MATUSZ. Rhymes with LATTICE.

Jarrod Washburn 'felt like a rookie' -- and got schooled by one -- in Tigers' loss to Orioles - MLive.com
My favorite headline from last night.

Looks like a winner: Matusz delivers in opening act -- baltimoresun.com
The Orioles' five wins in rookie debuts this season is a modern baseball record.

After batting cleanup last night for the first time in his entire baseball career, Adam Jones has now hit in every lineup spot. Meanwhile, with less than two weeks remaining until the August 17 deadline, the Orioles have made no progress in negotiations with their second-round draft pick, SS Mychal Givens.

Rick Elder - The Baseball Cube
Matusz was the number one draft pick in 2008. Ten years ago Pat Gillick, in his final year with the club, drafted 26th in the first round, after playoff appearances the prior two years. Poor Rick Elder never got a taste of the bigs, spending eight years in the minors, and never even cracking AA ball.

Josh Bell is 1 for 4 with a walk and two strikeouts for Bowie. And Steve Johnson started his first game and went only 4 innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits and a walk.  Meanwhile, George Sherrill struck out the side in his debut with the Dodgers and is sporting a 0.75 WHIP for them. I guess Andy really got fleeced.

This is your Open Thread.

Everything was just super.

"We did the job up and down the lineup tonight," Markakis said. "We got the big hits when we needed them and the pitching was just super."

Markakis rocks.

Markakis does rock.

And watching his monster HR from home plate before heading to 1B, just a little bit, was awesome too.

Something to ponder

When unpacking from my move I accidentally broke the arm off of my Ryan Zimmerman bobblehead. Now the real Ryan Zimmerman is missing games due to a sore shoulder. Is it possible that my bobblehead is also a voodoo doll?

He's fixed already

I superglued him back together, taped him up to dry, and told him he was on the DL for a few days but he’d be as good as new in no time.

I generally keep my orioles and non-orioles bobbleheads separated. Ryan currently resides with Tom Jefferson, Polish Sausage, Michael Scott, and Dwight Schrute.

I used to keep my Dwight Schrute booble-head in my car

Up on the dash, as it was. One time I had to flip a quick bitch, and Mr. Schrute decided to take a swan dive off the dash into the door (narrowly falling short of the open window). Needless to say, his neck snapped in half and his head went flying. Superglue works wonders though, as we had a successful surgery and he stands on my bedroom desktop now.

@baseball tonight

Anyone else ever notice that ESPN seems to slight the Os in every way possible? Like as far as I can recall the only time they ever do any positive news for the Os is regarding that Jeffrey Maier kid and how that robbed the Os. Someone mentioned this on Bmore sun as well so I figured I wasn’t the only one.

In other news, grats Brian and rest of the Os. Build on this please.

I'm not dinging you in particular

These laments are useless. Fans of every team but the two Yankees teams, the Cubs, Mets, and the current front runner team or two can make the exact same lament. Don’t watch ESPN and just ignore the issue. It isn’t going to change. First and foremost they are an “entertainment” channel. It’s the last place to expect any kind of balanced coverage.

I don’t have MLB Network. It’s part of a premium cable package and my family has recently simplified and cut our cable bills. So I wind up watching very little MLB coverage on the boob tube. I can read a book at night instead.

i saw a short clip on SC last nite and they barely even mentioned that we had a rookie that just MIGHT have won his first start surrounded by some great offense (two guys with 3 rbis) and several outstanding defensive plays. i dont even think they mentioned izturis or markakis. the o’s just set a record for rookie wins in debuts.

Lack of coverage

I’d have to agree. I waited until from 10pm til 10:27 to see the O’s highlight last night on baseball tonight. What did I get to watch? 1 pitch for Matusz, while getting to see a good 2-3 minutes of Washburn getting SHELLED. Atleast they showed Markakis’ BOMB and Izzy’s sweet glovework.
Also, I do remember them saying something to the effect of: “keep an eye on Matusz…He’s going to be a good one”

didnt even show izzys glove work. if they showed markakis going yard, i missed it. it was about 5 secs of “oh matusz won. thats cool” and 15 more seconds of “washburn makes HIS debut too, look how great he is. oh btw he got shelled.”

BBTN

It’s sad – I’ve lowered my expectations so much that I was just glad to see ANY O’s highlights. I was surprised that they didn’t give more attention to Matusz, esp. after the breathless blanket coverage ESPN provided for Wieters’ debut. At least on the early edition, Izzy’s dive and flip with the bases loaded was the no. 5 web gem.

I only saw two innings of Matusz

I was late getting out from work…

The two strikeouts in the 5th was the best. I was thinking he’d fall apart then. He’s clearly more polished than Tillman with the off speed stuff. And more confident with it. I was happy the kid THREW STRIKES. How many years have we watched prospects come up and have no control?

Anyone have the pitch counts for Tillman and Matusz this season? I have to figure they only have a few starts left in them this year before they are shut down.

by drj on Aug 5, 2009 8:28 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Not sure about pitch counts

Tillman threw 135.2 innings in 2008 and so far in 2009 he’s thrown 107.1 (minors + majors). Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the rule of thumb for developing pitchers is to have them throw about 30 more innings than the year. That’d give Tillman just under 60 innings until he reaches his max for the year, so I’d think that’d take him through almost the end of the season.

I don’t know what the cutoff for Matusz will be. He’s pitched 119 innings so far this year, but it’s his first year in pro ball. I’d think he’ll get shut down sooner.

I was particularly impressed with the back to back change ups he used to K Miguel Cabrera in the third inning (I think). That takes a lot of faith in the pitch to feed it up to that beast back to back.

Givens

What are Givens’s options? He is a HS senior. Has he been accepted by a college? My understanding is that if he fails to sign, and attends college, he cannot be drafted again until after his junior year. Is this right?

I was impressed with BM last night. I would like to see an extra 3-4 mph on the heater, but one can’t have everything. In his interviews, and in his pitching, BM seems smart, as does Wieters. Tillman less so.

Givens

He could go to OK state and re-enter the draft in 3 years (you are right its after your junior year) or he could go to JUCO and re-enter next year. He was projected as a 1st rounder going into the year and his draft status lowered a bit because he underperformed but he is still expecting 1st round money. Although if he is 21 at the time of the draft he can enter no matter what. I think he may actually be 21 after his sophomore year so thats when he could re-enter (which would give him more leverage now).

I know not everyone on here is a Ravens fan....

but this is hilarious.

Trevor Pryce plays co-ed indoor soccer in the off-season?

Every Monday and Friday, the 6-foot-5, 290-pound Pryce is outrunning an 18-year-old and dribbling around players half his size.

“As big as he is, you would think he would be a big lug and just kill people,” said Brandy Bloom, who plays soccer with Pryce. “But he is one of the lightest men on his feet that I’ve ever seen, especially for his size. You know when Fred Flintstone walks on his toes when he does his bowling; Trevor looks just like that.”

Whenever a guy who has received a $100 million contract (actually, four years and $48 million) is also receiving injections into a knee that, in the early days of camp, should be as good and rested as it’s ever going to be, it’s a legitimate cause for concern.

Back in college I remember a Redskins fan claiming that Terry Orr wolud start ahead of Mark Bavaro at TE if Bavaro played for Was.

Well, this turned the Giants fan he was arguing with batshit insane, starting with yammering about yards-per-catch & other such stats before devolving into, “waddaya, stupid?!?!”

At this point a Cowboys fan (voice of reason in this instance) sided with the ‘Skins fan with a simple, "he’s right, Bavaro wouldn’t start because that’s not the kind of offense they play".

This reminds me of Ranger fan talk around here for years. Something to the effect of “Brodeur is so overrated! The defense makes him look better than he is”. Either way I dont care. I’ll take all the stanely cups one way or another.

That and he’s brought me more joy than any of my other sports teams have in the past 12 years (I’m a Devils fan, but a MUCH bigger Giants fan)

And btw, i’m all for Flacco. My fave guy is def. Ray Rice though. I’m a bit biased.

sure, you can say they have more SB appearances

of course I could say the Giants have 2 more championships (including pre-super bowl era) and that they are 87-61-4 all time against the skins. I could also say that in the past 20 years the Giants have been to 3 SB’s compared to the skin’s 1. Depends on how you want to spin it.

redskins all the way

are you joking?

the giants were 10-1 when plax got shot last year. they finished the season losing 3 of their last five games, with eli throwing 3 TDs and 3 INTs in those games. you’re telling me that’s not shabby? and they got beat by the EAGLES of all teams, in the first round of the playoffs.

that the giants won a super bowl doesn’t change the fact that eli is a good, but not great, quarterback. he is one of the most inconsistent passers in the game. sure, he was able to step it up for a period of two or three weeks, but that doesn’t change his overall stats or performance. if it isn’t for a guy catching a pass on his helmet, we’re not even having this conversation.

mark brunell burned dallas twice in the space of ten minutes with two identical crazy-good over-the-shoulder passes to santana moss to construct one of the best road comebacks in redskins history. it doesn’t make him joe montana. it just means that sometimes the planets align.

You're talking like I'm saying Eli is a god

What I said is that the Giants are a very good team, be it because of or in spite of the fact that they have Eli. You say the Giants lost to the eagles of all teams while you defend the skins. These are both teams in your division that made the playoffs, while the skins missed the playoffs yet again.. I just dont see any legs for you to be standing on to be trashing a team and a quaterback that have proven to be superior to your team and quarterback in the recent past.

Nice work!

While it appears that we have tapped the majority of our good pitching prospects, I think there are a few things worth noting here:

Troy Patton no longer has major league stuff. Damn you FABRUM!

Jake Arrieta has had a rough time in AAA. This worries me more than slightly, as his numbers haven’t really been dominant since his Frederick days.

Pedro Beato finally in AA…can you say ‘filler’? What a shame!

Brandon Erbe + Healthy = Potential STUD

Zach Britton is still one of my favorite ‘sleepers’ on this list, though he is only a sleeper outside of CC.

by sickuvitall on Aug 5, 2009 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Arrieta

He’s had trouble in AAA, but I wouldn’t say he hasn’t been dominant since Frederick as his numbers in Bowie were better.

Frederick (2008): 2.87 ERA, 20 GS, 113 IP, 120 K, 51 BB, 1.159 WHIP, 6.4 H/9, 0.6 HR/9, 4.1 BB/9, 9.6 K/9, 2.35 K/BB
Bowie (2009): 2.59 ERA, 11 GS, 59 IP, 23 BB, 70 K, 1.153 WHIP, 6.9 H/9, 0.6 HR/9, 3.5 BB/9, 10.7 K/9, 3.04 K/BB
Norfolk (2009): 4.92 ERA, 11 GS, 56.2 IP, 20 BB, 53 K, 1.482 WHIP, 10.2 H/9, 1.1 HR/9, 3.2 BB/9, 2.65 K/BB

I guess the fact

that he got lapped by Matusz is what most troubles me. Also, I worry about the whole AAA stall-out thing. Many a great prospects hit their wall at that level.

I wasn’t aware that his Bowie numbers were so comparable to his Frederick days. Smaller sample size yes, but comparable. I guess the fact that I saw him pitch numerous times in Frederick and never in Bowie swayed my thoughts, I don’t know.

by sickuvitall on Aug 5, 2009 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not comparable - better

He was the least "polished" of the three

So i’m not at all surprised to see Matusz passing him. He also has the best stuff so if he learns how to pitch then he’ll be great. He’s more boom or bust than the other two.

"I have seen the future and his name is Matt Wieters." Keith Law

by Reddrummer9187 on Aug 5, 2009 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Matusz has more experience

He pitched for 3 years at one of the top NCAA schools at San Diego State. From Scout.com:

In three seasons at the University of San Diego, he went 26-8, including 12-2 with a 1.71 ERA, 22 walks and 141 strikeouts in 105 innings. In 317 innings total in college, he walked 98 and fanned 397.

Arrieta doesn’t have that background. 1 year at a JC, 2 years at Texas Christian. Brian was a more polished pitcher when we signed him. Jake is on, what I would argue, is a normal path to the majors.

"We're not the other teams' farm system." - Andy MacPhail

by duck on Aug 5, 2009 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Arrieta and Matusz are very different pitchers

Matusz is more of a command pitcher and Arrieta a power pitcher. Matusz had to master his command earlier in his career in order to succeed, whereas Arrieta has always been able to blow guys away with his 96 MPH fastball and now that he’s facing guys who can hit that has to adjust.

Odds are at least one of Matusz, Tillman, and Arrieta won’t work out. But it’s too early to be worrying about which one.

One play, two injuries at Bowie:

Stockstill said Bowie third baseman Josh Bell left last night’s game in the second inning with an ankle injury and is listed day-to-day.

“He has an ankle strain, but we don’t believe it is serious. A guy hit a line drive off of Tanaka that rolled to third, he came in to play the ball and landed awkwardly on the ankle.

“At the moment it’s not considered any big problem. But we’ll know more when he reports today.”

Draft stuff

http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/orioles/bal-sp.osnotes05aug05,0,7866891.story

Nothing new with Givens
Orioles director of amateur scouting Joe Jordan said he has made no progress in negotiations with second-round draft pick Mychal Givens (Tampa, Fla.) despite a face-to-face meeting this week with the high school shortstop’s agent.

“There’s just been no ground made up,” said Jordan, who met with Givens’ agent, Ken Felder, in Orlando. “It’s disappointing to me how this has played out. We did our due diligence and the rules change after the draft. We’re going to do what we can.”

In other news, the Orioles have agreed to terms with left-hander Jarrett Martin (18th round) and outfielder Brenden Webb (30th round). Right-handed pitcher Ryan Berry (ninth round) is due in Baltimore next week to take a physical and finalize a deal and the club is making progress toward signing pitchers Randy Henry (fourth round) and Ashur Tolliver (fifth round), Jordan said.

Outfielder Devin Harris, an eighth-round pick out of East Carolina University, has informed the club that he’ll remain in school and won’t sign. The Orioles have until Aug. 17 to sign their draft picks or lose their rights.

Martin and Webb have already been signed for above slot. Berry was considered a late first round pick before an injury plagued year but would take well above slot to sign (Arrieta 2.0?). Harris was another over-slot type player but wont sign and Henry and Tolliver are obviously towards the beginning of the draft.

In college we used to buy Vladimir vodka – it was like $5 for a handle and it came in this plastic bottle. Horrible horrible shit.

ha ha

I don’t remember the brand of vodka, but in college we had this huge plastic jug of it and according to the label it was made in Landsdowne, MD. It was probably the worst thing ever, but we loved that it was from Landsdowne.

When I was 22 years old, summer after college, I was living near Fells Point (in a not very good neighborhood, frankly), and after having been out drinking all night I woke up the next morning freaking out because I couldn’t find my keys. Turns out I left them in the door all night. I’m lucky I didn’t get robbed.

A friend of mine who was in his last year of law school at the time went down to mexico one weekend and stayed in this bordertown. We met these two girls that had been stripping at the club across the street at about 4:00am. They were staying in the room right next to us. So we’re hanging out in their room with some party favors that local law enforcement would have most likely frowned upon. There is a knock on the door and one of the girls looks out and its two cops. My buddy is freaking out b/c he’s about to finish law school adn I’m acting like a little bitch on hte inside. Anyway, one of the girls left her keys in the door of the motel room and they just wanted us to be aware of it.

I got a friend request from my dad the other day

And as annoying as it was, it seemed super rude not to accept his friend request. So I did, and I was his only friend. Next time I saw him he says to me, “How did you become my friend? I only made that profile to annoy your sister (she’s 14). I had no intention of ever using it.” I was like, “I don’t know dude, I got a friend request from you so I said yes.”

Facebook makes it way too hard to restrict certain people from viewing elemtents of your profile

I sat down a few months ago and created a few different categories that I can put new friends into – they basically boil down to:

  • Trusted people who can see everything
  • Semi-trusted people, like family members, who can see some stuff
  • Un-trusted people, like coworkers and the public at large, who can’t really see anything

And let me tell you, it was fucking ridiculous how hard it was to do this. I almost deleted my account entirely during the process, but wasn’t strong enough.

I have the two lists

Mine are called limited and BFFs. Unless you’re someone that I hang out with in real life on a regular basis, you get the limited. I don’t need people that I haven’t seen since high school looking at a million pictures of me or knowing all my business.
