even need to worry about them because they’ve always behaved that way.

I think it’s important to realize that when we created those it was with the intention of preserving the way of life the older members are accustomed to, not changing it.

Taking a look over at fangraphs...

Shows that his FIP or fielding-independent pitching is around 3.15-3.20 at AAA.
When he’s been up with the tigers his BABIP has been at .389 when .300 is about average. Unfortunately he doesn’t seem to have adjusted to coming out of the bullpen because his homers have spiked as have everything else, particularly in the two games he played in this year. However he’s only pitched 27.1 innings in the majors with practically no defensive support. It’s very possible that when he adjusts to the bullpen he could become a set-up arm.
It may depend on how well he can prevent dingers at the MLB level. The past two years in the minors he’s given up under .6 per 9 innings but while in the cardinals system he was over 1 per 9. If the O’s can get him to keep the ball on the ground he should be very good

Probably will never amount to much, but it’s a good move. Orioles claimed Guthrie off waivers and that worked out pretty well. Occasionally you get lucky.
