20 years ago today pete rose was banned from baseball

But that shouldn’t stop him from being in the Hall Of Fame.

They talk about intergity and character and you know what, not every Hall Of Famer has those.

Point and case Tyrus Cobb. He was, racist, went out of his way to injure people, hated his own teammates and on multiple occasions he went in the stand to beat up anyone who heckled him.

Meanwhile Pete Rose who was just giving himself an added reason to hope for his team to win. Yes it’s gambling yes it’s wrong. But Ty Cobb did thing a helluva thing a lot worse.

It shouldn’t matter that he was banned form Major league Baseball, because the Hall Of Fame isn’t part of the MLB. It is independent from the MLB. The fact that hee was banned shouldn’t process into the vote.

He was without any doubt one greatest hitter in the history of baseball. Like I said that whole charcter is thing BS. It doesn’t seem to matter.

Pete Rose should in the Hall Of Fame. He did things on the field that less then one percent of baseball players could do.

For those reasons Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame.

ty cobb...

these things you say are true, but it should be noted that he made a shitload money from baseball and also from being a seed money investor in the coca cola corp.

he established a scholarship fund that still sends disadvantaged kids to college and donated 100,000 in to establish a state of the art hospital in his home town which became the cornerstone of the ty cobb health system, a private, self sustaining non-profit health org in georgia.

pete rose has really done nothing to rehabilitate his image and has still largely denied that he did anything wrong.

(i still think he should be in the hall, mind you…)

by duck on Aug 24, 2009 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Definitely not

I’d say that j.q. is probably just pointing out that there are two sides to every coin, most things aren’t black and white (no pun intended), etc. Cobb was a complex and possibly mentally ill man. I read Al Stump’s biography of him and it was fascinating. His mother shot and killed his father when Cobb was still a teenager (it’s believed that he had snuck into the bedroom after pretending to leave on a business trip, hoping to catch her in bed with another man). That’s gotta mess a guy up. Cobb also provided financially for former teammates and opponents who were down on their luck, such as catcher Mickey Cochrane.

I'd recommend it

Stump was actually Cobb’s ghostwriter for his memoirs in the early 60s, right at the end of his life. It took him 30 years to publish the second book, “Cobb”, which was the one I read. It’s got some amazing stories about Stump’s experiences with an old, dying Cobb; if things happened the way he claims they did, it’s amazing the author survived to tell about it.

Pete Rose who was just giving himself an added reason to hope for his team to win

What a load of horseshit. That isn’t all Pete Rose was doing.

Character comparisons don’t apply across such different eras: when Cobb was playing, baseball itself was racist; that doesn’t excuse Cobb’s behavior, but it also means that as a society we can evolve and learn from our collective history. So this tired argument that “character is BS because Cobb’s in the hall” (which you’re hardly the first person to make) doesn’t hold water.

Rose bet repeatedly on baseball (allegedly against the Reds as well—just because it wasn’t proven in a court of law doesn’t mean there isn’t substantial evidence to back this). He then lied about his actions and sued baseball for trying to uncover them. Then he agreed to the ban in return for baseball having no formal finding on him. After 15 years of denials, he decided to come clean to promote his book and timed his announcement with the announcement of that year’s HOF class. To this day has no remorse for his actions or for the tremendous the damage he has brought to the national pasttime.

Pete Rose did more to discredit that game than one-tenth of one percent of all baseball players. I’m glad he’s not in the Hall.

Exactly

Pete Rose was banned for breaking the rules. Ty Cobb, say what you want, did not break the rules. It really is as simple as that in my mind.

My biggest problem with Rose

Is that he kept up the lie for so long, and then basically profited when he came clean. I use to believe he belong in the Hall. I would have had alot more respect for him if he just fessed up and said he made a mistake.

With that said I think a lifetime ban should be just that. When Pete Rose dies he should be up for consideration for the hall. He was the all time hits leader and belongs in, he just doesnt deserve to see it in his lifetime. Same goes for Shoeless Joe.

by edsachs1 on Aug 24, 2009 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It ain't apples and oranges

The argument comparing and weighing vices does not hold water. i.e. cheating, gambling, drinking, doing drugs, beating ladies or what have you. Though Zk makes good points about Pete Rose’s general assholishness, him not being in the hall is not about a lack of character.
Here goes:
Baseball exists because fans watch it. Fans believe in it.
An allegation against a player for throwing a game in order to reap personal financial gain is the worst possible violation. It robs fans of their stake in the game. It robs them of their faith and belief.
Pete Rose has never come close to proving he did not engage in this activity. He should never be forgiven.

Pete Rose is in the Hall of Fame...

He just doesn’t have a plaque. I recently visited Cooperstown and was amazed at the amount of Rose material they had in the display cases (donated by Pete, of course). Memorabilia from both his Reds and Phillies incarnations. I agree with both sides of the arguments above and could go either way with Rose getting in. The kicker for me is that if they allow Roger Clemens to have a plaque they have to allow Rose to have a plaque. Period. Ditto Barry Bonds, McGwire, etc. I just read the book by the NY Daily News investigative team, American Icon, about Clemens and the other steroid/HGH/drug abusers running rampant through the record books and, as far as I’’m concerned, Clemens is as low rent as they come.

by Fred Sanford on Aug 24, 2009 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

First off

Gambling isn’t wrong. What Rose did was wrong because of his position, but gambling itself isn’t wrong. It’s awesome.

And one of the biggest beefs with Rose betting on his team (eventhough he supposedly never bet against the Reds) was that it jeapordized his ability to manage objectively. An example would be that he very likely risked the health of his pitchers by leaving them in games too long when he normally would not have done so.

filed of dreams (to me) is sort of meh. i mean both movies have a lot of overly sentimental content in terms of quantifying the mystique and lore of baseball, but bull durham catches the visceral side too and is also just damn funny and eminently quotable.

Sandlot

takes the cake for me. Hands down.

Others: Field of Dreams, Rookie of the Year, A League of Their Own, Majoir League.

There is another, I cannot remember the name of, that I liked. It was about a father and his child who go into witness protection and are moved. The kid had finished little league last year, but when he got his new identity it listed him as a year younger, so he got another year in little league. He ends up dominating pitching and hitting and takes his team to the little league WS. Great movie.

A totally guilty pleasure for me. Especially all of the cameos by major leaguers (Griffey, Palmeiro, Mickey Tettleton, etc.). The scene where a pissed-off Billy (main character) makes Berman look like a clown is worth your time.

Dating girls who were not fans of the Steelers and/or fans of opposing teams. Then when I ask them about their team they know nothing and refuse to watch Steeler games with me.

I think I could live with a fan of an opposing team for a while

I’ve never dated a girl who gave a damn about any sport, and in fact tended to be mocked for my passion about the Os and Ravens. My last girlfriend viewed sports as some “tool of the patriarchy” (to be honest, I stopped listening after a while). I wish I was making this up.

So in some ways any girl who has some passion for baseball or the NFL (preferably both) would be cool, even if it is a fan of the MFY or the PHN or the Patriots or something. But I’d probably sing a different tune if I actually dated one.

I don't think I would care....

I actually dislike every other sport than baseball – I find most of them boring (weird, I know). It’s totally cool that my girlfriend is an Orioles fan, and it’s really cool that she knows what I mean when I talk baseball, but I don’t know if I would care that much. Plus, she’s way more into football than me. Kinda funny, actually. I rooted for the Steelers against the Ravens just to tick her off, which also makes her really cute. :-) I really don’t care about football – it doesn’t interest me at all….

Agreed

I obviously really like baseball, so my girlfriend has been trying to get into baseball it. But when it comes down to it, I’d almost rather she didn’t – it’s like, sometimes she’ll ask “Who won the Orioles game?” but I know she really doesn’t care who won the Orioles game. She just wants to make conversation. I mean, God forbid that my girlfriend wants to talk to me, but I just don’t like it. It seems phony. I could teach her about it, I guess (blech), but if she’s gonna get into it, she should want to get into it on her own, right? Otherwise it’s me talking to her just for the sake of me talking to her.

July 29th What a GREAT day for pitching! Chris Tillman makes his MLB debut, and the Phillies get Cliff Lee, who just won a Cy young Award! SWEET!

I LOVE it

It is a great stadium and its fairly cheap. M, T and W you get a lawn seat for a $1. I do that and then just grab a seat anywhere. Plus theres the downtown playground my daughter loves.

That's another thing.

The money involved is just mind-blowing. I caught myself the other day saying that an additional $2,000 for a cocktail hour on the roof deck wasn’t a big deal. Then I was like “Wait what?”

I was best man at a $30K+ wedding last year

and my brother is having an even more extravagant wedding this November. Also gonna be best man.

It’s really a ridiculous amount of money to spend – I mean, just give me that money for a down payment on a house – but since it wasn’t my money, I enjoyed every cent. Weddings rule as long as you aren’t the ones getting married.

$6K, 6 nights in Jamaica, all the rum you can drink, do whatever you want, no entertaining…definitely worth it. Plus, I downed 5 beers at the bar before our ceremony. wore a tan suit with flip flps on the beach.

Was really awesome.

I felt a little bad b/c my mom was bummed for a few days but we came back and dressed up for a reception and she was good with it.

I mean, we laid around the beach for two days, got married, went horseback riding, climbed Dune’s river falls, rafted a river, went shopping, and didn’t have to coordinate with anyone.

See we thought about doing something like that.

With a small destination sort of thing and then a reception back home, but if you’re going to have a reception anyway how’s it really any different? That’s what costs all the money…

by O'sFan21 on Aug 24, 2009 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Our reception was really small…no alcohol, come and go, finger foods, cake…

keep it simple.

I agree Stacey

My brothers getting married later this year, 300 people!!! are there!! He says he wants a huge party..Didn’t get a total cost, but I know its not cheap!!
At my wedding we had 15 people. We wanted something small with close family and friends so we went to Disney World and got married. it was only $4.500 FOR EVERYTHING I personally think big weddings are way overated, but hey whatever works. At least my oldest son will look very nice as a ring bearer

So don't

I’m not saying don’t get married. I’m saying don’t get bogged down by details that, I’m guessing, you couldn’t really care less about.

You’re the guy, just get a tux that fits and show up. She may ask you your opinion on stuff, but it’s simply her way of getting you to agree to how awesome her ideas are.

You have 3 jobs, my man:

1) On time
2) In a tux
3) Sober

and #3 isn’t always mandatory.

I told her that she could do whatever she wanted and that I’d speak up if I didn’t like. I pick out two things I think. Lights in the garage and the outdoor fan on th eback porch. That’s how the wedding worked too. Where do you want me to stand and what do you want me to wear?
