I would be thrilled to see Strasburg in Orange and Black

However we already have a surplus of pitching.

Am I a bad person

because as soon as I read

Nobody liked Aubrey Huff either until he started hitting for us.

I dont like Harper either, but I would changed my mind the second we drafted him.

He also plays shortstop and 3rd base. Even if he stayed at catcher, he’d be at least a few years away and we could move Wieters out to first or DH to save his knees (assuming he’d sign an extension, if he’s going to skip town i want to wear out his knees as soon as possible.)

It was a competition between zk and SC

Because zk loved Danny Cabs and kept thinking that he’d get his act together, and SC hated him and knew he was worthless. They kept track on the sidebar every time Cabrera pitched. For awhile it looked like zk would be right when Cabrera strung together like 7 or so QS’s in a row, but well, you know what happened in the end.

But let’s be serious: the big three is going to be Tillman, Matusz, and Bergesen. How big that big three will actually be remains to be seen. Me? I’m optimistic.

…which is ironic, I know, considering what Tillman has done thus far and Matusz having not pitched for the big club.

Bergesen deserves to be considered among the big boys, though. He’s been really good all year.

Arrieta may not join the club until late next year. Or he could be a September call up in 2009. I was just showing faith in the guys who are here now who have either proven their value or have enough hype to make you think that they will do so.

Hey, I love the CLAW. He has pitched much better than anyone here had expected. I think he’s a fantastic 7th inning option. Please start grooming Mickolio to be our closer.

We now have 3 long men: Hendrickson, Bass, Waters
7th Inning: The CLAW
8th Inning: Johnson (hopefully he stops crapping the bed)
Closer: Mickolio

Honestly, what do we have to lose by having Mickolio close out games? We’re gonna lose a ton anyway. Atleast let him get some experience

fox sports power rankings

say that the red sox offense suddenly looks formidable again with the addition of vmart. when was it not formidable? and if that lineup is formidable, then what are the orioles?

then again they also say the giants new acquisitions “maybe might be enough”

by twistedlogic on Aug 4, 2009 9:08 AM EDT reply actions

VMart also doesnt actually make them any better, it just makes them deeper

He’s been struggling recently so his offense isnt actually as good as his numbers suggest. And since Varitek is still going to catch a lot of games, Martinez has to then either replace Youklis or Lowell in the lineup, two bats hes not much of an improvement on. So it gives Francona a lot more options and provides some valuable insurance in case someone has to miss time, but it doesnt actually significantly improve their offense in any single game.

by kba26 on Aug 4, 2009 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions

yea they mentioned deep too

but i dont see that it makes them “formidable” considering i thought they were pretty darn good before that. i mean, if the sox are only formidable now that they have v-mart, what are we?

same here

i’m still optimistic he’ll be ready for next year, but if hes not, it’s not the end of the world.

by twistedlogic on Aug 4, 2009 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, to me, everything is building towards 2011. It’s difficult, and therefore rare, for a team to have the level of turnover the O’s have had even since the start of this season and contend by the next season, barring that turnover being Yankee or Red Sox-esque.

I just feel like we’ll know exactly where the franchise stands by 2011. If they are contending, and I don’t even mean winning but at least making the playoffs, then we’ll rightly hail Andy McPhail as a genius. If not, then it’s may well be difficult to buy into his team building strategy going forward.

We’ll see. Like I’ve said, I’m optimistic. Frankly, I think it’s impossible not to be optimistic at this point, what with the superb young OF and the young arms (Tillman, Matusz, Bergesen, Hernandez, and later Arrieta). Do the O’s need corner infielders? Absolutely. But 2010 will allow for further development of Snyder and Josh Bell and/or pave the way for a key bat at either or both positions to be acquired.

I really feel the team is a lot closer to contending than their record (and logic) would lead us to believe. Then again, we’re a long way away from the 1997 ALCS.

Showing up=making someone else look bad/inadequate. It’s one thing to celebrate your own talent and quite another thing to denigrate someone else’s. I respect Mariano Rivera, and I respect his cut fastball, but if he said “YOU SUCK, YOU CAN’T HIT” to guys he struck out, I’d think he was a grade-A douchebag. Like certain other fist-pumping pitchers.

Harper is a douche. He may grow out of it since he’s 16, but right now, he’s a douce. Case closed.

Miguel Angel Sano

Without knowing anything other than there was an investigation of his age and that he is supposed to be an elite SS prospect, I want the O’s to get this guy. I like Izturis and Andino, but I don’t think anyone’s mistaking them for the best at their positions. Sure, Sano might not work out, but it would be something about which to have a great deal of optimism, much like the O’s outfield and the young arms.

My understanding is that he’s more inclined to sign with the Pirates because they’ve developed a better relationship during their time scouting him, but I don’t think it would be too difficult, even for the Orioles, to lure Sano to Baltimore if the freakin’ Pirates are his other option. McPhail has said that he will pay for bats, and although I question how committed he is to that strategy at times, I think this would be a good way to follow that strategy and get in on what should be a superb prospect on the ground floor (Sano is 16, isn’t he?).

Do you think Miguel Angel Sano is a player the Orioles should seriously pursue?

it's all about the money

he will sign for the most money. it has nothing to do with relationship, or what positions may open up in the future. it’s all about the money right now.

by brooklynlovesorioles on Aug 4, 2009 10:02 AM EDT up reply actions

I would think so too, in which case, money being equal, I suppose Sano would choose the Pirates over the O’s.

My concern is that the O’s will not offer an appropriate amount of money given Sano’s potential. Potential is a funny thing, though. If Sano lives up to it, the O’s are going to get a steal at any price, and if he falls short at all, it will be a black eye on McPhail. Not to me, you understand, because this is a team that I feel needs to take calculated risks like signing a player like Sano, but there will be plenty of folks who will decry the mistake of overpaying an unproven commodity.

by Brett Jones on Aug 4, 2009 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions

i wouldn't suppose that

when it comes to international signings, particularly in the DR, there is a ton of media manipulation. the Pirates brass is going to say things to Pirates beat reporters to make it look like they’ve developed a close relationship. unless those reporters are in the DR, they’re going to go with what their sources say. the espn guy who blog about this stuff is also speculating. teams will express interest but they will never tip off reporter as to how much they’re willing to spend. any reporter who says differently is probably full of it.

money is not likely to be equal becuase sano has an agent who is also talking to the media, to play teams off each other. in the DR there is also very little attachment to particular teams. they all make the same advances, give away the same team swag and play the same games. i doubt very much that he has any preference at all right now. one team will outbid another and that team will get him.

and don’t be surprised if the Yankees get invovled. they lost out on one prospect who failed his investigation, so hey have money to burn down there.

by brooklynlovesorioles on Aug 4, 2009 10:15 AM EDT up reply actions

It would worry me if the Yankees weren’t to get involved, to be honest. I mean, you tell me that there’s a bidding war between the Pirates and the O’s over a prospect, and I’ll tell you a prospect with very little hope for success.

Of course, if the Yankees get involved, you can count the Pirates and O’s right out. A potential lose-lose situation. Or maybe Cashman flubs on this one. Well, one can hope.

I feel like if you get in on the ground floor with a guy like Sano that you can prevent the complacency that led Tejada to become a mediocre fielder and a diminished threat at the plate. Or maybe they just need to give Sano the same PEDs Tejada was on in Oakland and in his first two years in Baltimore, I don’t know.

Because when he continues to grow scouts think he will grow out of SS. Also we should not consider our current needs when signing a 16 year old. The O’s should go after him, especially since it looks like our 2nd round pick wont sign (he is a SS as well).

So O'Malley is backing Light Rail for both the Red and Purple Lines

http://www.baltimoresun.com/features/commuting/bal-red-line0804,0,4455464.story

Anyone have any opinions? Anyone care? I’m sort of a transit nerd so this interests me. I’m not a big fan of the light rail as it currently operates (shares right of way with automobiles, has to stop at red lights, etc), and the idea of a single-track tunnel seems ridiculous. Like the current light rail, compromises might ruin the usefulness of the Red Line. I hope I’m wrong, though.

by PhilR8 on Aug 4, 2009 12:19 PM EDT reply actions

forget light rail

the purple line is a waste of money. funny you should mention transit nerd. i’ve always wondered about how metro (assuming it was competently managed) could improve service by expanding to certain areas and rerouting the blue line. unfortunately its poorly managed so that doesnt make a difference.

by twistedlogic on Aug 4, 2009 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I like the idea of the purple line

routing transit through city centers, with the central business district as the hub, seems a bit outdated. There was a website that outlined a different sort of transit system that used a spoked concentric ring-type system, like transit beltways. Most people are using the beltway to navigate between suburbs, right? You could replace a lot of auto traffic with transit riders with a plan like that.

So the Purple Line I like, in theory. I just think Light Rail is stupid and slow and only chosen because it looks nice.

by kba26 on Aug 4, 2009 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

they chose light rail cuz its less expensive than three-track rail and a hell of lot easier to implement

all the purple line really does is connect the three metro line termini and add some stops in the middle. i cant really say its going to get the traffic predicted

by twistedlogic on Aug 4, 2009 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure

But wouldn’t Bus Rapid Transit be even cheaper? That was the alternative – and yet (white) people attach a stigma to the word “bus” so that plan was doomed from the start.

I don't know if any number of train routes can have much of an impact here

I don’t have numbers in front of me as far as how many people are estimated to live close enough to take advantage of that Red Line route. Though being someone who majored in government, they can sure hire me to help figure it out. Hook a dude up with some insurance and I’ll do all that leg work for them.

Anyway, it just seems to me that the majority of beltway congestion is the result of people coming from, and going to, places that are never going to be connected by any transit lines. People going from Towson to Linthicum, Owings Mills to Columbia, everyone who’s going to flood this area when BRAC expands the Aberdeen Proving Grounds personnel, commuters who go from Hanover, PA to wherever it is they go… these aren’t problems solved by building some trains that don’t connect these places.

I can’t envision profitable mass transit routes connecting those places, either, because it’s really hard to get that critical mass when you’re going from one suburb to another. That would have to be heavily subsidized. If designed and run properly, it would be worth it. But suburb to suburb train routes are going to have a lot of environmental impact and probably personal impact as well – the dreaded eminent domain rears its ugly head.

On a theoretical level it’s a great idea but I can’t imagine the real-world implementation.

Cry havoc and unleash the Esskay hot dogs of war! - The Wayward Oriole, Opening Day 2008

by Eat More Esskay on Aug 4, 2009 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Personally,

some days I wake up and I’m radical enough to suggest that all of these places be connected by bike paths, but then some other days I wake up and realize that that’s not a realistic solution. It kills me though that I spend most of my time in Towson and it’s not connected to any sort of rail transit system. I mean, there were streetcars that ran straight down York Road not fifty years ago and now I gotta get in my car to go anywhere? I sure as hell can’t ride my bike if I want to stay alive.

I think you’re right that effective public transportation that satisfies the theoretical goals of the Purple Line isn’t possible without a paradigm shift in the field of transportation planning. But if that’s the case, why are we going to spend $2+ billion on compromised plans that don’t seem to have much real value? The Red Line will be nice for tourists (Red Sox fans) to get to Fells Point easier. I might even use it from time to time to get from Timonium to Canton and back, depending on how fast the trip takes. But is it work a billion dollars for what amounts to a half-assed plan with little public support? I wait for the day when technology allows us to realize some of these dreams economically and effectively. But this isn’t the time.

Can someone provide a quick paragraph about Matusz?

I have never watched highlights of him, and all I know is what I have read: great ERA, not an overpowering fastball, but he has 3 major league pitches. Any extra info would be very much appreciated!! :-)

This is from Reddrummer9187's post

Brian Matusz:
The #4 pick in the 2008 draft and it was him or Justin Smoak. Both looking great so far. He was and still is considered very polished for his age. An analyst at BA said that neither him or Tillman “will blow you away with their stuff”, but they know how to pitch and good things like that. Polish and control can be underrated and blow you away stuff can be overrated in my opinion. If he has four Major league level pitches and two of them are “plus” pitches, his stuff will be fine at the next level. You combine that with control and polish like it sounds like he could have, then he is a future ace. At this point he has dominated A+ and AA ball this year. He is my vote as the pitcher that will be the best. His 9.8 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9 are very promising to say the least.

Please don't say things that make my heart stop

Wiggy at 1B, Huff at DH. You know it’s bad for Luke when they don’t let him bat against the Tigers.

Can't blame Dave though

If you have to put Mora in…right now Wiggs and Huff are hitting better.

He's saving his mojo for september, I hope

because I just looked at the September schedule for the first time and it’s making me cry.

by PhilR8 on Aug 4, 2009 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions

why?

all those divisional games… thats when we make our run at 1st!

Matt Wieters can get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop in under one lick.

I couldn't decide

If I wanted to laugh at this comment or not. Although funny, its sad at the same time.

You guys are a bunch of pansies!

You’re worried just because in September the O’s play 5 games against the Yankees, 5 games against Boston, 7 games against the Rays, 3 games against Toronto, and 3 games against Texas? You’re completely overlooking those 3 games against Cleveland!

I heard a rumor that the Orioles are going to hire John Gibbons to be their strength and conditioning coach so he can whip those sissies into contenders by then anyway.

Settle down...

You are only saying that because Tillman hasn’t been a Cy Young in his first two outings. Tillman is going to be just fine and has good stuff. He showed flashes of brilliance last night but you have to recognize there is still a learning curve. He has never seen hitters this good before and he will have to make adjustments. Personally I am more excited about Matusz then I was about Tillman. His numbers are just sick… Lets hope for the best but at the same time realize that all hot prospects dont translate into hall of famers. I would hope that 2 of the 3 pan out for us to be solid starters for a couple years and something to build around. Cheers, Jonathan

It's easy to get discouraged in the face of the "long view"

and it’s also easy to get impatient and sell the future for high-priced veterans. The Orioles are committed to a 2011 timeframe. That’s what we’re looking at here – over a year away, and that might be optimistic. The hard work and failures of today will hopefully turn into the successes of tomorrow.

There is that chance

I dont think you are old enough to remember generation k so read on up

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation_K

For the record I am not old enough to remember generation k either but I’ve heard all about them and its a cautionary tale for getting too excited about pitching prospects. Anyone who wants to be a debbie downer about good pitching prospects brings them up.

However I think this is more of a worst case scenario than the likely scenario so give these pitching prospects time. They probably wont be generation k or Smoltz, Glavine and Maddux but somewhere in between that very large continuum.

there is no such thing as luck

pitching seems to confirm that. you either make the pitch or you dont. if somebody hits it, its not “unlucky.” the only “lucky” hit in baseball is the infield hit that just seems to die in the grass and nobody has a play on it.
