Orioles 13, Indians 4: O's offense ensures there is no save to be blown tonight

The Orioles whooped up on the Indians tonight, providing more than enough offense to support Jason Berken as he earned his 4th win on the season.

Jason Berken was pretty shaky tonight. He only walked three but he was off the strike zone most of the game. He battled through though, striking out 5 and giving up just 2 runs. The Indians have a good offense but against a great offense he would have gotten killed. His next start is against the Yankees on Wednesday so we'll see how that goes.

The offense tonight was on fire, getting to Fausto Carmona for 6 runs in 4.2 innings. The bullpen didn't fare much better as the Orioles knocked them around as well, getting 3 runs the 6th and 4 in the 7th. It was a group effort with only Brian Roberts and Melvin Mora going hitless in the game. Nick Markakis, who's been a bit slumpy of late, contributed 3 hits including a 3 run HR. Luke Scott scored 3 runs and was on base four times with 2 walks, a single, and a double. Felix Pie continued on his quest to win over the entire world with 3 more hits including a 372 foot home run to the fence at the back of the flag court. And Matt Wieters had his first career 4 RBI game with 3 hits.

The fun was dampened, though, in the bottom of the 7th when Felix Pie hit a gapper to right-center that would have been at least a double if Felix hadn't pulled up lame coming out of the batter's box. It was Felix's third hit but there wasn't much cause to celebrate as he had to leave the game. With Adam Jones still on the mend, Robert Andino took Pie's place in CF. He got to make a few plays out there and didn't make a fool of himself. In Dave Trembley's post game press conference he said that Pie told him it was a cramp and that he'll be ready to play tomorrow, but Dave didn't seem convinced. He hopes that AJ will be able to play tomorrow but if neither Adam nor Felix can go then they'll probably have to make a roster move. That sounds like bad news to me because I don't want either of them to go on the disabled list this close to September.

As I type this Amber is talking to Felix Pie who is still claiming he'll be ready to go tomorrow because his leg is just a little sore. He's wearing a Melvin Mora t-shirt and is the most adorable human alive.

Injuries non-withstanding, a great game for the O's. Game 3 of the 4 game set is tomorrow night as Chris Tillman goes against Jeremy Sowers.

Not sure about the Eutaw St HR

On further review, the ball may not have gotten there. However, that said, I still voted Felix for Birdland. I hope he’s okay.

So much Birdland,

I don’t know who to vote for. I’ll give it to Wieters.
But I just watched the video of Felix’s homer and he absolutely SMASHED that ball. Wow.
It’s nice to see the offense have an explosive night- hopefully they can keep the momentum going. And it’s also great to see Berken having better outings. 5 IP, 2ER is by no means terrible. It’s not fantastic, obviously, but it’s a start.

It's hard for people to hate Pie...

He is like a man child. Really energetic but raw. I hope he is ok.

Amber was looking money with the hair tonight

Pie super hot right now, hot pie.

"Chicks who dig home runs aren’t the ones who appeal to me," he said. "I think there’s sexiness in infield hits because they require technique. I’d rather impress the chicks with my technique than with my brute strength. Then, every now and then, just to show I can do that, too, I might flirt a little by hitting one out."

ok, i admit it

i gave up on pie too early. i thought he just wasn’t talented enough to overcome the fact that he’s on another planet sometimes out there. well, it turns out he IS that talented, although i’d prefer that he learn how to run the bases and not turn 2 or 3 fly balls per game into horror movies. so yeah, despite the fact that he was ungodly, horribly, almost historically bad for the first couple months of the season, it seems as though he’s more than worth having around.

now, i will say this – that doesn’t mean that the o’s were wrong to sit him for a while there. at some point talent doesn’t matter, these guys need to produce. and he simply wasn’t doing it. glad to see he’s turned it around. should we trade him if his OPS goes over .850 and somebody will give us a really good prospect? we still don’t have a true place for him on this team.

by "of late"

I mean the last few series. From the beginning of the White Sox series through Friday’s game he was 6-for-31. I didn’t say he was in a slump, I said slumpy.

Yikes, NOBODY voted for Hwigglingggton, now he'll probably jump off Key Bridge! Oh, wait, I get it...

‘Course, if he *doesn’t* jump he’ll have to play CF tonight, as Andino is reportedly getting wisdom teeth implants this afternoon and may not be smart enough to play by 7:05. Or something. I dunno, hey, I just work here.

In other news, the PAC 10 conference was rocked by news of Snodfart coach Jim Harbaugh’s insistence on relieving himself in PRIVATE, accepting the donation by some alum of a $50-70 K bathroom for his office. Those outraged by this extravagance should read the conference rules again, as they clearly specify that private schools are permitted to let their coaches take dumps outside the 10-stool minimum crapper designated by the NCAA for public institutions. Bobby Knight, of course, pee’d in his sink.

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/campusrivalry/post/2009/08/harbaughs-private-bathroom-has-critics-at-stanford/1

In other other news, people who wondered whether Z. Greinke has any awesomeness left in him may have gotten an answer of sorts on Chewsday when he fanned 15 Indians, which is the equivalent of 7.5 regular players or 22 NPL weenies (pretty much everybody except Pujols, basically).

Today should be a day game, since it’s Saturday and there’s no NFL conflict and, um, this is America. But Dirtbag Bud, acting decisively in his critical role of Pretend Commissioner, has decreed that no one in Moscow should be allowed to watch more than One Game Per Week, Dammit, so no soap. Kiss mine, Bud.

p.s. And in ACTUAL other news, how 'bout Kazmir to them Angles for...what now, 2 minor leaguers and "future considerations"?

Well, I guess that beats “past considerations.” Anyway, cripes, I wish WE could get a few Kazmirs for that kinda scratch. Actually, just the one Kazmir woulda been really cool. He always kills us (or does when I’m watching, anyway). Prolly still will, too.

Did not see the entire game

But I did catch Pie’s HR. And HOLY SHIT did he tattoo that one. When they kept showing the replay all I could think was that it looked like a Barry Bonds type HR. The swing and everything looked like that dude. Yeah yeah, I know BB is an asshole and did steroids, but he still had a great looking swing.

Could Pie actually be a power hitter? How crazy would that be?

yay felix pie

all of a sudden his season line is looking quite snappy. At the very least his recent run means he can now be in the “trade bait” category for this offseason. It would suck to see him rot on the bench all season next year. Maybe the O’s can trade him (or heck, even Reimold) for an infielder

OR a platoon in LF next year could potentially net the Orioles some of the best production out of that spot in the league. Nolan goes against lefties while Pie gets 75 or so percent of the ABs against righties. Their minor league splits (and splits this year) suggest such an arrangement would be pretty sweet.

I would be against trading Reimold

he has .270 and 30-35 homers written all over him in the future. Plus his eyes at the plate, looking like a veteran with some very impressive walks. Hope he can stay healthy. Heal that Achilles up during offseason. But my God, does he play HARD.

Hip hip PIe!

ew, it reaks of Yankee-ness. Never mind.

In other news, seeing Melvin fall back to earth was kinda deMoralizing. Oh well, even Adam Eaton had his day, I guess Mora was due one as well.

Matt Wieters can get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop in under one lick.

I would have prefered to vote for Juan Samuel

For NOT sending Matt Wieters rounding 3rd base. A huge collision at the plate could have injured Matt and changed the direction of this franchise for years to come. So thanks Juan for not sending him.
