I dont know if its been posted yet but

We signed our 30th round pick Palomar’s Webb

http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2009/08/03/sports/collegesports/z3b399b7ab25ee43a88257608000b2110.txt

Here is what andy seiler said about him

30. Brenden Webb, OF, Palomar JC (CA), #896 overall, 6’3’’/190: If only they could sign him, I would love this pick. Webb was a name I kept hearing about in the California JUCO ranks as the draft neared, and I wondered if he might have enough helium to reach the top ten rounds. However, he fell as a JUCO freshman, and the Orioles picked him with their last second day pick. He’ll likely return to school, and he could be one of the top JUCO bats for the 2010 draft. DOB: 2/24/90. Commitment: None.

Apparently he was given like $250K

Which is huge for anyone past the 6th or 7th round.

Brian Matusz Day

I foolishly tuned in late, just in time to watch Matusz give up a ground rule double to Miguel Cabrera to have 2nd and 3rd with one out. Then, like a stud, he strikes out the next two batters.

I’ll wait for the next start or two to make it official, but if you all want to start calling Matusz The Truth™, I’ll not protest.

well there are several perfectly reasonable theories for where both team names are from, all of which are totally innocent.

-The name comes from the sound of whips used to drive cattle and oxen. Florida and Georgia cattlemen cracked whips to flush their stock out of the scrub while settlers used whips to spur on oxen that pulled their carts and wagons. Cracker has been used in this sense since the early 1800s. This is the most popular theory today. See Cracker Country

-The word also comes from the practice of “corncracking” or grinding dried corn for use as grits and meal, as in the lyrics of the folk song Blue Tailed Fly, “Jimmy crack corn.” When used in this sense, a Cracker is somebody who can’t afford any other food. And, by the 1800s, the name “Cracker” wasn’t used to describe only impoverished settlers.

-It may have been a shortened version of the name of a 19th century professional baseball team, the Atlanta Firecrackers.

-It could be a reference to a then-colloquial term for someone who is quick and smart, a variant on “Cracker Jack ballplayer”, for example.

but that doesnt make it any less funny today.

It's been in the news stories

But I’ll find them, just for you

“I think that’s the only way you’re going to win here,” said Huff. “I don’t think you’re going to go out and outspend Boston and New York, because the top free agents are always going to go there. That’s the way it’s been for my nine years in this division. If you’re going to win, you’ve got to build from within just like they did in Tampa. I’ve seen it done that way and it’s worked that way, and I think that’s the only chance you have to compete.”

“Trading for a Major League player right now isn’t going to help us win the division,” added Roberts. “Do we want to be to the point where we’re trading for Major League players to help us? Yeah, but I don’t think we’re there yet. When you look at it that way, you have to realize that you have to be realistic about the situation. You have to make decisions on what will realistically help you in the future and not necessarily today. I think we all know that.”

“We see the direction that we’re going and we see that it’s going to work with the caliber of pitching that we’ve brought in and with the way that they’re learning and growing during this transition year,” he said. “I think everybody here — veterans included — is able to see a good, clear direction set by Mr. MacPhail. And anytime you’re working towards a goal together, that fosters a lot of hard work and a lot of confidence that things are going in a positive direction. With some clubs, they don’t necessarily have a plan. They’re just kind of spinning their wheels and making trades when they have an opportunity to with no end purpose in mind. I don’t think that’s the case here.” (Guts)

In that situation, we’ve already got a guy that we feel can close in Jim Johnson," said Huff of the Sherrill trade. “And on a team that’s in last place in the American League East, do you really need a closer? It’s nice to have one, but you can win games with the guys you’ve got in your bullpen. Right now, you can go out and get something for him because he’s proven. If you can get some good prospects to help build the organization, then that’s great. It would be different if we were in the Wild Card chase and we lost our closer — but that’s not the case.”

Duck

Ill take the LBP tonight….. I “heard whispers”, then jinxed the perfect game… then put the icing on the cake by messing up the O-R-I-O-L-E chant at the end. Im tucking my tail between my legs. Im still ecstatic about the game though!!!

without tipping of the target.

Andino maybe?

He’s usually in on that stuff.

Just what we needed

Last few games were mighty frustrating.

by O! on Aug 4, 2009 10:01 PM EDT reply actions

should be 3-2 Rays

There was an absolute horseshit call that sent at least one run back on an errant throw. One of the Gabes was rounding third when the ball got caught in a ball bag in the TB bullpen. Rays didn’t end up scoring in the inning. Could be a game deciding garbage call.

too true

BBTN is garbage, web gems are cool but its awful. I am surprised this time since we had Matusz going, but they dont care about players that are going to be good they care about players that were good 3 years ago more
