Saturday Bird Droppings

O's rookie RHP Bergesen could be done for season - USATODAY.com
Orioles rookie pitcher Brad Bergesen has been slow to rebound from a shin injury and could be done for the season, Baltimore manager Dave Trembley acknowledged Friday.

PressBox: Young, Raw ... And Underworked
Press Box writer Phil Jackman thinks the Orioles plan to cut back on the innings of the rookies is ridiculous.

$1 Baltimore Orioles tickets on deck in September - Baltimore Business Journal:
For the 2nd consecutive year the O's are offering 500 $1 tickets per game in September and October. Guess that's what you do when you draw 13,000 on a Friday night in August.

Scott Kazmir traded from Rays to Angels | ajc.com
Tampa Bay receives left-hander Alex Torres and third baseman Matt Sweeney in the deal.

Mr. October Still Hot Over "The Bronx Is Burning"
It's interesting that on the same day ESPN announces it will no longer produce made-for-TV movies or miniseries, we also hear that Reggie Jackson is still mad as hell over his portrayal in "The Bronx is Burning."

PressBox: MASN-Time Warner Battle Continues In N.C.
The Federal Communications Commission is finally prepared to deliberate on an issue that has plagued North Carolina baseball fans for two years: the Baltimore-based Mid-Atlantic Sports Network. MASN, which carries the Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Nationals, is continuing to wage war with Time Warner Cable to get carried in North Carolina, including the Raleigh-Durham area. Time Warner contends the region is geared more to the Atlanta and Charlotte sports media markets, and less so toward Baltimore and Washington.

Phil Jackman is a moron

1. The 1960s were a pitcher’s decade, with the mound not being lowered until 1968.
2. The Dodgers in the 1960s were only outscored in 1968, when they were not a good team.
3. The Sandy Koufax he loves to cite had his arm ruined by overwork. He could’ve been even better if the Dodgers, like the rest of MLB, hadn’t been absolutely medieval in how they treated their pitchers.
4. Drysdale, his other favorite, was out of baseball at 32. Maybe the 270 innings he threw at 22 had something to do with it?

This was a lazy piece of hackwork barely even worthy of Bill Plaschke.

Not argueing Jackman's status

But the decline of pitchers is very curious. What about Jim Palmer and Nolan Ryan? Their careers were not ruined by overwork, they both had very long careers. Will we ever see someone pitch 20 complete games for the Orioles again?

I understand that the money warrants protection of the team’s investments. I just wonder if the current wisdom-that-be is preventing today’s pitchers from being all they can be.

True

but for every Jim Palmer and Nolan Ryan, don’t you wonder about the dozens of pitchers who couldn’t handle that workload and were quickly burned through and done with baseball because of ridiculous arm injuries early in their careers?

Heck, Sandy Koufax only pitched for eleven years and retired at the ripe old age of 31 because his arm was in constant, total pain for the last two seasons of his career.

Lotta people go through life doing things badly. Racing's important to men who do it well. When you're racing, it's life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting.

Palmer had arm issues early on

Palmer did have a long successful career pitching without limits. But he also had some serious arm issues when he was younger. He missed most of the 1967 season and all of the 1968 season. That’s not something I want to happen with our current group of young guys. Especially when I think we can make significant improvements over the next two seasons with them.

I opened this thread just to state that Press Box writer Phil Jackman is an idiot.

Also, if Bergesen is out all year

Means I made it to his debut and also to the game that ended his season. I swear, Bergesen has broken a trans-sports record for the ratio of length of injury and time it takes to get your injured butt off the field of play. He’s been gone for about five weeks now, and it took him like 3 seconds or less to get into that dugout.

Kazmir to the angels

Simply awesome… While I hate seeing the rays sorta throw in the towel, he’s a phn and mfy killer. His splits vs those 2 teams are offthe charts except for his w-l ratio (overrated IMO)

Time Warner sucks

actually, time warner can @$#%## my &&#%$#$. living in raleigh for the past 2 years, i have been illegally deprived of watching my o’s, and it’s all bullshit. time warner has already lost 2 appeals in legislation and still refuses to carry masn simply becuase they feel they’ll lose out on their own sports-net channels. trust me, this is criminal. so i’ve boycotted time warner, but unfortunately, my house has too many trees so i can’t get satellite, so now i’m stuck watching all games via espn gamecast or whatever. simply no way to watch a game. i hope time warner get’s itself seriously…corrected.

Sorry about the trees

I knew TWC was going to pull this stunt back in 2007, so I got DirecTV in the fall of 2006 and I haven’t had to miss a game or pay a cable bill.

it’d be much appreciated. Thats my future home and I’m not going til I get to watch O’s games without shelling out 200 bucks to extra innings.

by daveh873 on Aug 29, 2009 10:04 AM EDT reply actions

It wouldn't matter if you did pay $200

Since NC is “Orioles territory”, they black the Orioles out on Extra Innings (as well as the Nationals and Braves). I know it sounds dumb, but they don’t care if the channel they are on is available for our area or not. If your ZIP code is in the team’s TV market, it’s blacked out.

Just get DirecTV and be done with it. MASN comes in just fine with Orioles games down here.

I'm confused about Bergy

Now, I don’t know much about baseball injuries, and admittedly have only had softballs by my hs team hit sharply to me and not baseballs by major leaguers, but… I thought it was just a bruise on his leg? A bad bruise, yes, but there was no fracture… right? Correct me if I’m wrong. The USAToday story does not clarify. Basically I’m asking what is the holdup? Does it take months for that kind of bruise to heal?

didnt you read the article?

Phil Jackman- writing for Press Box (the ultimate authority in sports writing), would argue that bergesen is being held back b/c MacPhail/Trembley don’t want him to get overworked… his leg is probably fine, I saw him bike riding w/ Guthrie through the inner harbor last week.

Seriously though, Guthrie riding his little bmx trick bike in his affliction shirt, mesh shorts and ipod blasting (playing Nsync) is a sight to see, no one even notices him riding home after games

Earl:"I'm going back to the dugout to check my rule-book!" Umpire:"Earl, I have one right here." Earl:"That's no good, I don't read Braille."

This is a couple days old but I have to share, I'm sure many of y'all saw it already

From The Sun

Adam Jones stood in front of his locker Thursday, doing his best to keep his obvious frustrations from boiling over. But every time he took a bite of his granola bar, it felt like a small window into his mind-set. Did anyone here next Saturdays game has been moved to 4pm?

I was watching the Cubs-Mets game on Fox and they were promoting next weeks game and they had the Orioles and the Rangers game listed as one of the games they would show at 4pm.

Since the other games listed were Boston-Chicago and Giants-Brewers I’m guessing that the Orioles and Rangers will only be shown in the Baltimore and Dallas markets. This sucks for those of us outside those TV markets.
