Durham Bulls 11, Norfolk Tides 2
Starting pitcher Chris Lambert, who was claimed off waivers from the Tigers about a week ago, gave up 4 runs in just 3 innings tonight for the Tides. He was followed by career minor leaguer Andy Mitchell, who allowed 3 runs in two innings. Recently demoted Matt Albers is showing no reason to bring him back up as he allowed 4 runs (3 earned) in just 1.2 innings.
Rays prospect Matt Joyce, who came to the organization in the trade that sent Edwin Jackson to Detroit, had a big day with a single, a double, a HR and 5 RBI. The Tides scored both of their runs in the 8th inning on ground outs by Joey Gathright and Blake Davis.
Saturday's game is the battle of the Jakes as Jake Arrieta and Jake Peavy face off. Peavy is still rehabbing his injured ankle and Jake Arrieta will try to extend his run of good starts to 5. In his last 4 games Jake Arrieta has pitched to the following line: 26 IP, 20 H, 5 R, 6 BB, 21 K.
Bowie Baysox @ Reading Phillies
The Baysox were rained out and will play a double header tomorrow night. Ryohei Tanaka will pitch game 1 and Pedro Beato game 2. Since being promoted from Frederick, Beato has made 4 starts, going 0-2 with a 5.85 ERA.
Frederick Keys 7, Myrtle Beach Pelicans 2
In his 12th start as a Frederick Key, Rick Zagone pitched his finest game since being promoted. He went 7 innings and allowed just 2 runs on 7 hits. He didn't walk any and he struck out 10. He also struck out 10 on May 21st when he was still with Delmarva.
3B Tyler Henson, a 5th round draft pick in 2006, led the offense with a 3 run HR. C Caleb Joseph added a double and a run scored. SS Pedro Florimon and 2B Matthew Tucker each had two hits.
Delmarva Shorebirds @ Hagerstown Suns
This game was also postponed due to rain and will also have a double header tomorrow.
Aberdeen Ironbirds 5, Vermont Lake Monsters 4
Starting pitcher Nicholas Haughian, drafted in the 9th round in 2008, pitched 7 innings of shutout baseball. He allowed just 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 2. Haughian is having a great year so far for Aberdeen. He's pitched 74.2 innings over 12 starts and has given up just 61 hits and 20 walks while striking out 54.
He didn't get the win, though, as reliever Kevin Landry started off the 8th inning by giving up 4 runs against only 1 out. The Ironbirds came back to take the lead with a run in the top of the 9th. They won the game, but I think their opponents win the contest for better team name.
